Unlockables were something special back in the day, specially from the start of the 3D era up until 2010. Then the DLC era attacked and nothing has been the same. Unlockables are the reason Brawl is my favorite Smash game, because there is single player content and it's actually fun. What a concept!

I miss unlocking stuff in games. I can understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea but I think they shouldn't have removed it. They could have just gone the way they did things in Mario Sports Mix and give the player the option to either unlock everery thing with hard work and game dedication or just get everything with a code. Some indie games like Ultimate Chicken Horse still do it today and I think it's the best way around it.

Yeah I've been kinda disappointed about the lack of good unlockables in recent Mario games. I totally get why it might seem like a chore, though. Smash Ultimate, for example, took it a little too far (only 8 to start with plus DLC? kinda harsh given the sheer number of characters).

Ngl, I feel like Brawl and 4 had better unlockables than Ultimate. Not only were the requirements to unlocking characters were stronger than just "have some fights or do world of light", but we also had unlockable stages, unlocking trophies which felt more satisfying than unlocking spirits, masterpieces, and so much more. Honestly, while the core gameplay of Smash Ultimate is the best the series has, in terms of extra content, it's quite dissapointing.

This is why Mario Kart Double Dash is my favourite game in the series: the unlockables. My favorite thing they did with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is make it so that getting a rank on a higher difficulty automatically gave you that rank on all difficulties below it as well. One of the most annoying thing of older Mario Kart games was being forced to go through the slog that is 50cc in order to unlock things. I'm very happy that was changed, though it makes it matter slightly less now that they removed stars next to your name in online multiplayer.

Super Mario Bros Wonder seems like it'll have the largest playable roster in a mainline Mario platformer, though none of them seem to be unlockable. We did hear from the director that part of the reason is to prevent players fighting over who gets to play a particular character. (More specifically his daughters would fight over who gets to play as Peach, so he added Daisy so they could both play as different princesses, in the process making Daisy's first appearance since her debut that isn't a spinoff or Super Mario Run.) We do however get unlockable badges, some of which seem to be from completing small challenges, and others purchased with in-game currency, which change up parts of the gameplay.

I think online play is what killed these games. Before hand Nintendo had to think about the value of the game and what would keep people playing as a way tk justify the price, playing against other people is obviously a reason but back in the day that wasn’t a guarantee so stuff like unlockables and mini games were a good way of adding content to a game to increase its replayability. But with online play on the rise with the Wii, wiiU, and definitely the switch, Nintendo probably feels there’s no need to add replay value to a game because the multiplayer aspect of the game is what will keep it going and online ensures you’ll always have someone to play with, so they just slam some DLC on it for a quick buck and keep the game on life support a little longer and they call it a day. Truly a shame I think people loved the earlier games because of the unlockables and single player aspect of it. I loved a lot of these games growing up and I never had anyone to play them with.

@Unchainedful
@Unchainedful Жыл бұрын
The problem with unlockables not just in Mario games is due to esports. All players must have equal opportunity and ability to play as any and all playable characters. This is even a thing with Smash Ultimate since Nintendo actually offers to unlock all characters for you upon support request(requires your esport sponsor). This is why now in fighting especially, there are no unlockable characters, maybe just one which is really easy to unlock. All esport competitive players must be given the chance to play as and train as all characters so one person doesn’t have an advantage over another. You will never have a character that’s very hard to unlock because of this, it causes an unfair advantage.

Great video! I also share the same sentiment, I LOVED unlocking things in every Mario game from the GameCube and Wii era, especially MKDD, MKWii, Smash Melee and Smash Brawl. The latter two I'll never forget the memories of unlocking the characters, I think I even have a recording of me unlocking King Boo and Petey Piranha in MKDD, it truly felt like an achievement back in the day. Also, I never unlocked Petey Piranha in Strikers Charged despite trying hard, I just couldn't beat that last cup, it was INSANELY hard! I'd just like to make some quick corrections btw: 1) Daisy and Waluigi weren't unlockable in Mario Party 3, they already came with the base roster. They WERE planned to be unlocked, as seen in pre-release media, but they backed out in the final game. 2) There IS an unlockable board in Super Mario Party, being Kamek's Tantalizing Tower (but it's so underwhelming I can forgive you for forgetting you had to unlock it). 3) Mario Tennis 64 does have unlockable characters besides the transfer pak ones, being Donkey Kong Jr. and Shy Guy. 4) The adventure mode for Tennis Aces was available at launch, it wasn't an update. Maybe what you got mixed up was the fact they added that intro cinematic for it in an update.

This is something they really seem to understand in the indie roguelike sphere. In a genre where you're meant to play a game multiple times, it helps to have an overarching goal to work towards beyond simply winning. If winning is the only goal, then the game ends after you win. Games like Monster Train and Streets of Rogue have phenomenal unlocking systems that are tailored to the roguelike formula. By tying the unlocks to an achievement system or points gained in a run, it lets you feel a sense of progress even after a loss. Both also have victory-based achievements as well that still keep the sense of accomplishment from victory meaningful. Streets of Rogue in particular unlocks overpowered versions of each character class you win the game with, which is a nice flavorful reward for demonstrating mastery with that class. And then of course most roguelikes employ the Ascension system popularized by Slay the Spire, which lets you play at a slightly higher difficulty each time you beat the previous tier, which carries both a sense of steady accomplishment and also lets you refine the difficulty level to just where you want it to be. It can also be useful to gate variety behind skill-based unlockables to tailor the early player experience to be more beginner-friendly and dripfeed the more complex aspects as the player proves they have the skill to warrant them. That's what they did with the mobile card game Marvel Snap, which uses unlockables to create one of the best on-boarding experience I've had in recent memory. Instead of drafting a hundred cards from the start and weeding through the fodder to find the best ones, each individual card is meant to have viability and compete for a deck slot, like when you get a new character to potentially add to your team in Mario Baseball. Maybe this new guy's got synergy with this other guy, but those two would work better with this third guy that's been on the bench this whole time. Or maybe I can just build a new team around this new guy's ability. Games like these make me think unlockables as a game mechanic still has potential to do things that developers haven't come up with yet.

