I have to say, that I felt watching "The Power of Myth" when if first broadcast, that my life was changed. I felt I had just sat at the foot of "the Master of Wisdom". Joe Campbell explained so many things and helped me think about life in a new way. Thank you Joe.

This describes my own experience of discovering Campbell through the series when it first aired in 1988. I can’t think of anything before or since having such an immediate or powerful impact on my thinking; I was shocked to find that my exposure to Campbell’s thought and sense of wonder actually WAS changing my life profoundly, however trite the phrase. In the years since I learned that hundreds of thousands like ourselves were just as transformed by the wellspring of inspiration that flowed from this remarkable man like an electric current. My gratitude towards Campbell is inexpressible, as is my gratitude to Bill Moyers for posing exactly the right questions at every beat throughout all six hours. I generally avoid absolutes, but Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth is the best television series I’ve ever come across, period. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it, because those six hours feel more like six minutes.

My brother Rodrigo, I thank you very sincerely for these most beautiful words and for sharing your hope with us. In my heart I have nurtured this longing for a world enlightened by love and empathy for 60 years now, but only in recent years did I begin to somehow feel - in a very strange manner that I can’t describe or even understand - that such an age might actually be drawing near, and possibly even dawn within my lifetime. I’ve mentioned this to virtually no one, because there’s so little that I could say. I haven’t had any experience or epiphany, I haven’t witnessed anything, and I’m not a believer in revelation; nothing has been imparted to me. I’ve never seen a spirit guide, an extraterrestrial, a UFO or ghost, and I’m not religious unless we call my love for our roughly 7,846,000,000 family members a religion. There’s nothing I could point to that might help me convey what I’m sensing lately, nothing tangible to bear witness for me apart, possibly, from a quickening pulse. Still, I can’t deny an immensely strong sensation persuading me just shy of certainty that something momentous is almost due to appear over the horizon. Could it be what you describe as our collective virgin birth? I wonder. Or as my late friend Forry Ackerman liked to say, “It wonders me.” Thanks again, brother. Love

@@GrantTarredus The divine hyperintelligent vibration gives birth to our consciousness bringing forth physical man into existence inside this realm we call earth, that which we dwell is inside the mind of "GOD"; MAN is GODs "physical" avatar in this realm; we all are GOD separated through ego and personality. GOD and MAN co-exist. The infinite and the finite. MAN is the creative force of GOD, GOD acts on mans behalf constantly creating this reality as man perceives his truths to be. What man believes becomes reality. The duality of man and god, and the mind there-of is what we are witnessing; people were asleep so GOD was asleep. Reality had become what the evil side of GODS mind wanted to become "evil" "won" but evil never can win really. As the saying goes "all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Evils only choice is to brainwash the good men but the great awakening showed enough good men the need to fight. People don't understand the significance of what we are going through which is truly to be the ultimate battle between good and evil and why the struggle of this battle is important. Struggle is what helps man grow to know and understand GOD. Good always come to know GOD while evil disregard GOD for their own made up god as evil is a manifestation of materialistic greed but evil cannot see that our realm is not physical but is an illusion; such a magnificent light show movie projection being put on by GOD at all times for our entertainment so that we may grow in spirit, and knowledge in ways that we desire. Its all so extremely complicated yet so simple at the same time. Our imaginations dictate reality via our subconscious mind(GODS MIND) that we all co-share and co-create within. Our conscious mind is the gatekeeper to GODS MIND in which our goal is to only let loving thoughts, GOOD GODLY thoughts enter; rejecting evil thought and banishing it from existing in our realm and that is what is currently going on; the more we have understanding of our surroundings the better GOD can help us organize by divine intelligence. The great awakening is GOD auditing the realm; and the consensus of our reality dictates the next. The new reality that is being birth by our collective consciousness is this virgin birth. Where fresh thought untainted by evil will exist as MAN enters into a new stage of spiritual evolution while those who are not ready will go off into another reality and relive and relearn from their mistakes as we all have time and time again. The best way to help our world change is by actively denying evil access to dwell in this realm, its pretty simple. See something you don't like, reject it completely within your soul and GOD acts in miraculous ways to act on your behalf, and the same is said for good. Will good into the world on someone elses behalf and GOD acts on yours; once everyone is doing this our realm will be paradise once again.

