One of the quickest and easiest ways to check weld undercut is with a W.T.P.S. Gauge from GAL Gage company. This gauge comes with a precision ground calibration block.
A type of weld defect often encountered is undercut that is created when weld transfers primary stress in the part and creates an undercut. To measure this weld defect the Weld Transfers Primary Stress or W.T.P.S. Undercut Gauge is used.
To measure undercut, place the gauge on the surface of the member next to the undercut area. Insert the .010" tip into the undercut. With the aid of illumination, determine if light can be seen between the parallel surfaces of the gauge and the base material. If light can be seen between the two parallel surfaces of the gauge and the base surface, the area is acceptable. If no light can be seen, the undercut area is more than .010" and is re-jectable.
The W.T.P.S. Gauge Kit includes a precision calibration block for periodic calibration. The tip of the W.T.P.S. Gauge and the precision ground step in the calibration block has been machined to .010" of an inch. Place the gauge on the calibration block and the tip of the gauge should just touch the ground surface of the calibration block.
This W.T.P.S. Gauge is available individually from G.A.L. Gage Company or it is included in our complete set of gauges available in our Brief Case Type Large Tool Kit.
