Ingvar came from my hometown strängnäs, he has his burialmound only 12km from city center and a rune script about his travels inbedded in the walls of our cathedral. (they used his runestone as a buildingstone and decoration when constructing the cathedral 800 years ago)

Swedish Vikings under the leadership of Rurik founded the power center Gårdarike around year 850. A few years later, they had also subdued the Kingdom of Kiev, which then became part of Rurik's growing empire. Already in the year 874, the Byzantine emperor had recruited Vikings from Gårdarike as his bodyguard. When Basil II formally founded the Varangian Guard in the year 988, the force consisted of at least 6,000 Vikings from Kievan Rus/Kiev, which was Byzantium's name for Gårdarike.

Julius Ceaser saw Vikings in boats sail past the Roman galleons in port in Alexandria, Egypt. He wrote about it. And he ordered his ships to pursue. Roman ships could make about 3 knots. The Viking boats made about 11 knots. Much faster. He even described the men as having long hair and beards. Blonde and red in color. At 11 knots the Vikings on a direct line out of the Mediterranean Sea could have, possibly made North America in 2 weeks. Plus many islands, currents, winds etc would have been of great help. The Vikings knew the Earth and had a form of latitude and longitude. They knew their position and where they were and, where they were going.

Cool story as always! I knew something about this story, but now I know for sure! Thanks! Are you sure about "early Russian state"? As I remember, Novgorod was (if we use term Early state) first russian-slavik state, and even that become state, strong and dominant, after Mongols. Yaroslav on the other hand was based and ruled in Kyev, Ukraine, or as you say early Ukrainian state. Not Russian..