Smash Ultimate was when I realized how things had changed. The mystery of unlockables is just kind of not a thing anymore, the internet just kinda makes that impossible now (At least when it comes to unlocking characters or stages). I completely do understand why they revealed all the characters before the games release. This way we at least get to enjoy some of that mystery and revelation, just not inside the actual game. Regarding Mario Kart 8 I wouldn't be surprised if the absence of these kinds of unlockables even increased sales. Just a shame things had to change like that.

In my opinion, I think that Kirby Star Allies took the best approach to having post-launch update content: have the characters already downloaded into the game, but not have them playable until you reach certain levels where they're most relevant to the plot. That way, new players will still have extra stuff to look forward to, and people who beat the game beforehand get the characters from the get-go because they've already fulfilled the conditions, and they can enjoy the new routes in Guest Star Mode. If Mario spinoffs want to go down the update route, I'd say this is the best way to do it going forward

This was a video we needed. Unlocking stuff is really fun and I'm glad how you called out the absolute lame-ness of the modern free update system. It's worth mentioning that when a new Mario Baseball game was rumored for the switch, there were soooo many people apathetic to the idea of it because everyone was expecting it to be another shallow release with "new content" only being dropped in free updates. That's how hard Nintendo has dropped the ball with the sports titles on Switch.

Why should i commit my time to something when you can just buy it or have it automatically unlocked? Kills some of the fun of chipping away at a goal til you achieve it. Like if super mario sunshine came out now, the sunglasses and shirt set wouldn't be an unlockable from time and effort, it'd just be unlocked automatically or included in some random dlc package. progress is fun and the feeling of achieving something is amazing. Great video, I agree with mostly everything you said. Similarly, I'd absolutely love Nintendo finally adding achievements to all of their games. It would actually make you wanna play a game even AFTER finishing the main story mode. I don't really count those NSO missions as achievements as they are.. pretty lackluster - not comparable to Steam or Sony achievements at all (saying this as someone who doesn't even have a PS himself). However, I gotta defend Mario Tennis Aces. First of all, I think it definitely is the most finished and polished one of the main three Mario sports games on the Switch, but much more importantly: At (16:06) you put "no adventure mode on launch". Which isn't the case, as it had the full Story Mode given at the very first day it released. The only thing added somewhen after was the new bonus Postgame DLC island FOR said Adventure Mode. Still, fantastic topic and I really enjoyed that video! Keep it up :)

It's interesting to see where the priorities of every development studio lie when they're forced by Nintendo to release them early. Next Level games prioritizes character animation, because that's the only cool thing Battle League has, really fleshed out stuff. Camelot on the other hand removed all the unique animations there were in Mario Golf 3DS and narrowed it down to two win animations per character, but introduced some weird gimmicky mode. And both lack interesting courses/fields.

Honestly as 30yo adualt, I don’t miss unlocking stuff anymore and actually glad most games comes with nearly all character and stages at jump and I don’t think most of newer kids like unlocking stuff either. Like I straight up groaned when I to unlock my mains for Ultimate cause I just wanted to go online and play with my friends. Like most of people who missed unlocking stuff are people who grew up with it and honestly I can still play through a game and enjoy it even without unlockables. And lets be real some unlockables were straight up BS like unlocking Mewtwo in Melee, god that was horrendous!

This was a good video to see the big picture of modern Nintendo, just a shame to see how much energy has been sucked out of the spinoffs, As for unlocking stuff, I feel like it would be even cooler if nintendo didn’t announce every single itty bitty detail before, Being surprised and wowed by a game when you see something new makes it feel more like an adventure. Thats also another reason why Ive disliked modern pokemon also, they hype up a big mystery pokemon and they end up just showing it off on twitter anyways, what a letdown.

i was very happy learning in smash ultimate you had to unlock every character other than the original 8, i was much more disappointed at the fact the only way to make unlocking the characters fun, was to play world of light, in comparison to previous games where every character had an interesting unlock method

For me, what matters more than there being unlockables is what you need to do to unlock them in the first place. In a very real sense, unlockables serve the same purpose as achievements do to incentivize gameplay, when they aren't also involved with progression. I actually don't like how Smash Ultimate handled it, because they all get handed to you with time. You want to have a "cheat" way to do it? Fine, whatever, make it X Versus Matches, that would need to be intentionally sought after, and is useful for setting up tournaments or whatever. But where's my "beat the game without losing a stock"? Or "complete all Target Tests with a low total"? Or even "recruit them in Adventure"? The unlock has to _mean_ something, is what I'm getting at, otherwise it's just mindless grinding instead of a reward. But then again, Nintendo seems to be utterly dismissive of achievements as "purely extrinsic", so it makes sense why they don't understand what makes unlockables a good concept.

That moment when i can be thankful (so far) that my favorite of the Mario Sports games, died on the Wii, Mario Baseball! Granted I think sluggers campaign mode was still a downgrade to the superstar campaign as you actually played more baseball in the original compared to just the minigames, but there were far more unlockables in Sluggers.

I know you said you won’t be mentioning certain sport games but did you ever play “Mario sports mix” because that game is awesome. I loved this game growing up so much and for me it was up there with Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
