The video game industry wanted to turn video games into fast food and never care about physical gaming and wanted to sell the next game in there menu. To this day the video game industry never call video games as "ART" as they rather wanted you to see them as disposable gaming.

Gaming has been tainted by the hand of late-stage capitalism as well. That has annoyed me with streaming services. There were some episodes of some shows considered lost, but then they're uploaded to Disney + or something, which is great! But then some day when Disney pulls the plug on it... They're all headed for the great trash can in the sky.

@@LaskyLabs Stuff like The Book of Pooh or Doug’s lost episodes are now found thanks to Disney+. We thankfully live in an era where preservationists are ensuring that we’ll never lose them again. Disney+ being gone will also cut off a lot of accessibility when you think about it. Tons of pre-1970’s movies, all of their direct-to-video movies, made-for-TV movies, tons of shows that no longer air and lots of classic shorts would now be spread across various DVDs and cable channels and movie purchases. Disney+ makes it easy to watch all 9 Star Wars films, or pre-MCU marvel shows, or the Disney Channel sitcom catalogue, or the Disney sequels. What will happen when its gone?

The Nintendo Switch’s “replacement” for virtual console is one of the clearest examples of dead ownership you can find today. Imagine spending money on a base subscription as well as an expansion pass just to play a 20 year old game that still can’t even be accessed without an internet connection.

Yesterday, I tried to download AC brotherhood to mod back in all of the dlc content because they are now gone from the steam versions. Turns out, you need to associate them with an ubisoft account and one account only. You lose the account, you lose the game. That's just layers of ownership issues there.

Sometimes console versions of games end up being better because of the crap like this they pull with the PC versions. Some people I know started getting more new games on consoles because the PC versions so often come with Denuvo. The console version can be played offline and the PC version can't (until someone cracks it). It's nuts.

This is why piracy is becoming more and more accepted by everyone. It not only preserves the game, something that these companies don't seem to care about, but it also offers better options than what a company usually offers. It's really sad when the best way to enjoy something is to pirate it. The same went for movies. If you buy the damned movie, you get rewarded with trailers you don't care about as well as warnings telling you not to pirate the thing in which you bought....No I can completely understand why people pirate stuff in that sense. Why should the paying costumer be the one that's punished, when you can skip all that by just pirating the damned thing?

Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Valve, any studio selling their games on a platform digitally, MUST change their websites and platforms to say "Lease game" since buying the game is no longer an actual legal option they are giving us. If we cant own the rights to play the game and do what we want with it within reason (IE, no trying to hack multiplayer games, trying to ACTUALLY steal intellectual property and use it in another work, etc.) then they should have no legal right to say we can buy it, they should be forced to say that we are leasing it.

Great video, it shows an ever growing problem in the gaming landscape, a lot of people don't realise how bad DRM is, the fact that you are dependent on an external service to be able to play your games is infuriating (even soloish games, looking at you Diablo IV). Back in the day (and not that far back tbh) developers had to finish the games before releasing them, and if they shipped with bugs the bugs stayed forever. I can see that having a day one patch might make for a better workflow on massive games, but it hinders game preservation since you either have to hack your console to dump a game or depend on pirated copies to play older games. As a consumer it sucks to try to improve things, services like steam or the xbox store are a commodity that have improved the gaming experience. I hope this video and your channel get more views people should talk more about this kind of things. Best of luck

With the Angry Birds example, I actually understand the Devs side of things. With the 3DS, you bought the game to play it on a 3DS specifically, they sell it, you buy it, and both sides can go their ways happily afterwards. Meanwhile, for you to continue to have access to Angry Birds the devs have to continuously keep making more devices compatible with it, the original APK from 2009 probably isn't even compatible with most devices nowadays, much like how a Switch can't play 3DS games. And if you're mad about that $1 you paid, you can probably dust off that old smartphone you bought the game from and play it there, much like how you can pick up a 3DS and play its games.

Hi, just wanted to point out a couple things. I should preface I'm not defending any of the BS that goes on with the ownership of modern games. Its just a couple of things I wanted to point out. Not EVERY new physical game released is just a license. Its mostly just games like Black Ops that are very online dependant that are just a liscence. Since they would he getting many patches and updates regardless if the full game was on a disc. Single player focused games like the Dead Space remake for example will usually come with a 1.0 version at the very least , that you can play offline. Xbox actually removed forced online DRM for a lot of games not too long ago! So that was pretty cool of them. Again, not saying this stuff isnt a problem. It very much is. Just the notion that ALL games are just a liscenese isnt necessarily true.