He really puts aspects into light so simply they are easy to understand. Because human beings are being coerced into just seeking pleasure in todays world, we are being help in the lower three centres, or chakras, and this is a problem. When you try to speak to people about higher concepts that the lower three chakras, they think you are a crazy man. Times are changing rapidly and this knowledge seems to be spreading like wildfire, which is amazing. Thanks to Joseph and all his research as he breaks all this down so well. Campbell called all mythology (which t him included the Bible) the penultimate truth, because the ultimate truth is something that cannot be put into words. He was much like Albert Einstein, who looked for a unified theory for all the sciences . . . but with myth, Campbell looked for what Unified all of our spirituality. As a Christian, I think that kind of study expands our understanding of God well beyond the scriptures which were left for us.

Do you think there's going to be any future great philosophers from this year 2021? Just take a look at what most of our future humans aspire to be and ask people from the age 12 to 21 and they want to be either like the Kardashians or a basketball player or a famous social media influencer its looking pretty bleak.

Disjointed, hacked up, out of context bits and pieces of Campbell"s message? The world needs, for example, the full Moyer / Campbell interviews uncut, But this foumdation is instead hacking Campbell's core messages up into tiny little disjointed hacked up bits and pieces. They are doing that as teasers to commercially monetize Campbel's work. The very nature of Campell's works must remain freely available, intact, in context, and sui- generis on a "giving foot forward" monetization model, which primarily is not the JC Foundation monetization model. Does this greedy foundation have copyrights on these works? Why can't anyone post these works up on IE. You Tube etc. free uncut unedited? For instance the full uncut Campbel / Moyers series. Why is Moyer not acting to counter this outrage? How to obtain these works intact & unedited now like when Campbell was alive without profiteering? That would be Campbell's will. The Campbell Foundation, in the guise of proliferating Campbell's body of work, is instead fragmenting it for commercial monetary motives. So aggravating! Seriously any effort to keep Campbell's work free, and free of being hacked up, and free of being exploited by the world system, then count us in. Metaphorically speaking: God was out for a stroll one day with the devil following along & imitating God. God was carrying something "he" had picked up along the way. The devil runs up and asks. "whatcha got there God?" God replies, "I got the truth." The devil then says," give it to me & I will organize it for you!". JC Foundation you need to stop "money changing on the temple steps".

Much like the Athena's virgin maidens who bore baskets and sang songs,they were called Parthenos or parthenon,and this is word Matthew used because he knew what they were based on the hebrews' own religious consecrated virgins,and newly married devotees to God. the Almah (young maidens) were a type of virgin, and not a regular Bethulah virgin because Alamot(plural for Almah) were a religious devotee of the nun type order of Alamot,and this would be like a while after she had just had marriage relations perhaps a couple times so she had no longer any firm hyman by the first season after marriage,and she still was a Almah for that first season or for perhaps first month. Anyway,if one says matthew had a bad translation,that is unacceptable because the gospels are infallible word of God and therefore he could not have made a mistake in referring to isaiah's prophey for mary as a virgin,and the story says she was because luke 1:34“ How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” on being told she was to give birth while she was bethrothed as a Almah religious devotee but was not fully married yet nor had relations yet. but even new married devotees for the first month or first season could still be called Almah,and were not necessarily virgins but could be too or had just recently departed from virginity.In mary's case,she was virgin almah still,because she was a religious devotee type nun.1 Corinthians 7:25 mentions parthenon virgins,and 2 corinthians 11:2 is virgins too parthenon,and they knew Almah meant a type of virgin and or as in proverbs;a newly married virgin who had just departed virginity.

It's extremely doubtful that the concept of the virgin birth of Jesus by way of a "fourth chakra" was understood by early Christians in anything like the manner that Campbell outlines -- even among the groups that promoted the doctrine of the virgin birth. And not all sects did so. The Ebionites and Marcionites, for example, did not. The virgin birth is implied only in Matthew and Luke, and those books did not appear until the end of the first century. Paul never mentions that Jesus was born of a virgin. And he clearly would have mentioned it if he had believed it to be so.

He's not comparing the christian birth to other religions to say Christians understood other religions and their origins. He's pointing out what we, as humans, inherently understand about birth, death, and rebirth before we even try to transcribe it into religion. Campbell called Mythology the penultimate truth, where the ultimate truth can't be put into words - but we all tried in some form or another. Moyers doesn't follow what Campbell is trying to say until later in the interview, and confuses the issue here.

