Hayup Gareth those entrance sones either side of the chapel door looked very ornamental an also like they’ve been turned on their side? On the subject of road traffic years ago I’d be cycling back from Bournemouth heading towards Salisbury after a night on the tiles, an I’d take refuge in an old wooden bus stop with a proper bench seat kinda half way home especially if it was lashing it down, at two or three in the morning they’d be minimal traffic then the post came off the Railways an on to the road an you’d get lorries an big vans every 20 minutes! so no chance of any kip, I’d just get up an cycle on the backroads it was a most noticeable change.makes you wonder how much could be put back on the tracks?! Cheers

@@IckeWalks yes an all done on cycles dating from 1900 to about 1950, a few I still have the best riding being a 1939 Sunbeam X RAF iblsey an Stony Cross high geared for Aerodrome use, the need to cycle arose outa last bus was 10.45 which I kept missing for various reasons an sleeping on the beach cliffs or random rooftops ok in fine weather, not so in other, so I took to the 30 plus mile cycle, every Friday an Saturday night, for years, rather like your Walks it’s amazing how much you can do if you stick at it and are driven it became easy I knew every divit in the road, that was the hard part the monotony you gotta alter the route, hour an a half there 2 an a quarter back even did it with a girl on the handlebars which entered in to folk law amongst those I knew, most of it done without lights that saved my life more than once! the trek stopped actually 8 miles shy of Salisbury but still a jaunt, after midnight.if only the trains had been still on could have caught the night mail.! I’ve hardly cycled for ten ish years it’s a shocker getting steadily back in to it, gotta be done though. Keep on Walking an Cyling it’s a great thing your doing kept us going last winter especially the wet feet welly’s this year? or them rubber ankle boots err there a bit granny aren’t they high time they became cool again perhaps. Nice one Gareth , I visited here one evening in the summer, one of those few days that yellow thing was in the sky 😅 In a way it's good that not many people know of this site, apart from the motorway, which by the way, isn't always that noisy at night lol The house was last owned by a local GP who sadly was the victim of an assault in his house by some burglars, the downside of living in a house in an isolated area. The road originally went to Palterton , a village atop the hill near Bolsover, but the M1 dissected it. Fun fact, one of the "Roly Poly" dancers used to own that house too 😂 I didn't realise what is left of the church was just a part of the entrance... did think it's a bloody small congregation 😂
@IckeWalks2 ай бұрын
@leegreveson I didn't know it was there either! It was Google maps that sparked the interest as I noticed some buildings. Awful about the GP. Some nasty people about.
@leegreveson2 ай бұрын
Revisited this yesterday, I don't think this ever was a larger church, the far wall was a window wall and either side doesn't show any sign of a doorway. I think this was always just a mortuary chapel as part of the cemetery. Probably needs further research. Suspect that house was also built before the motorway, not a pleasant place to live as the motorway noise in the daytime is horrendous 😮
