Wow you left out a lot of detail about the shooting. Jim drew first but his gun got caught on his jacket or suspenders so Short actually got the first shot off which took off Jim's trigger finger. He attempted to switch the gun to his left hand but Luke shot him in the chest and killed him. Luke then shot him again to make sure he was dead.

I understood it was his thumb. BTW, Bat Masterson was a witness to the shooting and backed Short's version.

I've read a ton of books on the old west and familiar with Luke Short and Jim Cortwright shootout and both their lives. When I saw he was a bounty hunter I expected new information I didn't know but alas.

Most bullies are not that tuff. He picked on Short; he stood up to him. I expect he was not expecting that. I believe his gun got caught on his suspenders or something like that. The problem is most people do not want to engage bullies because they just want to live in peace. You have a lot a stake if you get killed.

A description I read online said Cortwright had "brown" eyes. The photos show he had light colored eyes, either blue or green. Hell of an ass kicker. Hard to believe that Courtright lost in a legitimate one on one gunfight.

From what I gather a sober Luke Short was a dangerous man in a gun fight. Then theirs always the chance that it just ain't your day.

@@tritchie6272 Good point Tritchie. Your comment reminds me of when decades ago a TV station in the Chicago area interviewed Richard Speck who had killed multiple young student nurses in Chicago. Speck was in prison in Joliet and the interviewer asked him years later about the killings. Speck said, "I guess it just wasn't their day?" Nice fella. Thanks for the note. I am guessing that in a previous life I lived in the wild west and that is why I am so enamored with that time period?

Terrible grammar being used in the narration. Rarely did two gunfighters actually face each other in a fair draw and fire shootout as depicted in the movies. Most gunfighters were bushwhackers and shot their opponent in the back, or from hiding. And I believe it was Wyatt Earp who said being fast was overrated, and that sure and straight was better (paraphrased).
