1st place: Gunsmoke 20 years 2nd place: Tie Bonanza 14 years, Death Valley Days 14 years 3rd place: Virginian 9 years 4th place: Tie; Wagon Train 8 years and Rawhide 8 years 5th place: Cheyenne 7 years (although most were 13 episodes) 6th place: Have Gun will Travel 6 years 7th place (possibly) Lone Ranger 5 years. After that are numerous 4 season Westerns. Note; I could also be wrong, this is just my personal Collection. I don't know how many years Cisco Kid ran, for example, as I only have Collections.

When I was growing up in the 50's & 60's my Mom made us go to bed at 8PM every night.Later, as a teen, we could stay up til 10 on the weekends only. For this reason I never saw many of the TV shows that were prime time. So now I watch them on GRIT or INSP & it's all new to me. My husband says watching TV with me gives him saddle sores.

Same here, Ginger, I was either in school or working so I rarely watched TV at night. But I've been watching westerns now for years, they are one of the few honest serials on TV! I have INSP on all the time, and two other western channels I watch also from time to time, among my science, history and nature programs. Twilight just started on one of the channels I watch and I never saw that either except for a half-dozen times, so I'll watch that also.

Virginian ran for 9 years, but Bonanza ran for 14 years and Gunsmoke ran for 20 years. In 4th place is an official tie; Wagon Train and Rawhide both ran for 8 seasons, 5th place is Cheyenne with 7 seasons (most were short seasons), and in 6th place was Have Gun Will Travel with 6 seasons. Lone Ranger ran for 5 seasons, and is 7th place I believe. But I can't swear to it.

Death valley days was not originally intentionally added, because it was an Anthology series with a new variety ensemble of casts of characters every single week. The main others were strongly purposely character driven and showcased series, which made most of the leading and supporting actors stars, rich, and famous.

The Men From Shiloh was not a TV movie but a re-vamping of the series with more facial hair, bigger hats and an Ennio Morricone theme. It added Lee Majors to the cast and only ran one season. You can also not forget to include Doug McClure's Trampas as a factor in the shows success.

The Virginian longest running at the time? Gunsmoke made its debut in 1955. Bonanza in 1959. Now maybe The Virginian was at some point was considered a long running western being that each episode was 90 minutes. 9 Seasons. Gunsmoke 20 and Bonanza 14. I always thought James got along with all his costars. Surprised he had issues Katherine Crawford.

As far as I know Jim, whom I knew from first meeting him in 2008, never wrote an autobiography, or had a biography written about him, he was a very private man. One co-star he didn't like was Stewart Granger in the last season. "He sunk the show" Jim said in a panel discussion in Memphis. "Facts" are lacking in this video.

If you watch Jim's 1971 interview in Finland, you will see that he was very popular. You will also see that he spoke his mind challenging the messages of the films "Easy Rider" and "Midnight Cowboy." Lastly, he mentioned that prior to his appearance that he recorded a pilot for a nationally syndicated radio program. With his popularity, he would have had a much larger impact than Rush Limbaugh. It is a real shame that he was "canceled" then, like they are retaliating and "canceling" now. P.S. Katherine Crawford was the daughter of Communist Roy Higgins. She married Frank Price, an Executive Producer of "The Virginian" after Roy Higgins left.
