Great fly George - have tied plenty of them since you first shared it on one of Peter's lockdown flytying shows. Has accounted for many trout on the Dodder and Slaney - not so much on the Liffey, where the highly educated trout have Phd's in fly evasion.

Wonderful fly George. I learned something in thread cutting the deer hair. Your videos are educational, entertaining and down to earth. Thanks so much and have a great 2025! Steve

While the sparkle dun is a great pattern that I have used for many years I have found the Klinkhammer to be even more effective for selective trout. Trout love to key in on emerging insects

@backcast4220 Caught some trout on the Klink but I'm still convinced the Sparkle Dun outshines them all.

I have been tying this fly since the mid-1980s. It's a simple fly, but it takes a bit of practice to get right. The big thing is the thread we have now; it makes tying the fly much more straightforward. I broke a lot of threads back in the day. Using the thread to cut the excess hair is a nice trick. I tie these with nature, beached, and dyed deer and elk hair. I even use CDC on small ones in the 20 to 26 hook size. It's quick, and it's also fairly cheap. I also used a stouter hook; the Mustad 3906 B works well.

Excellent demonstration, George . I've been using the comparadun style dressing since reading about them jn Mike Weavers book in the early 1990s. I like the idea of the thread cutting the hair, I've not seen that before 👍 one little add on which I like is to add two or three fibres of moose hair over the antron to suggest the tails protruding out of the shuck. Probably makes naff all difference, but tying your own is all about being able to produce flies that look right to your eye. All the best for the new season .

@springerspanielful I came up with something simple to improve trailing schucks that the Zelon on the back of the fly imitates. The shucks show segmentation when looking at them in the water. So I simply lay Mallard breast or Lemon Wood Duck over the Zlon. Cheers!?
