Andrew Lincoln (Rick) originally was planning on leaving the show around season 8. There were three options on how Rick could have left the show; A Rick actually could have been killed off in the season 8 finale and bleed to death on the tree where he slashed Negan's throat B Rick was going to be seriously injured and taken away in Helicopter by Jadis like what happened in season 9 C Rick being taken away in helicopter by Jadis in season 9 which we got Andrew Lincoln thought 8 was a good number to have his finale season but changed his during 2017 Comic-Con Andrew change his mind because he wasn't mentally prepared nor was the other cast members so he called his wife and said I feel overwhelmed. I don’t think I’m ready. I can’t do it. I’ve got Norman, I’ve got Danai, I’ve got Jeffrey, I’ve got Melissa McBride, I’ve got Greg Nicotero - all these beautiful friends of mine and I don’t know if I can do it yet. I don’t know if it’s time.’” he defo was planning on leaving the show at some point but he was just postponing the inevitable. according to Tom Payne (Jesus) killing off Carl greatly increased Andrew's motivation to leave the show.

I always felt them screwing over Chandler Riggs motivated Andrew Lincoln to get out. We heard the stories how they blindsided Chandler and I believe Andrew was considering bowing out and that helped his decision. Miss Rick and Carl so much on the show, still love it but it's not the same without them both.

@@BenRai2k Andy was originally planning on leaving in s8, but instead left in 9.... how would Carl dying motivate him to get out sooner???? He actually stayed longer than originally intended. Carls death was the springboard for Andy's exit in the first place. They had 3 separate endings for Ricks story on the show, and it just so happened around the time of the decision to kill off Carl happened, so was the decision for Rick to exit in s9 blowing up the bridge. I dont find it just a coincidence those two happened around the same time. Whether or not you think that was the right decision is a whole different story. But Im just saying, the whole bridge arc was all because of Rick honoring Carl's wishes. I've always felt that Carl died BECAUSE of Andy's decision to leave. They felt the best way for Rick to exit was for him to fight for the bridge that he built in honor of his son. Rick fighting for that bridge without Carl dying would've been silly.

@@Piggeh603 Carl’s death was just for shock value in s8 as ricks exit wasn’t fully planned yet. But for season 9 with what you’ve said Carl dying gave them the perfect exit plan for Rick.

​@@bl5533 I guess the overall point I'm making is, if Andy doesn't leave, I genuinely don't think Carl ever dies. Whether he left at the bridge, or under the tree, or died under the tree, all 3 of those possible Rick endings all center around him sparing Negan and or building the bridge, honoring Carl's wishes. They knew when they killed Carl, that one of those three exits were gonna be the options for Rick's exit, and I don't see the same impact a Rick exit would have without Carl dying.

Loved their reaction. Molly's was all over the place. Courtney on the other hand was not showing a full blown reaction til Rick's son stepped on the scene lol. But great reaction to the talking walkers. I remember how crazy that was. Everything felt different and everyone was different from last we saw them 6 years ago. A whole new world indeed. Bring it 😎

Yes, the time jump was an estimated 6 years. It's also good to know that there was even a full 1.5 years from the end of 8 to S9EP5, which makes it nearly 8 years since the war with the saviors and Carl's death. Besides that, this is a massive refresh for the series, and I'm glad the group is continuing on with it!

I would say maybe fill them in on what the fanbase was going through at the time, like how we got spoiled on Rick leaving and they had to tell us, Morgan and Dwight joining Fear, the time jump in between 9x5 and 9x6 was 6 years, etc. Stuff that's not spoilery, but would at least clear some confusion up.
