Glad you enjoyed it! The Witch, for me, was everything I wanted The Village to be, hah. Small fact: the dialect isn't Old English. Old English is actually heavily Germanic, and died out in about 1100. It's early modern English that they're speaking! It just seems like Old English to us because we're so removed from how early modern English speakers spoke.

"The Witch" is probably my favorite supernatural horror movie-so brilliant, so creepy, so amazing. I love the folklore of witches in Salem, the slow build up was incredible, the cinematography, the director just nailed everything. :)
@Hopkins05059 жыл бұрын
The Witch is easily one of the best horror movies to be released in the past couple years. Masterful cinematography. Incredible sound design Acting was top notch, even from the children. (Which was a pleasant surprise) I feel like a lot of people felt is was "boring" or "slow", as the general public is used to watching car chases and explosions galore. The only complaint I have with the film are the 3 jump scares, as I think we all know, are used to get a cheap scare. They felt VERY out of place, when the film seemed like it was trying to make you feel creeped out, and unsettled, as opposed to making you flinch. The main issue with the film wasn't the film at all, it was the marketing. This is not a film about a "scary thing", it's a film about how the "scary thing" affects our characters. Showing how extreme stress can make family turn on each other, and reach for any semblance of hope, be it believing a dead character to be alive, or to cast out everything you've been taught, just to survive. 8/10

Great review! I actually saw it last week when it came out and I really enjoyed it. Like you said, not what I was expecting and the soundtrack was probably one of my favorite things about it because it made it so much more creepy and uncomfortable at times because it was really good at putting you on edge. After seeing it my husband and I spent a lot of time talking about it and what we thought about it, which I think shows how good of a movie it was. Sad to hear your theater didn't have a lot of people in it, mine was about 3/4 full. I look forward to your next review!

I hate the ending bc like we NEVER see what happened to the baby boy, what was Satan all doing, where the other Witches were doing, etc Also disappointed the Mother was so hysterical about everything, and we also didn’t get to see how the other villagers were doing, like did they absolutely not care about these people? What about other folks who don’t live in town? Where are they?

I think the movie was beautiful. Some of the scenes took awhile to continue to the next. I really like how they did use actual diaries and made a movie where it was a real kind of story. I've read books about witchcraft back then and they got it on point. Overall great movie of the year so far. Hope there will be more to see.

I saw it in a packed theater on the Friday it came out! But I live in an area where everyone is an aspiring film director or actor, so they just flock to movies that have high ratings from critics! It's still selling out here til this day! btw, I live in Boston

I found the older dialect to be easy to understand... but that may be bc my English teacher in HighSchool gave us a few lessons on actual Old English. Like Old English is basically another Language, not an accent or dialect of modern English. Middle English isn’t as hard but is also like another language imo.

I want to see it :) I think maybe there weren't so many people there in your theater is because of marketing, or lack of. Out of all the movies and shows I watch, I only ever saw one trailer for it and that was in like November.

You had a way better experience then my group did. We went on the opening night and I had annoying teenagers laughing the whole time. while a man behind me made eating popcorn sound like he was eating gravel. Otherwise I enjoyed it and thought it was very different and disturbing. I also liked how what happened to each character was directly related to them *spoilers* (the boy getting seduced and dying from that, the mom dying by the daughter she turned against, the father dying by the woodblocks, etc) so good movie in my opinion. :)

this was a beautiful movie. and disturbing. I didn't know who to believe. I just wish they delved more into the witch's storyline. Man, I was really hoping this movie would be enjoyable. I watched your review and thought that the movie would be overwhelmingly good, so I went a few hours ago to see it with my boyfriend, and we really didnt enjoy it. I feel as an analytical movie its really good. the soundtrack and shots are amazing (youre right about it being very artsy), but its not one youd wanna see with a friend if youre looking to be scared. It definitely was artistic, but it was SO SLOW. I know thats a huge complaint with it already, but people are trying to defend the movie by saying "well its SUPPOSED to be slow. horror fans/the common people dont understand psychological horror" and its like really??? like im sure if i felt fear on any level (especially psychological) id notice, but the director just dragged out scenes unnecessarily, to the point where whatever idea they were trying to convey is just lost. the ending was ridiculous too, why did she join them???? they caused all the shit

I actually really disliked the movie. I thought it took forever to get anything really started (besides the first witchy scene with Samuel, because it took ages afterward for things to happen again). I didn't find it all the scary or disturbing besides the Samuel scene. I went to go see it with my friend, and he didn't really like it either. It was more them just doing constant chores, which is fine and all, but it made the movie seem super long.

I'm English & found it difficult to follow ye olde English. The dialect is northern English, where I'm from. You guys think England & automatically think London. That's south. Northerners tend to talk like the Starks in Game of Thrones. Interesting film. To sum up: goat made them do it

I thoroughly am grateful for people like you. There are films that I don't like, or I guess that aren't for me, but I appreciate the movie for what it is, and most people don't understand that, just because you don't like a movie, it doesn't make the movie a "bad movie" it just isn't for them. For you to appreciate something you don't care for, demonstrates to me that you have a huge understanding of the way a lot of things work...I just wish there were more people who thought that way in the world.
