I like the idea of depicting Set as a straight up chimera. Because all the suggestions for the Set animal make good points. Depicting him as a dog ties him back to his son Anubis. Aardvarks and other African animals would play up his “foreigner” aspect since Egyptians rarely saw those. And even while I don’t think he looks like a donkey at all, suggesting that he’s a mule would make for good symbolism as a god of infertility. So Borzoi snout with aardvark ears and hoofed feet?

Honestly how Set evolved across the three millennia of ancient Egyptian religion is pretty fascinating. He started off as a relatively major protector deity in upper Egypt as a storm and chaos god, where he had a bit of a mischievous streak but wasn't overtly evil. (Basically a Loki-type figure.) When the Upper and Lower Kingdoms did their Dragon Ball Z fusion dance Set was combined with his Lower Kingdom counterpart, who was a lot more malevolent and warlike. Later, when the Cult of Horus was gaining popularity, the Osiris myth was made to explain the transition of power (Osiris -> Set -> Horus). Initially Set murdering Osiris was painted as a sort of necessary evil, and when Horus defeated Set fair and square he gave up the crown willingly and atoned himself by helping Horus rule. But as the Cult of Horus became even more popular they really started to double down on Set's negative aspects, to really drive home that Horus was the superior ruler. In addition various raids by outsiders and even an occupation by the Hyksos around this time (1600's BC) also caused Set's popularity to further plummet, as foreigners technically fell under his dominion. By the time of Egypt's golden age Set had become a highly demonized version of himself, and that's more or less where he was when Greek historian Plutarch recorded the Osiris myth in the 100's AD, the most commonly referenced version today. A lot of modern pop culture likes to use this later personification where he's basically just Satan 2.0, sometimes ramping up his vile nature even further. I would like to note that the evil version of Set was apparently more common in the major cities, as the more rural parts of the empire still clung to Set in his pre-demonization protector version. In my opinion, the back and forth of these city vs country politics is probably why the Osiris myth was such a big deal for so long. It's really easy to look at an ancient cultures and think they stayed the same for the duration of their existence, but just like Jon's Messed Up Fairytales shows us, things change over the course of time, sometimes drastically. Set is, in my opinion, one of the more interesting deities to come out of Ancient Egyptian Mythology, especially in regards to how his personification evolved.

Those three Egyptian gods in the Osiris myth were also color-coded! They’re also the “primordial colors” (black/white/red), the first three colors humans had words for, and learned to identify: Horus was the “white god” and represented the ultimate goodness and divinity of the pharaohs. White was also the color of the crown of Upper Egypt. Osiris was the “black god” and represented death/rebirth, fertility, and the colors of the rich Nile soil. Set was the “red god” and represented blood, as well as the chaotic colors of sandstone and the barrenness of the Egyptian desert. The crown of Lower Egypt was also supposedly red. The double-crown of white and red also represents the unification of all Egypt, thus uniting the concepts of both Horus (order) and Set (chaos). Pretty cool stuff

Also, the Cult of Horus who were popular in the last few centuries before ancient Egypt's collapse really did a job on demonizing him. Remember, the Cult of Horus replaced the Cult of Set as the top dogs around 1700-ish BC, and the early tellings of the Osiris myth had Horus beating Set fair and square, who surrendered the crown without much fuss and went on to become one of Horus's top subjects. But to say the Cult of Horus had a bone to pick is an understatement; by around 1500-ish BC the script had flipped to where Horus was the rightful heir, Set was an usurper, he murdered Osiris out of spite, he would cheat in the contendings with Horus, and it often ended with him being either banished or slain by his nephew. This is one of the worst character assassination cases until the Christians got their hands on Pluto/Hades and made him basically Satan.

Of course and so is Star Wars(unofficially). Anakin= Osiris/"Horus the elder"/MUFASA Vader= Set/Scar Luke= "Horus the child"/Simba Yoda and Kenobi= Thoth/Rafikki Lion King also takes inspiration from the story of Moses and Hamlet(the official inspiration). One could make a delicious argument that Moses either is Set, or his god is set. Anyway, long story short, it's all the same story retold. Herry Potter is the same as well, though it had more Greek and Roman influences.. in truth, all these "different yet similar account stories" can be found in the myths of every corner of the world. Ancient Egyptian Religion stretched for over 3000 years, and it went through a couple of reboots in that time. Set protecting Ra's boat from Apep is a holdover from an earlier version. Interestingly, during Egypt's golden era the big dog in the cities was Horus's Cult, while in the surrounding desert it was Set's Cult. To say these two sects butted heads would be an understatement, it's where the inspiration for the two god's contendings came from; the Osiris myth is essentially highly dramatized retelling of the Cult of Horus's rise to popularity.

For some reason, when you were describing Set, it reminded me of Discord from My Little Pony, who was the spirit of Chaos and Discord in the MLP universe. He was described as a draconequus who had the head of a dragon, and the body of a bunch of other animals. Maybe Set is kind of like that, not one singular creature, but a combination of creatures to represent chaos and destruction 🤷🏼♀️

I’ve always seen the set myth kinda how you described it here and I see him as more of a god of vengeance, every “evil” thing he did was reactive rather then proactive in response to being cheated out of what should be his by right, he was older then Osiris and was one of Ra’s right hand gods but Osiris got the throne so he kills him out of revenge, then through trickery Horus gets the throne after Osiris is gone and in every attempt to prove set’s right to rule he loses through more trickery, deception and cheating. So while what he did was bad it wasn’t like it was purely to cause chaos like most people think

Set is also the Egyptian version of typhon the dragon father of all monsters
@FoolishPrinceАй бұрын
And Typhon is described in different versions as either: 1.) Fathered by Cronus/Saturn, 2.) born from Tartarus, 3.) birthed only by Gaia. Personally, I see all 3 as correct. Because some versions have Cronus exiled to Tartarus after losing to Zues, and Tartarus is deep in within Gaia/Earth

I looked up online and I found that Set would take on the form of the Greek monster known as Typhon, so technically he'd have the head of a dog-like monster; so, I take to thinking that Egyptian gods and goddesses automatically choose the kind of creatures associated with their personalities, whims or skills, early in their godhood: take Sekhmet for example; she is a brave hunter and fierce and potentially a ferocious apex predator, so she chose to become like a rogue lioness without a Pride as opposing to the Cheetah Goddess Mafdet, who is clearly protecting all she cares about, like how fiercely a cheetah would guard her cubs, but ironically she seems a lot less feral compared to Bastet; I have no better way to describe either of the two most civil of the three feline goddesses.

Hey Jon, you should do a video on the electric universe theory of Saturn. It's not direct mythology, but it is very relevant to mythology. Just a suggestion. Look into it.

I have heard, that when Seth scattered the parts of Osiris all across Egypt, he threw his uhm... you know what into the Nile. Isis could locate it and his precious baby making part remained in the Nile, which is what made it so fertile.
