I just "discovered" the Virginian recently and I am currently on season 8. I love this series and it saddens me when I read that Trampas passed away so young and last year James Drury. Thank you both for the great times.

Doug McClure must have spent half his adult life on the Virginian (9 years) & The Men From Shiloh (9 years). Men Of Shiloh is now available for viewing on Free vee. I wasn't even aware of this series until today. I just watched one with Greer Garson & James Whitmore in it from 1970 (Season 9 Episode 8) that was pretty good. Well written, which would explain how it lasted 9 seasons. James Drury and Lee Majors must have left the show by then. But I HATE that the Virginian & "Men of Shiloh" both are listed on Comcast/Xfinity without a list of the guest stars and their bio's being made available to viewers interested in watching. The guest stars on old westerns, to a large extent, determine whether I am going to have any interest in watching the episode. It really annoys me that this information is available for other westerns but it is not readily available for these 2 shows on Comcast. WRZ 2023-03-06

We used to wait for this to watch on Friday night, Friday is the weekend in Syria. I was 13 then. I learned many words in English from the show. I used to record it and watch it again with the subtitles coverd with a black paper so to test myself . This was in in 1977 and the after until I actually came to the United States in 1983. What a great show that was.

Facts about Doug McClure, he didn't play Steve Hill, he played Trampas for NINE years. The movie clip is NOT from At The Earth's Core, but The Land That Time Forgot (1974). Jeanette Nolan should have been mentioned with her husband John McIntire and Clu Gulager and others should have been included. I have met 10 of the cast and Doug's family at his induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers.

I remember this as a young child in the late 60's and early 70's on TV, it was one of my favourite TV western series along with 'The High Chapparal'. Yes, Doug McClure played Trampas I remember - he died relatively young around the age of about 60 in the mid 1990s's I seem to remember.

The entire series can be seen for free on IMDB in blu-ray quality, if you can stand all of the ads. In the higher resolution, it looks less real. LOL. It was filmed on the Universal backlot, and the men's clothing looks like it could have been bought at JC Penney's. That doesn't take away from the show and you couldn't see any of that on the black and white TV's we all had in the 60's.
@scvandy3129
@scvandy3129 3 жыл бұрын
(continuing) 5:44 - 6:50 "Doug McClure as 'Steve Hill'" WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. The "Facts Verse" editors obviously aren't paying attention to what they're assembling. In the two preceding tributes we've SEEN and HEARD Roberta Shore's Betsy and Gary Clarke's Steve address Doug McClure's "Virginian" character as 'Trampas.' That's right, 'TRAMPAS' -- nearly 'idiot proof.' Uh uh. Because here, for seemingly an eternity, McClure -- ONE of the ONLY two regulars, the other being The Virginian himself, James Drury, who survived being a regular ALL NINE YEARS (through "The Men from Shiloh" aka "The Virginian" year nine) is ID'd as 'Steve Hill' -- the VERY SAME ROLE we just saw Clarke assigned to in his 65 seconds of fame, 4:36 - 5: 41. Let's see; call this fiasco 'stupid and sloppy' or 'sloppy and stupid'? One thing's certain: were McClure's close friend Drury still with us (i.e., alive) and saw this slight he would ream "Facts Verse" a new one. And call these nine minutes an amateur house production and assault on the memory and integrity of his iconic series. Drury, who was known to have a temper, would call out "WHERE is Medicine Bow's Deputy Riker, effectively played by Clu Gulager? He was an integral part of the show, the necessary figure enforcing the law, a friend to those at Shiloh. And off screen, quite 'a hit with the ladies in the audience;' even giving Doug and myself 'a run for our money' in the fan mail department. Dammit all, where's the overlooked 'Jennifer,' Diane Roter's role that filled the gap between the Garths (seasons one through four) and the Graingers (five through eight)? You've caused me to be 'mad as a hornet' 'cause I don't see Riker's boss, Sheriff Mark Abbott -- essayed by Ross Elliott for 60 of our 225 'Virginian' episodes. You messed up again -- and again -- by not acknowledging two young Shiloh hands, 'David Sutton' (David Hartman) and 'Jim Horn' (Tim Matheson) who joined us for years seven and eight, respectively. " . . . As 'SC Vandy' -- one of our most dedicated fans -- has pointed out for you, not mentioning Elizabeth and her lovely alter ego Sara Lane is a significant blunder. You see, having a female presence at the ranch, I always said, set us apart from 'Laramie,' 'Bonanza' and other ranch-based shows. And she wasn't just window dressing; when everyone was called away on a round-up or drive, Mr. Grainger and I knew we could leave Shiloh in the care of Elizabeth, mature for her age, and Belden (L.Q. Jones), a top hand you're surely familiar with. One we could count on for a few laughs, too. . . . Would it have killed you to show an establishing shot of the ranch; you know, our HOME all those years? Our buildings -- main house, bunk house, barn, shed all had four walls and were situated in the immense-appearing, hilly terrain not far from the 'wilderness' portion of Universal Studios' peerless backlot. Oh, and we had our own town Medicine Bow, Wyoming Territory, AND a working steam train -- the biggest 'prop' that really set us apart from most other westerns -- town and train both on the versatile, photogenic Denver Street set. 