Console gaming history shows a shift in video game ownership. Early gaming consoles required physical ROM cartridges, providing tangible ownership. Downloadable content (DLC) concept introduced with Intellivision's play cable in 1981. Sega Channel and Nintendo's Satellaview further explored DLC but had limitations. Modern gaming trends lean towards digital purchases, subscriptions, and streaming, challenging ownership rights.

I do recommend checking out table top games since you can play games that aren't a video game or have been turned into a good one

I've been thinking about this, lately. It's really shady how ownership of something you buy is getting increasingly vague/complicated/jeopardized by trying to bend the rules around licenses. If there is still any way to purchase a physical game copy that has the full product or better yet obtain an open-source version, I would like to invest in that... The other problem is that I would have to also invest in newer consoles, which I can't do in my case. It's even worse if I want to own just a select few games that are only available on those consoles instead of giving the alternative to play them on PC. Steam has become my only way to play games since a while ago because of how affordable it is to play the ones that catch my interest... Some games that I bought on there are still being updated and are generally more developed than their console ports. Sometimes, it's not guaranteed that ports will receive all parity updates-developers may even decide to release version-exclusive updates, generally with an additional cost.

This prompted me to look at my apple purchase history to see if any of my old games were still available. I think there's some misunderstanding with some of this. For example, when angry birds was delisted, if you already bought the game and installed it, you still had it. Both times it was delisted you stilled owned the app file. You are mad about always online DRM which is always a pain. Angry birds and certain things you mentioned did not have Always online DRM. Like you were mad about Angry birds but not Virtual console (which had ALL of its games delisted).

This is something I love about Nintendo games. (We're not talking about Game Freak right now, please disregard the black sheep of the Nintendo family.) If you buy a Nintendo game, sure there might be a day 1 patch, but it's optional and usually just a bug fix because they caught a bug after the games were already being printed for sale. I've never bought a physical Nintendo game and had to download the entire game. It's there, on the cartridge. The initial release might have a bug or two, sure, but it's never "download the patch so the game is playable." (Again, not talking about Pokemon. Dear god we're not talking about Pokemon.) In a world where buying a 500 GB disc doesn't guarantee that the game is ON THE F***ING DISC, it's so refreshing that a company just... puts the game you bought on the cartridge you bought. And any online updates you CAN download are just to fix minor issues or for some DLC that, let's be honest, would have been a "scrapped content" fun fact for online listicles if it were released back on the N64/PS1/etc.

The videos only like a day or two old bro. . . - or - This is a very well known and heavily discussed topic with dozens of videos that have already been made, and I think generally most gamers already have an understanding of this whole situation. What I think is missing from this video (and most of the others as well) is any kind of analysis, discussion, dissection, guessing, etc., etc., about the situation as a whole besides 'this sucks' (it does suck tho lmao.) The situation just needs to be poked at from a few different angles. How did we get here? Why did wet get here? What do companies stand to gain from these tactics?(money, duh, but is it working? - check and compare stocks, try to find profit reports, etc.) Who Led and who followed? Is there anything at all that's good about this? Generally, it all leads back to late stage capitalism of course, but I think a lot of people would appreciate being guided through how so many have reached that conclusion. The gaming industry truly is one of the best and most clear cut examples of late stage capitalism out there. Plus, this video is only like a day or two old.

The games-are-licensed-not-sold clause is entirely misunderstood. It has always been that way and it is stated in everey single TOS ever, including from before Steam existed. It doesn't mean what you think it means. It means that you don't own the literal contents of the game, i.e. the copyright. Which is true. Games aren't products, they're software. A string of 1s and 0s which only do their magic once you execute the code on a local machine. This is why we have software licenses, so that there's something tangible to sell in the first place.

Frankly I find it very unlikely Steam is just going to kick the bucket any time soon. I'm no valve-drone but it'd require a terrorist attack to be abruptly pulled down. But if you're really paranoid about ownership, say "nah" to man-made law and just dump ROMs and/or lrn2piracy. It's easier to keep track of, you can transfer game files or saves to other devices, and if you lose a copy you can just grab your spare or re-download it. The physical components of all games (discs, cartridges, the console/machine itself, peripherals, display tech, etc) are susceptible to decay and disaster (sometimes it breaks down faster than we know it, even my 3DSes which are only a decade old show signs of atrophy), so you may as well take matters into your own hands instead of begging big corpo to be nice.

