So much of today's technology was inspired by what was seen on Star Trek and similar Sci-Fi shows. It just goes to prove that unless something clearly defies the laws of physics, if you can imagine, it could someday be a reality if the right people work with the idea.

@OrionSyndicate The thing with medical research is that the pharmaceutical companies are in business for profit. If you "treat" an illness with a lifetime of medication, you get rich from the repeat business. If you "cure" an illness you only have a one time sell. They have no incentive to cure most diseases because that would kill their profits, no matter how expensive a cure is. This is why I think that medical care and pharmaceuticals should be provided by the gov't and free for all citizens.

There is also a tablet computer shown in "Captain Future and the Seven Space Stones" from 1979, about two minutes after the start of the episode. It has roughly the shape of a modern tablet, with some additional controls at the bottom, and a cabled lightpen which already existed at that time in real, but only for big computers with CRT displays.

That's because of Moore's Law. Essentially it states that computer power will roughly double every 18 months. The thing is though, it can't continue to double indefinitely because the primary component of all tech, silicone, is unstable at the atomic level and so the tech can only be improved and shrunk to the point where that atomic instability begins to interfere with advancements or until tech developers find or develop a viable alternative to silicone.

shockingly similar form factor and you can even see a home button on the side. Star trek must sue apple immediately and ban their sale in the US. It's the Apple way.

The do that today, SuperComputers are built on this some have 1.5 million processors such as the IBM Sequoia and Cray Jaguar. Each computer is called a node. Those are dedicated used to model weather, or analyze DNA... There is also distributed computing such as the screen saver you see to analyze cancer. However a space station does not require that type of processing.

I dont know tech seems like it advances faster and faster as days go by, why 11 years ago no one imagined that a quad core processor could be fit in something as small as an Iphone, in fact, no one even heard of touch screen tech.
@TheAsianRepublican12 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the human body can't withstand the G forces, think roller coaster and fighter jet. So in addition to a warp drive you would need an inertia dampener. Which currently is more sci-fi than the warp drive.

@jones81381 Yeah totally, the whole flip phone fad in the 90s, and yeah the ipad, touch interfaces, surface etc. The people who "designed" these all watched startrek as kids!

Meh the whole idea behind touch screens and slate computers was borne out of ideas from the 1950's and 60's

The problem however with these types of SuperComputers is that they throw off a lot of heat and thus use a lot of electricity. Cooling solutions and heat management is an issue.

Warp Drives would be a thing thought in the past will eventually be a reality. One day in the near future if dystopia is averted, then we would have the power to conquer the entire galaxy or even many galaxies. If we have for ourselves the space colony project and succeeds, then I guess it alongside WD would definitely be the way to colonize star systems more than we can imagine.

Well if that happens why not put 1000 computers together to run a star ship or space station. Hell some one put together 50 SSD's to make their computer have more speed and memory.

@mrteemumilto ummm you're joking. There were lots of things i liked better about TOS than the rest of them but one of them is not intellectuality. TOS was about Shatner, his babes, and quoting Shakespeare. DS9 and the rest focused a lot more on politics and science.
