@@markwiemels really appreciate this, Mark. And I'm sure you will! Although admittedly, making these kinds of videos is fun, but also pretty exhausting. And I'm not altogether. Sure yet if it's worth it aside from feeling proud of what I've made.😄. KZbin is so weird. The videos that I do that require very little effort usually blow up. And the ones that I slave over don't make much of a dent haha. It's that classic cliche.

This lens certainly piques my interest. I love the Sony 20mm 1.8 G and probably end up using it way more than I should, and this lens ticks so many of the same boxes while bettering on price, a-b focus, FOV and maybe, just maybe, creaminess. That's a thing, I know it is...your image is Deakins clean while slipping in a bit of milky milk. Or that could be Jeschke Effect, I'll leave that up to someone else to decide. Great video. Oh and big high five for the shout out over on No Film School 👊

Do you think is a good option for apsc, i have a sony apsc camara and the mount works with any e mount lens, i know that it won't be 16mm on apsc but i'd love to see how diferent it would be copared to de apsc line like the sigma 16mm 1.4 or the 15g 1.4 since the price is not too far away from those options, nice review by the way

Got mine last week for photography to use with my A7ii and A7IV. Mainly intended for a trip to NYC coming up. Wide cityscape shots, low light etc. Had a try with it at home and this lens is very responsive and razor sharp. Only criticism I have is that the corners suffer from vignetting at F1.8 and the profile provided by Viltrox is utterly useless for this.

Thank you so much for this kind feedback! So I use 82mm VND's from Freewell that I like a lot. DunnaDidit did a really good video on these. Because I use a 2-5 stop and a 6-9 stop you have until 3 stops ND before vignetting on the 2-5 and you have until about 7 stops ND on the 6-9 before vignetting. In general I just get 82mm filters now and use step rings. Hope this is helpful.

I think wide angles are great for venue establishing shots, and dance floor shots where you're in on the action. I've always used long lenses for everything else at weddings though. It's just too hard to capture the intimacy unless you're in people's faces with wide lenses

I really like what i see from this lens! I bought a Sony 14GM couple of month ago, and it's fantastic lens! But if I were buying today, maybe I would choose this Viltrox over the Sony. Because of 3 reasons. Viltrox is 3 times cheaper, it has possibilities to put a standard filters on it, and to me 16mm is a bit more useful for my needs, because 14mm is a bit extremely wide. On the other hand the bokeh on GM is amazing in my opinion. It's so pleasing and smooth for a wide lens! And sharpness is crazy! It deserve the GM badge! However, this Viltrox is very very interesting! And 16mm with the 1.8 is amazing combination!
@ScottJeschke
@ScottJeschke Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this info, Vlad! Always good hearing from you. Yeah, you can't go wrong w a GM. I had a similar feeling w my Tamron 17-28. On the one hand it's a great lens, but I only really use the 17-20 range because my 28-75 covers the rest. So now w the Viltrox I just don't see myself using the Tamron much, and kind of wish I used that budget for an Aputure or something. Oh well. So much new gear all the time. Ha. Impossible to keep up. Not that we should 😂. As for the Sony price versus the Viltrox, it's crazy how much more expensive some of them are. I didn't even realize until I saw Jason Morris review yesterday. 3x the price is dead on.
@MagnetiqLabs
@MagnetiqLabs Жыл бұрын
@@ScottJeschke yes, it's crazy expensive! $1500! But i bought it used with the price around $1000. In fact it was actually new without any sign of usage. I noticed that often on a market of used lens there is lenses with good price practically almost not used. My theory is that sometimes people buy the ultra wide angle lenses, without experience in ultra-wide, and the results is disappointing for them. Because it is really easy to receive WOW result from 85mm lens, but with ultra wide angle you really need to practice and understand how to work with it. So they selling their ultra-wide lenses because they do not use it and it just lie on their shelf. I was like that too. After a couple of trying a ultra-wide lens i decided that it's not for me and ultra-wide is a boring territory :-) Only maybe 2-3 years ago i realised the power of ultra-wide lens! Especially for video! But in my opinion, the combination of ultra-wide lens and bright aperture is the key to magic! Wide field of view with bokeh is unreal! When you have a F2.8 on a such a wide lens, bokeh starts to be boring and magic is gone. So for me - Ultra wide angle + F1.8 = magic 🙂
@ScottJeschke
@ScottJeschke Жыл бұрын
@@MagnetiqLabs I think you're definitely onto something with that theory. I got mine used as well. I always forget that's a good option for lenses. Lenses especially. And I totally agree about stylistic intentionality with white lenses. it requires a lot more from composition, lighting and blocking of subjects. It's a little less forgiving.
@MagnetiqLabs
@MagnetiqLabs Жыл бұрын
@@ScottJeschke yes, it's hard to work with wide angle. But in the other hand it's amazing how little movement you need to make footage look dynamic with ultra-wide lens! Now i see that in majority of creative video ads there is this kind of lenses used. Because everything looks fun, surreal and very energetic through the ultra wide lens :-)

how do you find it compares to the tamron 17-28mm? I'm torn as I feel like I prefer wider shots but currently have the 28-75 tamrom lens and looking to replace/get another lens and have been thinking about replacing with the 17-28mm but this seems really intriguing!
@ScottJeschke
@ScottJeschke Жыл бұрын
I love my Tamron 17-28, but honestly if you have the 28-75 I 1000% would get this one instead. It's funny because I mentioned this in the video but ended up cutting it for brevity, but I recently bought a used Tamron 17-28 and though it's a great lens, I would have saved my money and gone for this had I known it was coming. For my 17-20mm is the only part of the Tamron that's worthwhile. Once you go past that's it's just not different enough from the 28-75 to be justifiable. I think this one being 1.8 really sets it apart. And it basically has no barrel distortion, so it's way more usable at 16 than the Tamron at 17

@@ScottJeschke thank you so much! Makes a heap of sense in terms of 17-20 being the most worthwhile when in reality 16mm is wider and more useable in a lot of situations, plus can always crop in, all very good points! Will definitely pick this one up then.

I didn't experience any issues. The shots of my son at the drawing table are where you'll probably get the best indication. It gets a little jellowy on the edge of the frame. But I didn't experience shakiness. Very smooth. But I'll take another look and report back 👊

@@DSLRMAN01 for this one I used the phantom LUT. Really solid color, curve, etc. I boosted the saturation and contrast a little bit in post. The biggest thing I've learned with the new slog color science is not to overexpose as we've learned w 8bit for years. I expose at or around 0:0 global exposure and trust my image. And the rest is just predetermining my lighting ratios. How dark I want the room versus the subject, or the streaming light, etc. I think a lot of the clarity comes from lighting, and creating good contrast ratios w light, etc.
@DSLRMAN01

Really like what you did here with your approach to a gear review. I heard the Rondo Alla Turca in there and wonder if in any part you included that because of it's placement in the magic xylophone episode from Bluey (I heard the piece about 10 times today as my daughter acted out a scene from it). Again, great video; I like that you are still able to tell a story even in a gear review (which makes your suggestion even more compelling).
