16:54...After having replaced a few fiber timing gears at the Volvo dealership I worked at in the '70's. When building my 1800s engine I used the steel gear set from Volvo Penta.

The lifters on my b20 were all worn unevenly as was my camshaft. I couldn’t figure it out why my 70k mile engine was running so poorly, until I measured the valve lift and determined the cam to be the issue. Now my 142 is getting a b230 me m47. Really enjoy the videos in English! Cheers!
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Hey Sam! Did you look at the base of the lifters? Did they all rotate in their bores? I know of a few cases where the lifters, due to oil crud or scratches in the bore, have not rotated - which in turn led to the lifter wearing out in a hurry. Or was the cam of poor quality? BTW - I too have had a 142 with B230 and M47! Great daily driver!

Good basic construction. Will you check the camshaft lift timing so the valves open at the correct moment? B20 cam gears are known to be up to 10 degrees out of alignment, especially phenolic gears.
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Hey Ian! In this case, I relied on the cam grinder, they check the core before grinding, then I compared a few gears to make sure I pick a good one. I do have an adjustable cam gear in my rally engine, as a matter of fact!

Otroligt pedagogiskt och väl genomfört. Gillar verkligen din "attention to details". Hade jag inte redan alldeles för många intressen så skulle jag göra en bil/motorrenovering, så inspirerad blir jag. En B30 skulle väl innebära samma moment, bara att det är två cylindrar till?
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Tack Anders!!

@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Tjena Sunkan!

Very much enjoying your build. I’m restoring my ‘64 1800S which has sat in the garage for 25 years. It’s been sitting waiting for a transmission rebuild while other things in life have taken priority. Shortly before that the B18B was replaced with a factory spare B20B and has less then 10,000km on it. When I stripped the car there had been nothing that was seized, antifreeze was fresh looking, oil was golden, brakes were the only significant issue, mainly because the drums and rotors were all at minimum spec. Before disassembly compression was good 125/130psi, cylinders show no wear, in fact they still show the factory honing. I’ve had the head tested and new valves, liners, seals and springs installed. My question, I’d rather leave the bottom end untouched, do you have any suggestions as to making sure it’s well lubricated, should I drive the oil pump with a cordless drill to circulate oil as a first step before starting? I’ve removed the cam and used assembly lube on it as well as the lifters and rockers Sorry if that was a little long winded!
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
JG! First off - congratulations on what surely seems to be a great find! What state are you in? I've worked on cars imported from Kansas, Colorado and California - all have been near mint in terms of bodywork, and no rusted nuts etc. So, as for your question: Yes, that's seems like the way to do it. If you engage the oil pump, take the valve cover off and run it until you see oil coming out by the rockers - then you know the entire engine is lubricated. On the other hand: I started using/abusing Volvo B18/B20 when I was 14. Not knowing any better, I started engines that had been sitting for 10 years or more, just by hooking up a battery and pouring gas down the carb. Never an issue. They are bloody hard to kill! Anyhow, I you feel like it - I'd love to see some pics of your project!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to link any photos, seems the KZbin algorithm deleted the message which included it. I’m in Vancouver so needless to say the body is not without the effects of cold wet winters and warm wet summers, although if the last two are an indication, climate change could affect all of that and Vancouver will be the new LA. While LA and surroundings will become a training ground for life in mars. But thanks for the tips on what to look for when I get oil flowing, is there a speed I should or maybe shouldn’t rotate the oil pump drive?

What for a camshaft is that? Are they already available to buy? Sorry but I didn't understand the brand when you said it in the Video. Did you check the gap of all Piston Rings? What's the brand of the Rod bearings? Also KS? Greetings from Germany. Looking forward for the next Video.
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Hello! The camshaft is an NH48, 275 degrees duration, 7.75 millimeter lift, 107 degrees lobe separation. They can be bought from a company here in Sweden. Easiest if you have a original core yourself, and it needs to be a "074" casting. If not, you will have to pay a bit more! Piston ring gaps: just checked them, never had any problem with genuine Mahle pistons and rings!

7.75 mm lift seems like very little, is it 7.75 at the pushrod/lifter or at the valve? Sorry if this is a stupid question. @@ClassicCarRacingRestoration

Why use WD40 instead of motor oil, I don't understand?
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration
@ClassicCarRacingRestoration Жыл бұрын
Hello! Since it gives low friction when sliding the piston in, and also evaporates before first start up. Motor oil works just fine too, but then you're likely to get a bit off smoke at first start, if the oil is still present in the cylinders.
