The closest word to that is obrigado, "brigado" for short. It means thank you, but I don't think that's the word you're talking about.

I am assuming that "to" is silent in both sentences and it can be placed in between 'asked' and 'him' in first sentence, similarly, it can be placed in between 'asked' and 'her' in second sentence. Because, silent 'to' is involved in english sentence given above, 'a' has been used in portuguese translation. I hope you might be remembering my previous comments that baffled you regarding the portuguese translation for 'to'.

Hi, Pranit. Yes, both are correct. I just want to add one observation here that I forgot to mention previously. There is a small difference between 'devia' (pretérito imperfeito do indicativo) and 'deveria' (futuro do pretérito do indicativo). The first means something that could have happened in the past, while the second has the same meaning, it also indicates that it could have happened after some other event that also happened in the past. I think you should know that because I noticed you pay attention to details, but in spoken Portuguese those two are used interchangeably. Now regarding 'a ele' and 'a ela'. What we have here is the use of the preposition 'a' because 'a ele/ela' are indirect objects. While in English you never 'ask to someone', in Portuguese when you hear the verb 'perguntar' the first question that follows is 'perguntar o quê?' or 'ask what?', that would be the direct object. Later, the question becomes 'perguntar a quem?' or 'ask whom?' and the answer is the indirect object. Sometimes the preposition is evident, and sometimes you're gonna see a sentence like 'Eu devia ter-lhe perguntado' where it is implicit in the oblique pronoun 'lhe' that translates to 'to/for him' or 'a/para ele'.

Alright. I'm explaining these two sentences thoroughly. First sentence 'I should have asked him' indicates that, in the past I didn't ask him but I was about to ask him, therefore the action is incomplete. Second sentence ' You should have asked her' indicates that, in the past, you didn't ask her but you were about to ask her, therefore the action is incomplete. According to you, when the object pronouns "me, you, him, her, us, them" are used, shown only with 'you' in the sentences shown below, how are they translated? • I should help you- Eu deveria te ajudar/Eu deveria você ajudar • I should help you- Eu deveria ajudá- te/ Eu deveria ajudá- você • I should help you- Eu deveria ajudar a te/ Eu deveria ajudar a você Google Translator shows that all three sentences are correct. Which one of these three is correct, according to you? This part is really one of the disgusting things I have ever come across while learning Portuguese. :( :( :( :(

Ah, I misunderstood your question. Let's try it again. Eu deveria te ajudar. -> 'Te' is a pronome oblíquo átono that normally comes before the main verb. This one is correct. Eu deveria você ajudar. -> If you decide to use 'você' the pronoun will appear after the verb: 'Eu deveria ajudar você'. Eu deveria ajudá-te. -> This is almost right, but the correct form would be 'Eu deveria ajudar-te'. Eu deveria ajudá-você. -> 'Você' is never used connected to a verb like oblique pronouns. The equivalente is 'te'. Eu deveria ajudar a te. Eu deveria ajudar a você. -> Ajudar is a 'verbo transitivo direto', this means that its complement does not require a preposition. The preposition 'a' would be used if you wanted to explain what task you'll help executing. For instance: 'Eu deveria ajudar você a estudar' ( I should help you study) or 'Ele deveria te ajudar a limpar o quarto' ( He should help you clean up the bedroom).