Someone asked what Isaiah 9:6 was about... here is the verse - with explanation below. Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Explaination: INSIDE of a person is a 'woman' - the 'one flesh' that God 'created' (NOT the 'man' that LORD GOD 'formed', then separated, and advised should be joined BACK together again, as what GOD has 'joined together' let man not separate). As GOD created man as MALE AND FEMALE, created them 'he' - and called their name... 'Adam'. God's creation of man was 'androgynous' or 'male AND female'. And thus... it is what COMES OUT of a MAN that defiles him. Thus... one should be able to see 'the WOMAN' of Revelation 12. IF this 'woman' inside of you does what is GOOD in the eyes of GOD, the FRUIT of that choice is then 'male' - and acceptable to GOD and taken into HEAVEN. BUT... if the 'woman' inside of you does what is EVIL in the eyes of GOD, the FRUIT is then a 'female', 'daughter of man', and another 'woman' or 'seed bearer'... which is then another 'opportunity' for something to come of it, but then it is NOT a 'first fruit' and NOT ACCEPTABLE to GOD. THIS is also (spiritually)... the 'VIRGIN BIRTH' as it DOES NOT require 'physical union' to produce FRUIT, or to say... THE WORD MADE (into) FLESH. This is what Jesus was referring to when He spoke with Nicodemus... or being BORN of WATER & SPIRIT, and also what is referred to with Mary (Jesus mother) AND ALSO, why Jesus is called - 'the Word', as it is the COMMAND of GOD through which everything that has been made or will ever BE MADE... is made. Note that the daughters of man, became 'evil' spirits upon the earth... and thus 'spirit give birth to spirt' is then true. Flesh gives birth to flesh is simple to understand - as this is an 'earthly thing' vs. and lacks the complexities of 'heavenly things'.

@ChrisMusante
@ChrisMusante 7 ай бұрын
@Hello-bi1pm - well, perhaps - since every one is built of 'both'... seems weird to say - 'genders'; but there is a limitation because what I am referring to is purely spiritual. But I suppose, that in much the same way as a plant that is exposed to conditions that are too harsh, can change it's gender and become 'confused' (I know for a fact that this can happen with Cannabis) persons living under extremely stressful conditions could, I suppose, experience the same response, and reflected in a spiritual way verses a physical one. As a person's body really can't change from one to the other. I heard somewhere that as the fetus develops, all of the start out as female, and then the genetics causes the assignment as the fetus forms into a child. I know this much, I don't have the heart to pick on someone who suffers from the situation - if they are suffering from something... what kind of a jerk would add to their 'suffering' ? It is interesting to me how - given that it is considered a 'condition' - it is definitely 'spreading' as if it was communicable. The context above is more about dissecting scriptures to present their true meanings, in hopes of pointing out the source of the world's religions woes.

His work rides on the back of Jung’s claim of a universal consciousness, as defined by archetypes appearing cross cultures, my question is how do you measure and quantify the degree to which an archetype is similar across cultures, how similar are they? Rough, generalized comparisons can be made, but you need evidence far greater than this if you want to prove something as profound as a universal consciousness.

What a brilliant explanation! Especially the way Campbell brings in both Christian and Hindu religion to explain the difference between the animal "pelvic basin" nature and the heart, human nature. So the Virgin Birth can be thought of as the emergence of the heart of human compassion but without depending on the purely animal nature - aggression, consumption, lack of compassion - all the stuff that are symbolized not only by Satan but also by those who mocked and crucified Jesus.