'Facts Verse,' could you not have spent a scant 10 to 12 seconds offering representative views of those? Of course you could. "We were proud that our practical, adaptable 'working,' ranch exteriors set us apart from our brethren, the Cartwrights on 'Bonanza,' Barkleys on 'The Big Valley' and Lancers on 'Lancer' whose edifices were on on sound stages for the most part -- and looked it. "Now I'll pass the baton back to 'SC Vandy' so he can close by disgracing you further re the sloppiness surrounding the Garth section; Judge Garth, you know the one who built Shiloh, and then selling it to John Grainger so he could transition to territorial governor, a role tailor-made for his counterpart, Lee J. Cobb. And as I said time and again on the DVD bonus tracks, on the strength of Lee J. Cobb's name, we never had to do a pilot." 6:49 - 6:56 Following this brief view of Lee J. Cobb's Judge Garth via two good publicity photos, including one highlighting Garth's capacity as loving parent to 15-year old Betsy, 6:56 - 7:04 we're bored to tears with embarrassingly, not-representative, episode-imagery of Judge Garth looking totally out of place riding the 'shotgun' position on a moving stagecoach obviously standing still on the cheapest looking mock-up on an OBVIOUS soundstage setting. Then precious seconds of his tribute wasted by taking a look into the coach's interior and the passengers, through 7:04. BORING. Out of character, almost. And, non sensible. Out of the more than 100 episodes in which Cobb / 'Garth' appears THIS is the best "Facts and Verse" can do? NO it isn't; of course not. Those responsible for his segment either didn't fully comprehend the show and Cobb's / 'Garth''s role in it OR shamefully remained lazy and grabbed the first clip that popped up. INSTEAD why not show him in his capacity as owner of one of Wyoming Territory's biggest spreads, Shiloh, by appearing THERE -- on horesback or standing or positioned to drive a buggy. And what viewers saw him do so many times, talking to guest stars and the foreman / Virginian, and dedicated hands, Trampas, Steve, Randy, Beldon, Harper; and clearly shown in his spacious, law-books-filled office too. Separately with Shore / 'Betsy' displaying their warm relationship. 7:30 - 7:45 'Out of left field' pops up a film clip from the landmark ensemble effort, "12 Angry Men" (1957), showing Cobb. Most assuredly those 15 seconds could be better put to use showing better more appropriate "Virginian" footage or any number of the neglected, overlooked regulars specified above. 9:03 - 9:12 Just throwing up any end titles whose credits have no relation to the previous nine minutes of specific "Virginian" talent is NOT the best way to end this. But speaking of end, with all the disappointments and blunders viewers experienced throughout a smidgen of nice 'touches' that don't embarrass "Facts and Verse" and infuriate "Virginian" devotees, the sensation, "thank goodness, 'the end'" dominates. 0:15 - 9:03 THAT music. It's repetitive, loud, repetitive -- and its metallic and electronic sound doesn't 'match' the traditional, polished, gutsy sense of this beloved, ambitious (90 minutes each week!), well-crafted, famous TV western. Many "Virginian" fans will recognize my close as it was regularly shared with the public by the late James Drury upon his extremely popular personal appearances -- a significant number with fellow castmates whose alter egos, like his, populated Medicine Bow and Shiloh Ranch -- and on his website. "The Cowboy Way" If it's not true . . . don't say it. If it's not yours . . . don't take it And if it's not right . . . don't do it. James Drury "The Virginian" Now, tweaking it to: "The KZbin Way" If it's not true . . . don't say / print it. . . . . . . . . . . If it's not right . . . don't post it. (with thanks to James Drury, "The Virginian") Following those edicts "Facts Verse" should 86 this mess and start over so it can de done accurately and professionally then posted correctly. "Why should we?" asks "Facts Verse." In addition to not having egg on your faces, fans of "The Virginian" and casual observers will appreciate the accuracy and the professionalism, SO MUCH SO that they'll be inclined to check out some other presentations by "Facts Verse." As it stands, they're inclined to ask of themselves "Watch another 'Facts Verse'? Not a chance; even if it's about my favorite show; ESPECIALLY because it's about my favorite show.

