Here's some bonus interview footage from our shoot with Prof Tom Shippey, I hope you find it interesting. This is intended to be watched after you've seen the main video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYWuZXp4ltZ8qs0 Check the video description for a link to Tom's fantastic book about the Viking mindset & humour, "Laughing Shall I Die". Next video is Napoleon's Marshals Part 6, out in 3 weeks.

Id say hes speaking old Norwegian, and you too - since Iceland wasnt even an idea back then. As you probably know - it was guys from west Norway (and a boatload or two of celtic women) who settled Iceland.
@orarinnsnorrason46143 жыл бұрын
I know. My guess he's reading from his own book. But since he mentioned Snorri Sturluson his work is based on Sturlungasaga and Eddukvæði. His pronounciation of Icelandic sounding names and words are very good.

We rode the rivers of the Eastern trail Deep in the land of the Rus Following the wind in our sails And the rhythm of the oars No shelter in this hostile land Constantly on guard Ready to fight and defend Our ship 'til the bitter end We came under attack I received a deadly wound A spear was forced into my back Still I fought on When I am dead Lay me in a mound Raise a stone for all to see Runes carved to my memory Now here I lie on the river bank A long, long way from home Life is pouring out of me Soon I will be gone I tilt my head to the side And think of those back home I see the river rushing by Like blood runs from my wound Here I lie on wet sand I will not make it home I clinch my sword in my hand Say farewell to those I love When I am dead Lay me in a mound Place my weapons by my side For the journey to Hall up high When I am dead Lay me in a mound Raise a stone for all to see Runes carved to my memory To my memory To my memory

Any Englishman with red hair and blue eyes is in fact Viking. So are all the thousands of us descended from Scots with the same phenotypes. Granted, the Picts also had these characteristics, but just think, the coast of Scotland is smack in the middle of the sea voyage from Scandinavia to Iceland, and the Hebrides have many Viking burials within their shores. The Rus, Vikings who fared down the Volga, became Russians. The Normans with Rollo as their original founder, were Rollo's pals who decided to navigate the Seine, hold King Charles hostage, take one of his daughters as his bride and claim what is now Normandy, the low countries, Brittany, and Picardy as his own. His bastard grandson by Herleva de Valchaise was Guillaume le Batard, better known as William the Conqueror. So much of Western culture flows from the northern reaches of Europe, something of which only a very few are aware. They traded all over Europe and the Mediterranean and we make the ignorant mistake of assuming that they had little impact on what the world has become.
