Experience 19th century daily life in North Africa, the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East through the legendary Najd Collection. One of the greatest collections of Orientalist paintings in existence, the cinematic canvases are precious records of the region’s history, as depicted by artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ludwig Deutsch, Gustav Bauernfeind and Osman Hamdy Bey. Sotheby’s will offer 40 works from the collection in a dedicated auction (22 October | London) and all 155 paintings in the collection will be on view in a never-before-seen exhibition from 11 - 15 October.

Incredible work. Treasured historical snapshots of a bygone time of the Middle East. Their rendering of light is luminous, lusciously golden and culturally rich. I’m in awe.

It’s western paintings about easterns not Arabs and it’s not real it’s fictional paintings. the westerns could build a civilisation like this instead of paintings

1:48 It is not necessary that they be synchronous. Maybe the last two came late and missed a part of the prayer but what the guy standing upfront is doing isn't a part of the prayer and them praying in three rows when there is space in the second row is wrong.

Wasn’t that long ago this stuff was considered hopeless kitsch.

I don't think it's necessarily kitsch, and not with a price tag of roughly 2 to 5 million pounds.

I would assume that's why the speaker says this is one of the "last opportunities to secure the very best of orientalist art" - few people care enough to collect it anymore

Osman Hamdi (not Hamdy) Bey was NOT from Egypt. He was Turkish and was born in Istanbul, was an archaeologist and painter. He also studied in the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was trained by French painters Léon Gérôme and Gustave Boulanger. Also his paintings were fictional, it's not like he went to those places and painted people. Painting was strictly forbidden in those areas of Middle East.

The reference to Najd is inaccurate , the art depicts other areas in the Arab world.

Najd is usually central saudi arabia, but it can also mean high place, or iraq and the north.