0:00 - 0:03 Ah**, "Facts Verse" opens its study of "The Virginian" with a magnificent video clip of the (young) Lady of Shiloh for seasons 5 thru 8, equestrian extraordinaire and Universal contract player, Sara Lane, in the guise of a smiling, pretty Elizabeth Grainger, galloping her steed towards camera truck; and NEVER to be seen again, except UNIDENTIFIED still photos, much less the promised commented-on or profiled treatment, i.e. ". . . we're looking at 'The Virginian' cast then and now to see how they changed . . . " What gives?! (ed. - 'what gives?!' is a preferred, mixed-company way of screaming "WTF?!") Get ready; you're going to be expressing that MANY times while encountering the seemingly, never-ending mistakes, oversights, omissions, blunders, 'bad calls' et al. liberally spread throughout "'The Virginian' Cast Then and Now (2021). **Nine times out of ten, beginning correspondence with "ah" indicates 'trouble ahead.' 1:20 - 1:25 Our introduction to John McIntire, who played Shiloh Ranch's owner Clay Grainger, brother to its previous occupant, John Grainger, played by Hollywood old-timer (back to the post silent era, dawn of talkies) Charles Bickford -- another with profile MIA. John is great uncle to neglected Elizabeth, mentioned above, and HER older brother, Stacy, played by Don Quine, who later does get an intro from "Facts Verse;" and finally husband to Holly Grainger, played by veteran character actress Jeanette Nolan, wife to McIntire and pictured here yet who's shamefully 'blown off' throughout. FYI, John and Jeanette are parents to Tim and Holly McIntire -- both thespians busy in the 1960s and '70s, especially Tim, via multiple TV appearances, including "The Virginian," Holly once, Tim four times . "Facts Verse" would have its audience, its AMAZINGLY forgiving audience, believe that the b&w single of McIntire on the right is of him in his Clay Grainger get-up. Uh-uh. No, it's from five years earlier when he was Chris Hale, wagon master on the monster hit "Wagon Train" (number one series via Nielsen Ratings, 1961- 62 season). Notice Grainger doesn't wear a vest and his hat is noticeably different. Because of the Top Ten status of "Wagon Train" both veteran viewers from the early 1960s and newcomers via cable / satellite endless repeats recognize the wardrobe instinctively as being that of Chris Hale; and NOT Clay Grainger's. Put simply, Hale is dressed like a wagon train leader spending six months traversing the remote west; Grainger is attired like a successful ranch owner, but not desk bound. While in his 60s, Grainger is full-well capable of doing the rugged cattle and horse work when necessary. And with the Virginian in charge of the ranch hands, that's not often. 1:27 - 1:40 Umpteenth oversight / error / goof: So here we have a representative "Virginian" clip of John McIntire on the exterior Shiloh Ranch set performing as Clay Grainger -- opposite two other regulars NEITHER of whom are noted. The aforementioned Jeanette Nolan; then, in the buggy's rear is Tim Matheson aka Jim Horn, Shiloh ranch hand brought in for the eighth season, essentially filling in for the departed David Hartman, who played David Sutton, a new-to-the-west ranch hand from Philadelphia who called the Shiloh bunkhouse 'home' in year 7. Jim Horn was considerably more accustomed to horses and guns and working cattle than was Sutton; and had more success with the opposite sex. Re working cattle and knowing his way around a horse, Sutton did indeed, 'give it his all.' Seated aside Ms. Nolan is well-known performer, Leslie Nielsen, guest starring in the eighth season premiere, 'The Long Ride Home,' one of the highest rated episodes, 8.5 out of 10 tops, as voted on by "The Virginian" viewers on IMDB. Further along, at 5:59 - 6:02, Matheson pops up again, uncredited again, in one of the oh-so-familiar, bunkhouse interior scenes of the series. 