First! I am not a huge Stones fan but enjoy hearing and learning how they grew as a band into ruling the world for almost 6 decades. I met Mick Jagger in 1995 at he Ritz Carlton Hotel and they had already been together for over 30 years and that was almost 30 years ago!

You met Jagger? Well, that's an awesome story. I hope he was kind to you at least. You never know what you're going to get on a given day or time with certain celebrities. Except maybe for Van Morrison. That's pretty much a guarantee what you're going to get from him at any time. LOL.

the "Amplified" ch. has two video doco's on the stones. The latest being release just two weeks ago. They are both quite good. (IMHO)

There's a really good one on Harry Nilsson, actually he'd be a pretty interesting one to do a vinyl session on. Man, budget or not you do a great job. The love you have for music shines through....that's what counts

I consider this one of the very best early albums of theirs - before the mid/late 60s LPs.

Yeah, it's not bad. It's just not Sticky Fingers and it's not Exile. Those albums were when the Stones were hitting on all 8 cylinders and they never really repeated that era again. Too many drugs. Too much alcohol and bad blood between Mick and Keith.

Great review Billy! My copy of this album is about 40 years old....I love early Stones.....2 of my favorites that don't seem to get much love are Black and Blue....and Love You Live...those 2 records just do it for me when it comes to the Stones....I love the entire catalog but have my favorites....of course "Exile" is a great time as well.....thanks....maybe a review of one of those sometime?

Oh you bet they'll all come up as soon as we get to them in chronological order. I have over 20 Rolling Stones albums on my big list of 600. Out of Our Heads will be up in the queue very soon! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for episode two Billy. The stones had to do what the Beatles did with “Hard days night” and that feat was to create an album of all original music. With the release of “Aftermath” the Stones did it and that particular album is my personal favorite by The Rolling Stones. I’ve listened to all the stones catalog over the years and the early pre Aftermath was always that re package approach for the American market and the later post Jones Carries a Completely different vibe. The Jones stones is my favorite era of this band. Thanks again Billy, you have a great talent for this programming you are treating us all to. Love it a lot!🎶

Thanks for all of your insight. I'm not an expert on the Stones by any stretch, but I have surely been listening to them (either on purpose or not on purpose) since about 1970 and I have to say my personal fave is Sticky Fingers. Wild Horses, Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile, etc. Love the Mick Taylor years and the Gram Parsons influence!

Am glad that you have spoken about the Beatles/Stones relationship, from what I have read over the years relations were relatively cordial. I think it's hard to compare them as they contrast so differently in many ways, however, they certainly defined much of the 60s in their own ways. Yes, I think John Lennon's comments are probably just him being contentious! For me...the best Stones album is Beggars Banquet. I wonder in what direction musically they would have taken had Brian Jones lived.
@memoryfield
@memoryfield 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Beggars Banquet for sure started that crazy great run of four or five albums that was their best era. I wonder about Brian Jones too, but I do know that had he lived he would have had to clean up his lifestyle because the final two years of his life he was barely able to contribute much at all to anything the Stones were doing. He just couldn't stay sober long enough to get anything recorded for them, so Keith just kind of stepped in and played all of his parts for him. He was a mess.
@joannehughes5249
@joannehughes5249 2 жыл бұрын
Brian Jones certainly was a mess but a very talented guy. Am not too keen on most of the Stones stuff after the mid 70s to be honest. Your are right, they produced some fantastic sounds in a relatively short space of time. Mind you, you gotta give it to Mick being able to strut like he does on stage at his age, takes alot of bloody stamina.

For my money ( and this is ONLY my take on the Stones folks ) I always ADORED the early Rolling Stones 1963-1966. Being a rock & roll purist, the EARLY Stones combined pure Chicago blues with a toe tappin rock & roll beat. And Mick Jagger was an AMAZZZING blues singer for his early age! I own the early records on vinyl in near mint & I treasure them! And I also adored Brian Jones before the drugs took over as the most out front, fan adored Rolling Stone. From what I know, it was HE who started the band. After the 1966 release ''Aftermath'', the Stones got a heavier feeling & mood. Still terrific, still rockin, but that early rock & roll feeling changed for me. And I continued to love all the records they made up until the early 1980's . But the early Stones were, well, really something special, really something very COOL......GRRREAT REVIEW BILLY!!

Thanks again, Danny. Glad that we're seeing eye to eye on all of this. The Stones had a long way to go at this point but yeah, I still enjoy their early recordings too. But Sticky Fingers is still my fave!

A great version "Little Read Rooster" can be found on the "London Howlin' Wolf Sessions" LP (CD). It actually got some FM radio play when first released in 1971. I loved it the first time I heard it. Of course the musical contributions of Winwood and Clapton probably helped. Just had to buy the record and more recently the double CD. (that contains the Red Rooster alternate take also)

Billy. That's quite a man-cave you have there....... The Stones were the "bad-boys" of rock back then. That was the image they wanted to put forth (and did)......
@memoryfield
@memoryfield 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they certainly cultivated that image for all it was worth. Seems tame in comparison for many of the rock acts that came later in the 70's and 80's. Funny how perspectives change, and what was considered risqué back then in today's world wouldn't necessarily even register on the morality radar.

Hi Billy and the team, There has always been confusion for me in the Stones since their origin. Brian Jones welcomed the best bluesmen of the new wave of bluesmen to his parents. Jazz, blues, that's what Jones wanted to follow. Jagger and Richards swear to follow this music with him. Finally, they all agree, some assuming, others not, to follow the codes of the mainstream with Oldhman. After having signed the implicit contract on the musical and visual image, what is their mission to popularize the blues? As I have already told you, young people don't give a damn about bluesmen and jazzmen. How does the life of a black man like Robert Johnson interest a young white bourgeois? Besides, his music makes him laugh. The young white has nothing to do with the poor life of a black like Johnson! Jagger and Richards got it right and they made the choice that saves the most money possible! A group trapped by its contradictions. The stones do not offer anything to the public, it is the public who run the stones. They call it being cool. As for me Billy, I like to listen to A degree of Murder by B. Jones, Bridges to Babylon, Steel Weels... All the products made between 1975 and 1998, a period when Ronnie brought a certain balance.

Back then we referred to the Beatle songs as "making love" and the Stones songs as flat out "fucking".

Don't You Panic by the Stones was a nice little jingle. Brian Epstein liked to meet other men in public restrooms. When I saw Janis Joplin and Grace Slick perform I didn't want to start screaming and run up to them and tear off their clothes or whatever the girls did when they caught up to Paul MCartney. Just saying Andrew Loog Oldham is enough to confuse someone. I had that album, by the way. Mick Jagger, in an interview, claimed the Stones did have enough sex but not enough money.
