Just like with Andrea wanting to stay at Woodbury, many people, when given the choice, would rather live in comfort and deal with the "old world bureaucracy" than to have free will and rough it in the woods. Michonne could smell the BS from a mile away and she left. Unfortunately, The Alexandrians were in a position where they really needed aid so they decided to go. They were struggling and I think perhaps otherwise they probably wouldn't have taken Hornsby's offer to come join The Commonwealth. I don't think it's that unrealistic to have people in this universe who would choose to have that comfort if it were offered up to them (even if I personally also really hate bureaucracy and red tape.)

There’s 50,000 people apart of the Commonwealth it was in the orientation video that Princess Ezekiel Eugene And Yumiko watched And when Mercer read Eugene Princess Ezekiel And Yumiko their acceptance into the community when they were in the train car he said it’s united townships meaning it’s neighbouring towns grouped together We probably are only seeing the main town right now.

I get not liking the commonwealth I didn't like it either when I first watched but then I realized it's the place that's the problem it's the people in charge and how they run it, this problem has been seen all throughout the show when the survivors came across another community. Negan and the saviors, the governor and his town, all these places were fine it's the leaders who needed to go away.