1:43 - 1:50 Incorrect year posted with incorrect photo. Repeating: John McIntire's wagon master Chris Hale episodic-type, b&w portrait from "Wagon Train" -- 1962, not 1966 erroneously reappears here, supposedly Clay Grainger. And even THAT is wrong -- McIntire's run on "The Virginian" didn't commence until November 1967. 1:51 - 2:23 Asking of "Facts Verse" rhetorically: From Tom Hanks' 1989 comedy-drama feature, "Turner and Hootch," you pulled this great CHARACTER-STUDY portrait of John McIntire as THE representative picture of him in his final days, 1991? WHAT could be more unforgiving than this disgusting image of a human specimen? If you tried really, really hard you could not have presented a more repulsive photo -- and for that the "Turner and Hootch" make-up department geniuses 'thank you.' Peers, family, friends are appalled, however. 2:25 - 2:32 Now it's Don Quine's turn, introduced here and ID'd as Shiloh ranch house resident Stacy Grainger in two cast shots; with his family in a Grainger family portrait that shows his granddad John Grainger, owner of Shiloh for seasons five and six, played by veteran film star Charles Bickford and 17-year old sister Elizabeth played by Sara Lane -- from 1966. BOTH relatives are excluded from coverage in "'The Virginian' Cast Then and Now." 'Hmm.' On the right, also from 1966, we observe a single of Quine mounted on his alter-ego Stacy's horse. Nice smile. 2:34 - 2:37 Ah, the Grainger family shot reappears though now dominating the screen. A perfect time to AT LEAST type the names 'Charles Bickford' and 'Sara Lane' next to 'Don Quine' at its bottom. Alas -- nothing. Charles Bickford, 75, with his full head of white hair that he wears swept up from the back and ears, was a better horseman that predecessor Lee J. Cobb 'Judge Garth.' And there's Ms. Lane, neck-and-neck with McClure, as the show's best rider. While Roberta Shore, an admitted failure at horseback riding, had her followers, it's clear that Ms. Lane was prettier and definitely had a fuller, more flattering figure. "Those lips, those eyes, that hair, THAT chest; but I digress." Ms. Lane did a year and 25 episodes more than Ms. Shore's three seasons, so "Facts Verse"'s inexcusable inclusion of only ONE of the four women of Shiloh (ed. - misogynistic much?) -- Ms. Shore, Diane Roter, Jeanette Nolan and Sara Lane -- from a duration on screen time consideration, Ms. Lane obviously deserved the call. . . . Ah, 'Libby,' as Granddad Grainger would lovingly address Elizabeth. Near everyone else called her Elizabeth or Liz. The latter was Trampas' preferred name for her, just like he called Stacy 'Stace.' 2:41 - 2:45 The Grainger siblings, Stacy (Don Quine) and Elizabeth (Sara Lane) with only Quine noted in text. "Not right; not bright" -- as far as this exercise goes. 2:45 - 2:47 Speaking of not smart, "Facts Verse" has just presented FOUR successive 'Stacy' / Don Quine images with the corresponding, correct ID at bottom left of frame, then BLOWS IT AGAIN with this episodic shot, credited it as a view of Stacy, BUT MOST CLEARLY NOT. I.e., that is NOT Don Quine, but rather a co-star in one episode. . . . Wait now; a major CLUNKER, a BOMB of INEPTNESS is forthcoming at 5:44 - 6:50 . . . . (to be continued)
