She never told her friends she was sick, and it seems to have really bothered some of them, but I think that was her ultimate act of friendship. Those last lunches and visits were all the better and more normal for their not knowing. I hope there is a Heaven, for what a place it must be.

While in college in Florida, 1978 I was very fortunate to see, hear and interview Nora Ephron for our college newspaper after an event she spoke and shared her life events with to a sold out event. The time I spent with her was magical and I didn't want it to stop. However, she had to leave to get to Orlando to fly back to New York.

Akeldama1570: Read/listen to Martin Short’s autobiography. She plays a very important role in the lives of him and his wife. The last few chapters are heartbreaking and beautiful, and it will make you fall madly in love with who she was as a person.

I feel the same way and I remember going to the movies to watch "Sleepless in Seattle and wishing with all my heart that I would meet the right person someday but you can't spend time worrying about it. One has to go on living and in my case trying to survive and get a job despite not working outside for the past 10 years. It is a challenge and surprised that I made it when it came to finding a job because I did it. Nothing is ever easy but thankful to God I didn't lose hope in the future.

Oh I miss having her on the planet. I miss the comments, the asides, the insights, the one-, two-, three-liners. I miss the dream that I'm sitting at her table eating her cooking, the dream of somehow knowing her well enough that I'm invited to that table. I lived in New York for 30 years and spent the first 10 as a cater waiter. I served a birthday dinner, I think for Peter Stone, in her apartment with 3 big round tables crammed into her dining room. The guests glittered so much brighter than I'd imagined mortals could shine. If they hadn't been having so much fun there could have gotten down to real business and solved problems like world peace or the number of hot dogs vs. the number of buns in a package. Such brilliance. But the joy from being together with friends was too great. Also Ms. Ephron's rewrite of "DEM BONES" as a birthday toast KILLED!

Thank you for this. After 8 or so months of sheltering in place and coping with the Corona Virus pandemic, I just had this intense longing to see Nora Ephron movies and embrace the love and joy of life she shared through "copy". I'm glad that she enjoyed her last meal and knew to a T what she was living for. What a warrior.

Nora Ephron is hands down my favorite writer, director, foodie--she was the whole enchilada (yes, the pun was intended). I've read all her books, I've hunted down her articles from past publications and read them, I've watched all the movies she directed or had anything to do with. I wish I'd been able to see Lucky Guy and all her other plays. I regret that I had not discovered her sooner. I have an inkling why just about everyone, with few exceptions, loved her dearly. I didn't share the same politics, background or lifestyle as she had but that doesn't matter. You can't help but love her. I'm sure she's in heaven giving God an earful regarding the manna being served, making suggestions for sides along with suggestions for wine--and making Him laugh.

I wish people would stop uttering the stupid sentiment "RIP." It's spectacularly trite and so straight out of a Looney Tune cartoon that it's meaningless. No one dies happily or peacefully. They just die, and usually pretty mad about it. And once they're dead they're not "resting," peacefully or otherwise. They're just dead. Better to say something kind about a person's legacy and what they meant to the world.
