DISCLAIMER: I am simply talking about the queens portrayal on the show. This says nothing about their personalities, how they act in the real world, or their character. I actually adore basically every queen discussed in this video. I adore a good villain.
In a new series where I take an in-depth look at some of the most reused editing tactics in RuPaul's Drag Race, today we're starting out with the most notorious. The feared villain edit. The edit that can tank a career. The edit that gets the angry mobs of fans riled up. Which queens got one, and which queens got it the worst? We're going to dive into every main season of the US series to find out!

Also that everything Roxxxy said was followed up with laughter from all parties. They're drag queens, reading is what they do. If it weren't for the "Seeing you in the bottom 2" line, I don't think they would've had material for a villain edit.

As someone who is a person of color, not to try and be offensive, but i think its cuz we generally are more honest about what we think vs white people and we will say things whites generally would be too scared to say. Maybe its because we got raised in a world knowing there is a very bad side to it automatically vs where whites generally dont always see that. Especially since many of the white queens on the shows biggest issue was having homophobic parents, or some who were open and said they were lucky to have the parents they had. Idk, im not trying to say this is how it is for all of us but its just an observation from my perspective as a latino american.

@@skinnylegend3487 as a southeast asian i want to say something similar about how asian queens get treated on the show also has ties with how asians are raised. a lot eastern cultural ideals are centered around respect, politeness, obedience, etc. which means asians tend not to be as confrontational/upfront with their emotions (which isn't a good thing nor a bad thing). this conflicts with what producers want to see from their cast, because obviously they want to make an entertaining tv show, and this means they want to see queens who get into drama. when you look at a lot of the asian queens who have gotten casted recently, they don't seem to be the type to really get into drama and fight someone head-on, (kahmora, rock, plastique, yuhua, kim chi). so while production does cast an asian queen every season for diversity, they are usually casted as early-outs because production doesn't think they'll make good tv.

My theory is that many people lack the tools to manage their emotions and triggers. So when their fave is "disrespected", they feel anger, cuz they relate to her in this parasocial way. They don't know how to solve that big emotion, so they dump it on the scapegoat girl that "robbed" their fave. And they feel justified, cuz other people are already sending her hate too. So there's no repercussion for their actions, and they get to feel better. Its shitty but it makes sense. Again, that's my theory. Take it as you will haha

Here’s how you have to look at it and I suggest the Talk Of Love Podcast by Lacey from Rock Of Love, who is a iconic Reality TV member from Vh1. She talks a lot about production and how it works BTS on a show like this. The producers are the real villains on these shows but for good reason. They just wanna make a fun TV show and the fans take it to heart for no reason. I get that Drag Race is the LGTBQ communities number one show that showcases everything about them but they forget one thing. How can you be about love and spread hate?? Let alone on a show that is only showing ONE HOUR OR 90 MINUTES of a THREE MONTH filming period or less or more. That just baffles. Like you said, enjoy the show and realize that it’s real yes but also it’s not a genuine competition and that everyone knows it has to make ratings and be entertaining. Laceys number one advice for everyone who does these shows is to take the most outrages part of your personality and turn it up to a ten because if you are boring then you are going home and that stuck with me since then

Silky's edit is great from a storyline perspective of just watching her come in and think she'd be a fan fave (Which is very hard due to the racial and size biases people have right away), but watching her be delusional about it until she realizes during the "Meh" moment just how poorly she handled the season and how she's going to be potrayed (You can see it in her last few episodes she knows she's toast). Both Gia and Laganja got the shady edit at some point. But Gia's image was softened by her funny confessionals, her being a bit on the "quirky dumb" character, and also info on her childhood and origins. She was also clearly a good friend for Laganja and was portrayed accordingly. She also did not go after one specific queen......... because April left early. Gia was clearly after queens that were not "feminine enough", but I guess everyone understood later that it was probably her internal conflict talking instead. Laganja got a bit of a shady edit sometimes, but mostly "airhead and delusional". Even during the "I'm feeling very attacked" moment, we can't help but laugh and also sympathize with her. Imo besides Darienne and Dela, no one went after another's throats in s6. Nothing felt like bullying. So, no villain material.