From a talk by Osho There are a few points to be understood. One: Jesus can be born only out of a virgin woman. But remember, virginity has nothing to do with celibacy -- not, at least, for me. Virginity is something immensely different. Don't reduce it to sex. Sex can be virgin, and celibacy may not be virgin. Things are very complicated. If a man is celibate and thinks constantly of sex, he is not virgin. On the other hand, if a man makes love to a woman, or the woman makes love to a man, and there is no thought of sex -- no sexuality in the head, no cerebral sex -- it is virgin. Virgin means pure. Virgin means uncontaminated. Virgin means spontaneous. Virgin means simple, innocent. Now, sex is not the problem. Sexuality is the problem. There are people who are continuously thinking of sex. And the more you try to enforce some celibacy on yourself -- you become a nun or a monk -- the more you think of sex. In fact, then you don't think about anything else, you only think of sex because that is your starved part. It takes revenge, it becomes very aggressive. It comes again and again, bubbles up, surfaces in the head. And you go on doing prayer to keep it repressed, and you go on doing this and that -- a thousand and one things. But whenever there is rest, it is there. You go to sleep and it is there. It becomes your dream, it becomes your fantasy. If you repress it too much, then it starts coming in different symbols. They may not be sexual on the surface but deep down they are sexual. Sexuality means that sex has entered into the head, but why has sex entered into the head in the first place? It enters into the head if you repress it. Anything repressed enters into the head. Try for three days: go on a fast, and food will enter into the head. For seven days don't take a bath... I am not talking about hippies. If you are a hippy, then this won't do. For seven days don't take a bath, and that will enter in your head. For three, four days don't sleep, and that will enter in your head. And then you will be continuously thinking of sleep, sleep will be continuously coming and you will be yawning. Whatsoever is starved enters into the head. And when something enters into the head your whole being becomes polluted with it. By 'virginity', I mean that Mary must have been in a very very non-sexual state. She must have been a very innocent woman. She must not have been thinking about sex; she must have made love, but that love was innocent. There was no idea in it: mind was not interfering. It was completely uncontaminated by the mind, uninterfered with by the mind. That's what we in Tantra say real love is. You meet a woman, you don't think about sex at all. Only pathological people think about sex, healthy people don't think about sex. There is no need. You enjoy the beauty of the woman -- her face, her eyes, her proportion -- you are simply thrilled by her being. There is no idea to do anything to her, there is no idea to exploit, there is no idea to possess. You are immensely interested, but very innocently. There is no planning in your mind, there is no future, then it is a virgin relationship. One day love can happen. One day listening to music, dancing together, love can possess you both: you can make love to each together. But even while making love, there is no idea -- there is no mind in it. It is innocent of mind, then it is a virgin relationship. If you ask me, then this is what I mean by 'virgin'. Jesus cannot be born in the way Christians say -- that is absurd, stupid. But why do they say that he was born out of a virgin mother? They are too obsessed with sex, and to them it seems degrading that Jesus should come out of sex, out of an ordinary love relationship. That looks very very disturbing to them... and coming through the ordinary passage of sex? No, that is not possible. If Jesus can come through sex, then how will they condemn sex? Then how will they tell their nuns and their monks 'Don't ever go into sex. It is ugly, it is the greatest sin there is!'? (But ) if Jesus himself enters into the world through natural love, it will be difficult to condemn."

He does get confusing for a moment. I think everyone who believes Jesus was born knows that Mary obviously got pregnant (maybe a Roman guard raped her who knows...in those days women would be stoned to death for being raped) But what he is talking about transcends the idea of that story.. Hes saying the story that became the virgin birth story, is different than the story of the real jesus (if there was a man name Jesus). SO What he (i believe) is saying is anyone can become 'that' person, if you transcend the animal instincts, and it happens at different points and events, ages in peoples lives. You awake to the suffering and feel compassion for what happens all around us constantly in the human world

The famous Virgin Birth stems from an early mistranslation of the original text, (for virgin, read young girl). Since the whole point of Christ´s lineage was his descent from David, he had to have an earthly father -- which rather demolishes the idea of parthenogenesis, along with Mr Campbell´s notion that it is any more a metaphor for enlightenment than the weather forecast.

Moyers interrupts Campbell here. Campbell is trying to point out how in myth, there is no consistency as to what birth means or how it is physically done. Moyers is a Christian who understandably is looking to sort of understand if his faith is unique or not. To a certain extent, Christianity IS unique, and Campbell acknowledges this in the same interview, but this is in tangent to his point - that for us to examine the virgin birth we are supposed to get internal and personal meaning from it, not a meaning which is separate from us or aloof. God is inside us in Campbell's view, and indeed in much of the Christian view as well.

I can’t seem to make the connection at all, what does growth and transformation have to do with a virgin birth, seriously? It’s also inherently disrespectful to mature women who have done the work.

A lot of Rabbi's blow a gasket over Mary giving birth to Jesus but they are alright with a virgin red heifer. I think the main problem is being taught in the traditions of their Father's who didn't understand the story in the first place so they wrote their own books based on their beliefs and opinions which led them to where they are today. Just as lost and confused as they've always been too stubborn to admit they need help. They want to believe it's everybody else but them that has mental problems. Personally I couldn't care less what they believe as long as they don't claim it's their right to impose their beliefs and opinions on other people.

I know that we are co-creators and we came from the big bang (God). Mary (Jesus's mother) was raped by a Roman solider and had a hard time with wanting the child. She was told by a angel that she was to go through the nine months of her pregnancy and give birth to Jesus. The catholic church has spread misinformation for years and Jesus said that he was not born in a stable either. He said it was a nice story, but the birth was were they lived. Jesus tried to help people get off the wheel of Karma. This is what we are suppose to be doing now, love each other, stop fearing all the time and manifest your dream life. Its a very simple concept, yet people forget that they are infinite being and we have the power within us, we just don't us it!
