This film really haunts me. First off, I am a big fan of this film - but more than that, it hit home in a way that still makes me very, very sad. A girl who lived across the street from us was living in the "Lisbon world" of super-strict Christian parents who were really old enough to be her grandparents (she was adopted). She was two years older than me, and our families went to the same church, so her parents would let her come visit us when she wasn't perpetually grounded for whatever petty stupid little reason. Her parents actually burned her records too - that exact scene playing out for real, even the part where they got smoked out by the stench. That happened just before her first suicide attempt. Her need to rebel and their need to control eventually landed her in trouble with the law and stints in mental facilities. She attempted suicide a couple of times. She did finally escape their grip at 18, but the damage was done. She was never able to get past all of it, really. She died in her 30's from addiction complications. But the film's depiction of that time period was exactly the time I was becoming a teen with my friend, and so much of the Lisbon parents reminded me of her parents - it was too spot-on, too real. I can't help but think of my friend and what she went through. I can't watch this film without crying for my friend, and I can't not watch this film either. The saddest part tho, to me, is that this type of religious repression is still going on, and the damage it does to the kids is impossible to measure. When parents try too hard to control every single aspect of a teen's life, eventually the teen will run away or commit suicide. They really are left with no options if they want to have any freedom at all. And even after failing as parents, they can't accept that it was their crazy idea of discipline that caused it. Anyway... thank you Sofia, thank you cast, and thanks to the original book for a story that rings so close to my youth.

13:20 wow this is so true, I think this is why I find the film to be so real and true because of the cast. Nowadays it's hard to watch a movie or show with "teenagers" because theyre not teenagers and it's always annoying and unrelatable even if they try to make it relatable, it just feels odd watching it. It doesn't feel natural or real at all and with this film, I felt alive and real. It made me feel like I was in highschool again.

The only movie I have ever watched which actually turned to be more interesting than the book. Impressive how their careers have developed. Particularly Josh Hartnett has become such a versatile actor... I wish everyone could see beyond his looks... He's highly talented and, judging by his acting role choices throughout these years, I would say he really knows what the purpose of a good movie should be: not to make millions, but to tell a unique story...

@UIAL570
@UIAL570 3 жыл бұрын
@@dbongoloid9541 Absolutely agree so glad that you said it. The movie wouldn’t exist without the book. It’s prose, style and aesthetic were from the book itself. Eugenides goes so in depth with everything, and Sofia did such an amazing job of perfecting the intimate, tiny, details other directors just wouldn’t care about but book fans are enamored with and admire. Because the details made the novel. And while I think Dunst is a great actress, it was focused a lot on her when as you said, the novel gives every Lisbon sister her moment in the sun. They are all given their own storylines, personality and lives. It was a bit of an injustice to cut them out. But in fairness, it’s a film, they don’t have the time a book does to give us all the information we need.

As a Canadian of a certain age, what resonated most with me was the soundtrack of Virgin Suicides. Sloan and Heart are both Canadian bands and prominent in the movie. My favorite part of the film is when the boys and the sisters communicate back and forth with Hello It's Me, Alone Again Naturally, Run To Me and poignantly ends with So Far Away. Those were the songs on my turntable as a teenager in the early 70's and wistful memories of my salad days wash over me when I watch that scene.

Leslie Amon looks exactly the same. She was my favorite. The way she was with Cecelia in the movie was so tender and motherly. It reminded me of when my older sister would do my hair and make up when I was little. I am one out of five girls and this movie hit close to home in so many ways. My sisters and I all looked very similar growing up and we were constantly being told that our family had the most beautiful girls. Our moms boss onced remarked (in front of his own two daughters) that there were more pretty girls in our family than any he'd ever seen. Somehow my sisters and I watch The Virgin Suicides the same weekend of my Dad's funeral. The movie stayed with me my entire life because of it. There was something so profound about it since I watched it while grieving. To this day my sisters are texting me and vice versa at any given time bc we stayed incredibly close despite growing up and starting our own families. I wouldn't trade them, or my mom for that matter, for anything.

Young and mature. fully of contradiction typical of teenage, and played nso well by the actors and over all the directors. The screenplay, the colors of the film, dress, everything it's perfect! It has , such an hippie vibe in certain parts. I love the attentions for the reproduction of the 70's era. I love that period,I'm too young, and I could only have my mom pic when she was a young girl in that period, and reminds me of certain things of the movie. overall, I talked too much, but I'm so happy to find this video, and I wanna tanks Sofia, for making this wonderful unforgettable and unique movie. I know I've been fangirling over this flick, talking too much, but I want to add this: I love that AJ mentioned Matthew Gray Gubler, and his fangirling attitude about the film. I have been a fan of his for a long time, and he has much the same ability to embrace a character, make it his own, and make it believable-- which is why I love his work-- and this is the same for all of these actors involved in the film, including James Woods, Kathleen Turner, and the others in the cast. That is why I feel this is an all-star cast-- flying under the radar, so to speak-- because they all embrace their craft in much the same way. They take the character they play and make it immensely believable and real, and human. That, my friends, is what the best actors do. And there are a lot of them in the history of filmmaking. It isn't so much the storyline of the novel (and we all know we prejudge a movie after reading the novel, lol) ....it's more what the cast do to bring it to life. THAT is what makes a good film. (Side note-- for myself, this is why I e always loved James Stewart movies, and Cary Grant flicks, and a whole host of others in cinematic history-- they make me believe. Really, that's what it is all about, in the end. ❤️😊🎬🎥

I wonder if Ashton Kutcher developed his character of Michael Kelso ("That 70s Show") somewhat from the character of Tripp? Some of the mannerisms, and the look, but added his own spin with Kelso's oblivious, somewhat nerdy, trying-too-hard cool dude personality..... Anyway, I've always loved Josh's acting and roles, not diminishing your creativity sir!

Josh and Kirsten would have been so good married together. Their offscreen chemistry is super cute. Crazy how their lives went their own paths.