I learned something about the Virtual Console that Nintendo had. That showed me why digital games and the way they are being used ultimately doesn't help gamers as much. Because the time will come when you no longer have any access to them, so for any games that I wanted to play, unless I homebrewed my game systems and other alternatives, I won't be able to play them. I'm glad I retained some of my digital copies, but they only exist as long as I continue to take care of my game systems, which the number is still finite and require even learning real life skills to continue playing them. DRMs, Live services, I knew that they were a problem when some executives started putting this out and made a grand explanation that doesn't hide much when you realize the logic behind them. It's not any different than MMOs one day ending, and you never play them anymore. So, the point of where this went wrong starts from the guys' upstairs who wants gaming to be something that they can control from some point in the past. By people who barely have any respect for anything other than what could put money in their bank accounts. And the video game industry, like every other power and entity that exists, has people like this who talks a lot of talks, but internally has something in mind for the public. Even places like Google just hit us with a policy update with the inactivity periods. And I doubt even the inactivity period of 2 years will last, as they keep changing their minds and make things even more unbearable for their consumers. And they know they can push the limits since not enough people makes a fuss enough to care. I know from just reviewing my life that back then, at least you owned your copy of a game and play it so long as you had taken care of your game systems. Which lasted as long as it did up until the 2007 to 2020s where everything is being moved to digital. This is more than just gaming; this is something else that's been slowly but surely heading straight to a future where we have little ownership of anything that's digital and maybe more. This usually gets written off as some conspiracy, but I don't have to be a theorist to know that our future is becoming bleak by the hands of corrupt people who really got some serious issues with controlling people, which is pretty sad and pitiful. They say, "save your pity for the weak", but I realized one thing from that phrase. It's all BS from people too lost in trying to be number 1 at too many expenses to everyone else. They can keep their sad strong vs weak philosophies.

Good video, good editing, I agree with your point, but if I had to be honest it feels a little like you're just making the same argument (owning game = good, renting/licencing game = bad).

I don't think TF2 is the same as those other games in the Live Service section. You can host your own dedicated server and play with people, should even work offline if you wanted to do it at a LAN party. During the portion where you talk about Switch games being playable day 1 but getting more content later that's not on the cart, I think you should've mentioned that they actually reprint carts later with newer versions of the game on them. Usually this still doesn't include DLC (though Japan gets some cartridges with DLC on them I think), but it will at least include the game updates. It's also worth discussing the flaws of physical games for preservation. Your disc/cartridge can be damaged, lost, broken, etc. We really need a combination of physical and digital, and no DRM getting in our way. You should be able to get a cartridge and then back it up to your computer, we should be able to find backups of cartridges online that can then be played back even if all the cartridges in the world have stopped working. Physical games with the whole game still have the advantage that you can use them even if you have no Internet access at all, but for the most part getting digital backups of stuff from the Internet covers things. You kind of addressed this at the end with "just fucking pirate it". That's the only method that will last and be reliable. Although it's not perfect because someone has to actually preserve the games in a place others can get them, otherwise we end up with lost media. Also anything that relies on a central server becomes unplayable unless/until people reverse engineer it enough to recreate the server. It's sad that it often feels like the players of the games are in a war against the people making the games. We want to play games, they want us to play their games. It should be that simple.

Discs are more than licenses for the most part. It's not a matter of storage. Games just run faster off your storaage than it would via disc

No, what Nintendo's doing with their subscription VC service is perfect, because I don't want to keep paying Nintendo $8-$10 freaking dollars for the same game on Nintendo's next console. The way Nintendo's subscription works is perfect, as all those games on the service NOW will still work on all of Nintendo's future consoles without having to re-port all of those games and emulators again. They'll all just work, so what Nintendo is doing with their classic retro games is making them future proof. I vastly prefer Nintendo's method than the old VC method where you have to keep buying the same game again and again, and that's IF Nintendo decides to port that same game to their next console. I don't foresee Nintendo going anywhere from the gaming industry. I can easily see Microsoft and Sony leaving the gaming industry because they've made such a huge mess out of it.

If you add up the money you are spending each month, you might as well just buy them all again, AND you don't own them. Furthermore, you don't have to buy them on a new console. You can use your old one.

@@brighamfish713this is what i’m talking about! who cares if NSO gives us NES, SNES and N64 you are LATE if you want to buy those on switch they’ve been offering those consoles SINCE 2006 ON THE WII!!! if Nintendo wants to justify NSO they can’t justify their subscription with titles we’ve already been playing since childhood emulation. They need to stop holding GCN titles for remakes and just release them under the service, if Xbox has Game Pass down, Nintendo could. it’s as simple as copying and pasting ISOs into an emulator app

Personally, I disagree with what you said about Live Service games. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but you still paid money to have fun with the game. Your money didn't "go to nothing" when the server shut down, you probably paid for years worth of fun. Admittedly, it's probably a worse ratio than paying 60 or 70 dollars per triple A title, but it also depends on the average player and how willing they are to replay the titles they own.
