When I was a young child in the early 70s I bought a Vera Lynn record. The sales clerk looked at me, tipped his head and said, "My dear child, you have impeccable taste!". That made me happy because in an era where The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were extremely popular, I thought that Vera Lynn was still the best singer of all time. That she was a beautiful innocent soul. She made me cry whether the song was happy or sad. Every single song she sang was heartfelt. Perfection! And I will love her to my very last breath.

Proof that a gifted, talented singer NEVER has to take a formal paid lesson in their life. My dear old WWII Australian fighter pilot friend who sadly passed away in 2003 ADORED her as did all the Australian & American troops based in the Pacific during WWII. My friend was an incredible musician in his own right but had to give it all up for the war effort. Which he happily did. The war over the Pacific was terrible - but Vera Lynn's voice kept those boys all going. I honestly don't think that she knew the impact she had on helping to win the war...she was DEARLY loved...the best singers in the world NEVER had formal singing lessons

Your comment is not only untrue but ridiculous...indicating a complete lack of understanding of the rigor of a musician's life. She was surrounded by accomplished musician as she progressed; band leaders required particular practice routines. BTW, even Mozart , Irving Berlin, and Frank Sinatra, etc., took lessons to protect their talent.

I could not help thinking how differently a previous generation faced a war than my generation. Vera Lynn personified the spirit of her times. Mine is the Woodstock generation. Vietnam was our war with body counts and napalm strikes coming to our living rooms nightly through the TV. There were protests and riots in the streets. The songs were hard, distorted and loud. Vera Lyn was elegant and graceful. She was one year older than my father. We have lost the poise of that generation, I'm afraid forever. It is well that we remember a time when we pulled together through adversity and sang together, one sunny day.

@@robnelsonnz This is the first time I’ve heard her singing this song I was a baby when the war broke out but I know this song my parents must’ve played them and they went into my brain because how else would I know them and to be able to hear them the other Internet is astounding that was a different time that was a different time a better time even with the war sadly this country does not have a unitySome may call it progress Aiko it going downhill and it saddens me that the younger generation doesn’t get to experience what we live through the 40s and 50s experiencedIt truly was a much better time Sunny

At just about 67 years of age, I have listened to Vera Lynn thanks to my aunts and uncles recordings, and of course the telly, but sadly I am wishing I had taken the time to listen more ...... and would have surely benefited spiritually and physically from it~!~ Because just watching this program has actually done that for me~!~ I have spent the past 10, 12 days gobbling up Vera Lynn's musical repertoire, and actually feeling a wonderful uplifting in my soul..... no exaggeration by any means~!~ GOD BLESS YOU VERA LYNN We will all meet again on that sunny day~!~

Listened to White Cliffs of Dover at age 7 or 8. Then my mother dug out two records by her. I loved those songs and played them all the time. I was really into ww2 as a kid. My dad was with the 101 in the Normandy Invasion. I was a music lover and really loved all the old songs from the war. Its all nostalgia now but, oh, the memories. She was great and this tribute was very fitting.

It was several years after seeing "Dr. Strangelove" that I found out who Vera Lynn was and what the song "We'll meet again" was all about. And when she was gone it was truly a light that went out all over the world. I am truly grateful that her songs have been preserved. And I have to mention that the critics who didn't like her are another example of now matter how perfect you are there will always be people who must be jealous or mentally afflicted somehow. RIP. - I am another American johnny come lately fan (must be millions, yeah?).

who's watching this in September 2020? I'm going to look for the 3 x films Vera starred in now. I recall her singing in the 1950s in my childhood. everyone sang her songs in London pubs. Vera always brings a tear to my eye even now in my 70s she sings with such a perfect voice, no one can match her even now. RIP Vera X ( so pleased that Paul McCartney was a Vera Lynn fan )

Thank you for this video. I'm American, and wasn't aware of Vera Lynn until her death. Been watching a lot of videos of her since then. What a remarkable lady. It's little wonder the British loved her. RIP Vera Lynn.

whale meat again - I learned to play this on my guitar - and it's quite touching, especially with the drawn-out phrasing suggesting lingering thoughts - and it wasn't written for WWII but was her usual ending song from her music hall days before ? now I see why that song was so significant - if played weekly over the BBC as the ending of 'Sincerely Yours, Vera Lynn' - no wonder it lives in those memories. No 1 album at 91yo ? Wow.

She was extremely beautiful, extremely talented and extremely deserving of her success and accolades. She will live forever in song and this excellently produced documentary is a tribute to her extraordinary vocal talent and shows what a wonderful woman she was. She knew a great song when she heard one. Her New Zealand protégé is an inspired choice as well. With enormous respect I salute you Dame Vera Lynn. God bless you.

In a fitting tribute, Dame Vera's coffin was thrown 'over the white cliffs of Dover, landing near the sewage output pipe. It was united with a huge flotilla of ocean bound turds and together they floated out, over the horizon to a chorus of 'we'll meet again', as the sun set forever on the British Empire. HURRAH!
