I lived in Stoke many years ago, and had a small oatcake place just around the corner that opened at the crack of dawn to catch the morning shift who worked at the pottery opposite. Loved stopping in there on the way home from a party for an early breakfast. Fresh oatcake, grated cheese and bacon. Fantastic. Google street view shows me the oatcake place, like the pottery are now long gone.

There is no good reason that oatcakes should taste so good but they are superb.

What the hell are those fillings at the end. Leave it to celebrity chefs to balls up the oatcake. Sausage and cheese for me, but NEVER sweet fillings.

as a welshy who used to buy staffy cakes in the supermarket and loved them, i have to say leeks (we do eat a lot here) would go wonders with them, and some isle of mull cheddar (wales ain't great for cheddar or bitter - it does good, but not great, though calon wen extra mature is nice, but not a good cooking cheddar) mmmmm it's midnight, awkward time in a quiet house to rattle the pots and pans.... rip cilla
