But remember, Luka's hype was nowhere NEAR Wemby's hype. There was zero chance Wemby wasn't going number 1, meanwhile Luka had 2 players taken ahead of him & was traded on draft night.
@brunofabiani12893 ай бұрын
Yea, while luka still had a lot of pressure is different form what wemby is going trought. Luka had less pressure to become an MVP caliber player, the worst thing he suffered was people doubting his skills. Wemby basically NEEDS to become an MVP caliber player on the next 3 years. Of course personally, i would never call anyone a bust for not becoming an MVP caliber player, we are setting that expectations on him he never said he would become the next lebron. But as we seen many times if wemby doesnt reach that insane level there will be lots of people sending hate towards him.
@corey22323 ай бұрын
@@brunofabiani1289 100% agree. At this point, you have people arguing Luka's not getting enough MVP recognition, but Wemby is EXPECTED to be an MVP player at some point. He's already in the conversation for DPOY as a rookie (very deserved imo), and people expect the Spurs to get back to their dominant ways during the Duncan/Parker/Ginobli era. Any failure to do so will somehow be put on Wemby, even if he's the only thing keeping that team competitive.

Doncic was the most clear #1 pick since Anthony Davis, and I don't know how anyone could have passed on him when he had easily the best resume we have ever seen someone come into the draft with in the one and done era. Surprise surprise, it turns out getting professional experience playing against and (more importantly) practicing with grown men since the age of 16 makes you gain experience like nothing else can (no matter how undoubtedly high the quality of the college KIDS is in the NCAA). Luka trained with the pro squad of arguably the best team in Europe since the age of 16. Playing with Super wise and intelligent players like Sergio Lull, Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez... making them look average. It was wild to watch. When he was 17 going on 18 in his last season I believe he carried the team to winning the Euro League. You add to that a mindboggling amount of talent, a certain amount of intelligence and love for the game and you have an 18-year-old who can instantly dominate the NBA. Wemby is insane though, hes not even European, he´s extraterrestrial. EDIT: this wasn't meant to sound criticial. I really enjoyed that video. Watching Wemby and Doncic highlights is just a joy. especially as a European. I really got Fed up with the NBA in the last few years. Watching the golden state warriors throw three-pointers really bored me. But in the last few weeks, YT has been force-feeding me NBA content and it has gotten me excited again.
@thaRealShady13 ай бұрын
That whole story about him being that good because he went pro so early is completely wrong. It is the other way around. He went pro so early and even dominated because he is a generational talent at the sport of basketball. US sports is way too focused on physical attributes and athleticism. No matter how early any other human being starts to practice basketball, no one will never be able to reach the skill level of Luka. Not to mention that he has all of the physical attributes and more than enough athleticism.

Luka moved to the NBA after winning everything in the most competitive league outside of US, he is a born winner and has a killer mentality that it's only seen in the all time greats. Wemby is a freak of nature, but he chose the easy way into the NBA, he went to a mediocre team where he could play as much as he wanted and the way he wanted without any kind of preassure and having plenty of room to maintain good stats... That showed to me a lack of competitiveness or will to win it all that seem off for a superstar. When Luka joined the Mavs they were trying to tank for some years but they had to change plans because how good Luka was already (admitted by the same Cuban), on the other hand Wemby managed to carry his team to the DEAD LAST spot in the western conference... how many superstars have been dead last in the league before even as a rookie? Don't get me wrong Wemby has potential to be a very good player, but being a leader and a born winner is something that simply you have or you have not, and for now he hasn't shown it to me.

@michaelahurt3 ай бұрын
I've spent a lot of time pondering why/how Ricky wasn't Jason Kidd 2.0 and I actually don't think it was the injuries. The fact he was a strong FT shooter has always been confounding because we think of it as an indicator of true shooting touch/ability ... But I think in his case it was a rote skill he learned -- similar to how guys like Bruce Bowen and PJ Tucker were able to shoot 40% on corner threes despite not being able to shoot in a general sense -- and it obscured the obvious: He couldn't shoot or finish. Also the fact he was small. Before the draft we all thought he was 6'5" and assumed he'd fill out to like 205. In reality he was actually closer to Trae Young's size. But ultimately he never had the kind of touch, especially around the basket, that's necessary to succeed at his size and I'm not sure we can just blame that on injuries.

the thing i have with the DPOTY it feels as though it should go to a team that actually made the playoffs. that would be like giving MVP to a player on a bad team so he had to score every time and got to put up 50 shots a night. the spurs make the play offs, and he is a shoe in for it. But that is some thing i dont think should go to a team that isnt in playoff

That mavs vs nuggets game was the first game I took my gf to. Jokic hit an actual game winner right after Luka’s “game winner.”

Is it the game that Luka also broke his fingers on the dunk? In his rookie year?

The thing was at the time of Luka drafting there were many hyped Euro players that did absolutely nothing in the nba. Even hear Dirk say they had doubts of will he be quick enough? If you look at previous years' drafts before Luka there are many names you have forgotten about because they quickly washed out of the league, but were supposed to be really exciting prospects at the time if you had a fellow tanking team so you followed the draft. It is obvious if you look back now his accolades were so above and beyond that obviously he would be star, but at the same time these other guys had accolades too, not as high, but it didn't mean anything and they couldn't make it in the nba, so it was still a high risk to see if he could do it. At the time, there were mock drafts that had him going even later than he did. The repeated errors of drafting Euro guys made everyone hesitant on if it would work, the Mavs were just the perfect franchise with Euro history and position to move up to take that risk. Even after Luka, there were some Euro players taken very high probably largely because of Luka performing way above expectations but they haven't panned out the same.