it's pretty telling the differences in the grace the editors were willing to give Roxxxy in season 5 vs. Phi Phi/Jaremi in season 4 when everyone remembers and talks about Roxxxy's story about her mother abandoning her and her sister and it's given proper weight and sympathy and Ru even cries with her...but no one seems to remember Jaremi talking about his experiences with his father's brutal abuse, and that moment is very quickly glossed over in the show when it does happen. anyway, rpdr editors: stop editing queens of color into one-dimensional villains, and fans, stop sending death threats.

Some Thoughts: 1. I'm surprised you didn't bring up S3 Shangie. It's another case of just a really shady edit, but I feel like the way she "played the game", the other queens generally finding her annoying, and her being the main booger to rival the Heathers would at least make her worth mentioning. 2. I think it's arguable that Bebe was the villain of AS3. Her personality was perfect for the villain, she eliminated Aja in a way that STILL feels shady, and it's implied that she wanted to eliminate Trixie, the obvious hero of the season. I think they only avoided this cuz she's the show's first winner, and tarnishing her name would be the opposite of why they brought her on the season to begin with. 3. Akeria is also one of the villains of S11???? I don't think she was the foil for someone else, but I and several others have noticed that Akeria was always INVOLVED and present in drama, even though the drama wasn't about her. She would often be the "instigator" for Rajah and Silky, and I think if they are declared villains, she should be too (or again, at least mentioned)

In the last couple of years, there have been several explaining that whiteness is centered around conformity and comfortability. The moment those two things are disrupted, the friction causer must be vanquished. That's why it's always been hard for Black people - as the pillar of whiteness is anti-Blackness - can never be truly successful in white spaces. Other communities of color experience this too, yet there's a proximity to whiteness that almost shields them from whiteness's anti-Black madness - Model Minority myth, Latino/a/e community being extremely complicated to classify racially, and the virtual extermination and confinement of Indigenous people to acres of land. This, and other shows regardless of format, play this up to a T. I think that Raven was clearly the villain of season two. Yet, the producers edited her villainy and shadiness in a fun and sort of aspirational way. Violet Chachki received the same favorable villain edit. Had Ginger Minj been thinner, she would have probably received that edit too. I'm just sick of shows constantly playing into these tropes because they reinforce whiteness and white delusion/supremacy. So many people express how this show is eye-opening about communities some people may never come in contact with. For folks who may never come in to contact with Black people of any sexual and/or gender identity in real life outside of media representation, this is doing us no favors.

You know in Season 5, with the Alyssa Edwards/CoCo Montrese storyline, it almost seemed like they gave CoCo kind of a villain edit in that. Or at least a similar edit as The Vixen in her thing with Eureka. I think the producers knew people would gravitate towards Alyssa, so they made it out like CoCo was coming for her for having to complete her Miss Gay America reign. They didn’t do that good a job explaining why CoCo was so upset with Alyssa, they almost made it out like she was bitter and playing the victim card for something that was kinda silly and nonsensical. Even in the bit where the two talked about it privately, the edit for CoCo’s side of the story was kinda confusing. So in that way, I think they were trying to make her the villain of that storyline, would eliminate Alyssa in their lip-sync, and then Alyssa would be avenged by CoCo getting eliminated the very next week. That said, I saw an interview CoCo did with Johnny McGovern, and she did a way better job explaining her feelings and side of the story than the show did.

