The policy of keeping families together is WHY there are 320,000 missing kids. There's a legal precedent that says you can't detain a minor longer than 72 hours. If you're keeping the family together, that also applies to the "parents". I put that in quotes, because it was discovered in 2019 (during the kids in cages controversy) that a lot of these kids don't belong to the adults accompanying them. So they started a policy of separating kids from adults if something looked off. If the paperwork looked forged. If the kid wasn't behaving the way you'd expect them to around a family member. Then they'd run a rapid DNA test. Oops. No relation. In about 2/3 of cases. They did some digging. There was an entire rent-a-kid business being run by the cartels. You kidnap a young kid, the kid is like a passport into the US. Three days isn't long enough to contact the country of origin and do a background check. And a lot of these countries don't cooperate with US authorities for that. During the 2020 debates, Trump was criticized for 5000 children who were in government care and still hadn't been reunited with their families. They were kidnapped and rented out. Locating their real families in foreign countries isn't easy. According to Brandon Judd, head of the CBP union, DNA testing stopped when Biden took office. We know some of these rent-a-kids are engaged in child labor (including sex work) in the US because they've been located and identified. There are 320,000 who are still missing. We don't know if they were smuggled back into Mexico to be recycled. We don't know whether they were ditched in the desert once they'd served their purpose. We don't know whether they've been forced into illicit labor. Now, as far as Homan goes, zero tolerance acted as deterrence. If you know you're not going to enjoy the treatment you get, you'll just stay home. 90% or more of these people don't fit the legal definition of asylee. They're not being persecuted in their home country. The cost benefit analysis changes if you know you're going to be detained for months and then, more often than not, sent back home. Same with "remain in Mexico". Their migrant camps are neither safe, nor comfortable. The moment Biden got elected, the caravans started coming up through Mexico, organized by NGOs heavily funded by George Soros. By the time he took office and flung the gates open, there were already hundreds of thousands waiting at the border to come in. It's a matter of incentives and disincentives.
