My father & I took my Vietnam War veteran grandfather to Washington D.C. several years ago for the 1st time for him to see The Vietnam War Memorial Wall. He was drafted in the late 1960s & he got injured by shrapnel from a land mine (in addition to getting shot), so he got sent home & received a Purple Heart. However, 6 of his buddies didn't make it back home, so before the trip he made a list of all of their names & where they were located on The Wall. As he found each on the wall, he got very emotional knowing that he managed to come home (though injured), get married, have 3 sons, & live another 50 years, but 6 of his friends didn't.

I've been to Vietnam 5 times. On the first 3 trips, Saigon was full of American Vietnam vets living in an alcoholic dream world and remembering the happiest time of their life, when they were handsome and young and their $5 Vietnamese whore really seemed to love them (and often did). I could see that their eyes were seeing another time as they drank their Coke and Vietnamese rum. I started drinking it myself.

One weakness of the video is that it makes it look like the South Vietnamese leader--the one who's always talking to the USA ball--was the same guy all the time. It wasn't. There was a new South Vietnamese head of state every year or two throughout the Sixties, each propped up by the US and each more incompetent and corrupt than the last, merely sucking up to the USA for the sake of power and money. None of them could have run an effective government even in peacetime, let alone have won a war. Much less, a war that was stupidly and incompetently conducted by the USA to begin with. (The war, as conceived and executed by the US, was unwinnable: You can't bomb and kill people into liking you.) The role of the US media, however, is pretty accurately portrayed here. For the first few years of the war, the media faithfully reported exactly what the US government (i.,e., the Pentagon) told them to report, that the war was going swell and would all be over soon. When that outcome hadn't materialized within five years of the great escalation of 1965, the US media finally began to do some belated digging and discovered, to their amazement, that the US government had been lying to them. The US wasn't winning; it wasn't coming close to winning. So then they--accurately--reported that fact. It seems funny and quaint now, but in the 1960s Americans across the board were genuinely shocked to find that their own government might lie to them!

27:25 From what I know, the media did kinda got too much in the way, but the government and CIA also messed up too much on the way how they handled it. However, if the US wasn't so afraid of getting in a war with China and came up with economic policies to keep China from entering the war like in Korea and just go straight to the north and invade and take over, then the US would've successfully ended the war even before all the protests started.
