Selling a flashy mix of vintage and couture, Allan & Suzi's shop was a destination for designers, club kids, and fashion freaks in a city that was always changing around it.

What made NYC so special and unique is now gone, replaced by sterile, generic shops that you can find in any other city

yup. all across NYC. I think a LOT of this happened when Mike Bloomberg was Mayor....kissed landlord's butts...thought it was a way yo create positive change...but now...so many FRANCHISES...souless GAPs, Starbuck's hat have noting to do with anything unique about my city. You still see a store...a restaurant/bar here and there....bu almost always....the bsiness owns the property...no leases. (sigh)

Me too! Pearl Paint was my first stop when in New York. Only place to get things totally unavailable elsewhere. The slanted wood floors, the endless stairs and staff with knowledge. Not the same ordering on the internet. Another experience younger kids will miss out on.

Manhattan is now essentially made up of Transplants who don't mind paying $5000 for a tiny Studio as long as it's in the "right neighborhood". Areas that used to be a cool, cheap place to hang out is now gentrified and has a Starbucks on every other block. It's depressing seeing NYC evolve into this. =(

The last line followed by the laughter captured what made the shop and old timey NYC so great. "Look at us." Allan and Suzi did not give a hoot about what anyone else thought about them. They did their own thing, with an eye towards making money so they could keep on doing it, and it was fabulous for everyone that visited their store. If everybody is concerned about what others think of them you get conformity and the boring BS that NYC is becoming. A store like this is impossible without a free market by the way. Government regulations hurt small businesses like this most because it costs money to meet the standards and they have less than huge corporations.
