If you're having problems adjusting the carb to satisfy both the high speed and low speed needs, try cleaning the exhaust port and screens before doing anything else. The engine need to breath with allowing fuel and air in, and equally expelling it after it is burnt as well. Just an idea...

It needs the guard attached to the head of the shaft not only for safety but it also has a blade which keeps the string trimmed off to the required length which prevents the engine from becoming overloaded,it also makes it easier to tune !

@@HomeGaragechannel looks like it would be easy to have an engine fire while in use. Would never enlarge the fuel tank holes for the fuel lines. Gasoline gives no warning signs when it's going to go aflame. It just ignites violently and burns anything its on, in, or close to . Had that happen with a old homelite weed whipper. Got hot really quickly and I just threw it into a patch of dirt.

I have also made the mistake of enlarging the fuel line hose holes in tank with not so good results so i avoid that practice if all possible, i also find spraying a little lubricant on end of fuel line then insert into opening and rotate fuel line clockwise like you are tightening a bolt this will help push new line enough in tank so you can grab it with needle nose pliers. An oldie but goodie. Just picked one left in the alley with no string head. Surprised when it started right up with a little fuel in the carb throat. 72 PSI compression. Honda powered trimmers have a rubber bung that fits in the tank with the lines going through the rubber. With the bung out the filter will go through the hole. In a case like this I would use a step drill to drill a hole big enough for a Honda tank bung.

I have enlarged the holes a few times :D Reason was I did not have gas line small enough on hand. So I drilled the tank hole a little bigger. Making sure the gas line went in snugly. Of course the hole must be clean unlike that one in the video. It worked great for me. 2 years later still good. I dont see why there would be a risk of leaking if the line pulls through the hole with the same friction as it would originally be. Maybe its not so good? It was my own personal trimmer anyways. as a test I would remove the emission hose that leads from the engine to the air filter base, just disconnect it from the air filter base and leave the hose open. If that doesn't work, then your rings are letting too much oil past them.

@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 2 жыл бұрын
it depends if it has a clutch. With the engine off, I would try to spin the trimmer head by hand, if it wants to spin back into the same position, it Does NOT have a clutch, so the trimmer head is going to spin all the time even at idle. BUT if the trimmer head spins freely, it has a clutch, and only then, is the trimmer head, supposed to be stationary, when the engine is at idle.

My wife thinks I'm crazy for watching so many videos about broken lawnmowers... Can you do a video showing how you'd diagnose a motor surging under load? @HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think I can do a whole video on the surging but It might be in a Q&A video or a shorts. The problem with your surging is that pilot jet is clogged. It's on top of the carb, right below the Idle set screw. If the hole that clogs is extremely tiny, I something about .010" You'll need to use a single wire from a brass brush to clear it or a micro drill bit. IF you don't want to mess with it, just replace the carb with an aftermarket one for $15.

What your personal opinion on buying a OEM carb if they just build in in another country anyhow, basically your paying twice as much so the OEM gets to keep a portion in the country and the same amount of money still ends up in China(or Vietnam, Taiwan, India, Mexico etc....) It's almost like paying twice just to do the same thing you were trying not to

@@HomeGaragechannel "lower quality" is often debatable, a lot of small engine stuff like carbs have been being built so long that I would highly believe the same tooling is use on the aftermarkets as the OEM (granted with the be out that maintenance on the tooling and replacement might not happen as often, so spec might be out abit), I bet the majority are made with discontinued tooling or after hours runs on current oem tooling in the same factory

for me nope on the fuel tank it,s a waste of time and it,s a good way for the fuel line to shrink easier and become more brittle over time and for me i prefer the original size than modifying the fuel tank from some random persons idea is all.

Exact same thing as a toy Bill Murray Craftsman whatever they're all the same bolens they all pretty much have the same problems carbs fuel lines cylinder lose o-ring on the back of the black plastic piece usually that's the common things that go wrong with all of them unless they've just been running really lean

And though I'd never in large the holes in the fuel tank you can buy them fuel tanks brand new for like five bucks if the weed eaters worth putting them on it's not like you can find can't find these weedeaters Troy-Bilt Craftsman's Marie's whatever whatever it is you can find them just a dime-a-dozen laying everywhere

yes the tanks aren't that expensive. I might replace it but I have several parts trimmers with good tanks to choose from as well.

I have a weed wacker almost identical to this one but its been refurbished and no longer has a primer bulb. Where the primer bulb should be, instead there is a big screw and now I can't get it to start and there is plenty of mixed gas in there, non ethanol of course, so what should i do?

Wow, there's a bolt there? I would replace the carb, with a cheap aftermarket one, it's not hard to do.

@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you for ur suggestion, although I ended up not having to buy another carb. I figured I'd share with you the idea I suddenly had about it and tried and it worked. Which is, i slightly loosened the bolt cause i figured with it tightened, that would be like an empty primer bulb, in order to get gas to flow into a primer bulb u have to press it, so i figured the bolt was like a open/shut valve, tightened would be shut.. not allowing the flow of fuel so i loosened it and it cranked right up and performed great.

I would also like to add that because of you i now know how to take a carburator off, take it apart, and put it back together and how to assess what may be wrong. I fixed a friend of mine's featherlite last week thanks to you and your video that i watched multiple times and learned from. So thank you for teaching me something about a valuable necessity of mine that i use almost daily that probably most women don't know anything about. Because me and my mechanic broke up and are now seperated, and im temporarily unemployed at the moment so it's very important and self satisfying that I learn these things since i only have myself to depend on now. So ty! I will continue to follow your videos, .....which brings me to my next issue which is, replacing a weed wacker that has no pull string. I guess the previous owner yanked it so hard they yanked it right out, cause its completely gone so i can't even crank it......or can i....???? Any videos of this kind of fix?