My take on the "villain edit" is this: Season 1: Akashia or Rebecca. Queens enjoyed Shannel from what I remembered, it was more of a Tammie Brown moment for me as Shannel was against the JUDGES rather than the queens. Season 2: Raven or Morgan. Raven attacked like literally everyone, and this was highlighted a lot in the reunion. Tyra...I can definitely see it as well, but Tyra didn't actually attack the queens...the queens attacked her. Season 3: The Heathers. Straight up, no explanation. Season 4: Phi Phi ofc and I would like to say Willam. A lot of people argued with her, especially in Untucked and Willam always snapped back. However, they are more of a grey area. Season 5: Rolaskatox in general, especially Roxxxy. I always thought Serena had a delusional, uneducated edit. Season 6: I'd say Courtney or Darienne. Darienne was worse off, however. Bianca had a shady but lovable edit. Season 7: Ginger in untucked, Kennedy on the actual viewing. Season 8: Acid Betty straight up. Season 9: I would say Alexis Michelle, though it wasn't really a villain edit, more of a shady edit, and it wasn't even really that. Season 10: The Vixen was supposed to be the Villain, but instead fans took it out more on Eureka lol, bad production I guess. Season 11: Rajah O Hara for me, Silky was just unlikeable because she was delusional. Fans were supposed to like Silky because production thought they would love Eureka. It just backfired. Season 12: SP was supposed to have the villain edit but it was going to be with Gigi, not Jaida (source was from U or Uckey Lee). But Brita just got it because of her feud with Aiden. Season 13: It felt like it should have been Kandy, Mik, and Tina. NO idea why they did it on Kandy, Tina had way more potential. But production thought that they could have made Tamisha a villain, but she didn't last long on the season. And s13 felt so underproduced in storylines that none of them really were a villain. Sorry this is long, but I wanted to say my thoughts on it because the only "true" villain edit is really Phi Phi. But really the villains are the fans...

Everyone should really watch the S5 top 3 react to Jinkx' winning, like not the episode but a video on youtube where they react to the actual winner Roxxxy is so freaking supportive of Jinkx' winning, she hugs her and just is so nice while Alaska is having a breakdown

The difference for me between Tatianna and the other shady queens on season 2 is from what I remember most of her shade came after other people were being rude first. More of a defensive shade than an offensive shade. She didn’t usually just start shit for no reason it was in reaction to other people. That being said her shade is amazing 😂

I never thought of Roxy as the vilain of s5, unlike Detox. It seems relatively obvious that Roxxie was so under her own pressure to compete against a rather new commer queen. DETOX on the other hand...

I think another queen who got a little bit of villain edit in season 11 was Akeria when they showed her (and even RuPaul calling her out in the reunion) that she was instigating the things in the makeover challenge. With Kandy I personally don't like her attitude on the show cause is a little bit of similar to Silky in terms of looking for camera time but I also don't think that she is a villain or whatever I think most people dislike her and portraits her as a villain is because the fight with Tamisha or because a lot of people says that she was "pushed to the finale" cause RuPaul didn't let her go when she lost against Symone and I also think that this season has everyone having their fair share of "villainous" edit, even Utica or Gottmik got a little bit of villain edit, I think Lala Ri was the only one saved from that edit cause at the end she was Miss Congeniality but her aside everyone got a villain edit I think. I agree that Milk was like Valentina in AS4 that they easily can be called Delusionals more than villains per se (and I love Milk and Valentina) I hated that when Gia went home they wanted to paint Latrice as a "villain" or a "bitter Queen" using the effects and everything, cause Latrice is such a sweetheart and a loveable Queen.

Watching your video, I think these edits help to reveal a greater villain: the “fans”.

Great video. Although I don’t think Acid Betty was edited as much as some other queens were. For me, she got this editing during judges critiques because of the music cues, but when she was with the other girls, you could notice how uncomfortable they were with her mean unapologetic attitude. Especially in the episode where she read Trixie’s makeup to filthy. Despite of Derrick and Bob were the only ones who called her out, the other ones seemed very mad as well.

Kandy had a “redemption” edit, she started like a villain and ended like a hero/ fan fav
