Ever since its premiere in 2010, many have asked the question: is The Walking Dead still on? After 11 seasons over the course of 12 years, The Walking Dead has gone from one of the best and most respected TV shows of all time to one of the most hated of all time, with many believing that it went on for too long and became formulaic and boring. I am not one of those people. I've been a fan of The Walking Dead for almost 10 years now, and in that time I've grown to appreciate the show much more than most others. In today's video, I'll be going over the history, production, writing, and generally everything that I love (and some stuff that I hate) about The Walking Dead, and why I think that overall, it is a genuinely great show and deserves much more respect than it gets. So join me as we survive with Glenn, Negan, Michonne, Daryl, and Ricky Dicky Doo Dah Grimes as we take an in-depth look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of AMC's The Walking Dead. This is The Walking Dead Retrospective. We are the Walking Dead. We are the ones who live. #thewalkingdead #rickgrimes #daryldixon

Copyright stuff forced me to absolutely butcher the AMVs at the end of each section, so I've put the uncompromised edits (with some extended versions) over on my Patreon: www.patreon.com/MattCMG Might do the same for some older videos but I'm lazy so we'll see Anyways, if this video does well, I plan to cover all of The Walking Dead spinoffs, so subscribe for that or whatever.

The better someone is at lip reading the easier it is to differentiate certain lip movements and recognize the way someone is saying certain words, which leads to the conclusion they have an accent.

Sasha works because she represents sacrifice. She was one of the only people willing to lay down their lives for the group; she had been there from the start and had seen loss after loss, her speaking to Rick is impactful because she comforts him and lets him know that it’s okay to let go

Season 4 always has and always will be my favorite season of the show. The sickness arc, Bob, Hershel is goated, the Governor, the introduction of Abraham, Carl and Rick surviving on their own, Terminus, the first TWD f-bomb. I love it all.
@kcmet79
@kcmet79 4 ай бұрын
yes👍 it's def underrated imo. sickness arc gets too much hate. it has the best season finale (it's appreciated but i still think it's underrated), and also has (pretty much agreed on) the best episode ever. loved the mysterious element of the whole season, between karen/the sickness and terminus (the painting of terminus mary... brrrr). and by 4B our peak cast imo is in place. not to mention gimple took the show from the mess GM made it into in S3B and turned it around in amazing fashion... lizzy n mika, terminus, seeds for both planted in opening few eps. some solid souce material from which to mine, but gimple elevated it imo.

You have no idea how much i needed this. Its absolutely so refreshing to see a video that's not the generic "this show bad cause *this thing happened*" but rather an actual retrospective of the show. I am fully aware that the quality definitely decreased, and I have my fair share of criticisms. I'm just not gonna blindly worship the show, But the show past S7 went from Eh to something that eventually turns out pretty good. I at least think its much better when binged instead of being a weekly thing. Idk, I just feel the shows hate is..... Understandable, but also over exaggerated. And also Jerry is underrated and best supporting character. Yeah and fuck AMC

I feel like Shane’s ideas were right, but just as Andrea said, he has the wrong presentation. He has no empathy, even for people he claims that he loves (look what he does to lori at the CDC, or how he starts snapping at Carl because he’s angry). If you have no empathy, and what you want comes first, you are not a leader. You’re a lone wolf. Shane was lacking emotional intelligence before the apocalypse which is why he is a misogynist, he was never a good person and would not have made a good leader.

Shane fans seem to miss this and make Shane out to be some kind of Jesus Christ of the apocalypse just because Jon Bernthal said he originally wanted Shane to sacrifice himself so Rick can grow. Which if you watch the show and pay attention to the context clues it’s clear the writers wanted to portray Shane adapting way too fast and how that ultimately ended up resulting in his death. Him and Dale are on two sides of the extremes where Rick is in the middle.
@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W Ай бұрын
People say he was right, but only to a certain extent. He may have understood the gravity of the situation faster than Rick did, but unlike Rick, who actually adapted and actually tried to be a decent human being (with some slip ups, mind you), Shane was basically a black pilled doomer, and it more or less motivated all of his terrible decisions and bad attitude. His "I can make the tough decisions" attitude was a facade. He was barely holding it together, and Carl and Lori were his life jacket in open ocean. That's why he was so possessive and desperate to get then back. He was too rigid in his thinking and basically shut down in order to cope. Most of the group wouldn't have survived the winter, and he wouldn't have survived past season 3.

As far as long video-essays go, the only criticism I have of this one is with the jokes. Sometimes it hits, usually when it’s actually relevant to either the show or your point, but when the joke is just ‘gay’ or some other 2015-era youtube shit, it doesn’t really work. Otherwise this is a really good video. Despite it’s length, it didn’t feel like a long watch. Maybe just reign in the unfiltered comedy for similar videos.

So, I'm apperently this wierd guy who just loves S2. It was the best seson for me, seeing how messed up those people really are, how they still have to pretend that there's some social norms and so, but deeply inside already all of them gave up on them. Looking for Sophia was like looking for their innocent and Hershel did the same with his fanaticism. Both parties clinched for their values even if everything was screaming out there that this s*** doesn't matter anymore. Also, I loved music on this season. Top notch.

My Dad loved Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. Then Game of Thrones became garbage. Then he was told he had 3 weeks to live, endstage stomach cancer. 3 Days he joked around about cooking meth, and then he stopped talking. Like a Dog in Pain he rolled up and stopped everything. Just stitting there in front of the screen, doing nothing. He watched all of the Walking Dead with my mom like 17 times. I still remember that afternoon, I was suppose to study for a test I had that evening, but I just couldn't. Sat down besides him and they were in season 1. That one guy was bitten and they just left him at the side of the road, driving off to that lab. And I got up and returned to my books, never seeing my Dad Alive again. He would have loved House of the Dragon, he would have loved the last Seasons of Better Call Saul. And he would have watched all these Walking Dead Spinoffs. 20 times. He would have retired this week.

I'm not a sensitive SJW, but gah damn the AMOUNT of gay quips is quite intense. Every issue with TWD is pacing. Every single one of them, plot additions not working or feeling weird? To fill run time and they had to add a piece to an already completed puzzle. Repeated plot points, storylines dragged out, cast leaving, etc. But no matter what certain clips or moments that are untouched by pacing are some of the best in TV history. No Way Out in perticular being absolutely perfect. Carol scaring the kid causing him to scream, hearing Rick be unable to cry as it would attrach walkers, the symbolism of Rick being held down by this way of life and having to literally cut it off and return to his old ways (I know that’s the same as the comics but Andrew Lincoln’s acting showed it a lot better). I wish we had a “Walking Dead Kai” an edit where all the filler is cut allowing the good scenes to not be held down by the flow of the show (even if its’ fanmade and some lines of dialogue would reference content cut). It’d still be more enjoyable than the overal experience of the original

made it an hour in - awesome retrospective so far, you rlly went into detail and took your time with it. I can tell you have a lot of passion with this show, and as someone who grew up watching it, I can only agree. Your lame-ass jokes about grape and the constant gay jokes took me tf out of it tho - respectfully grow up and stick with the other parts of your humour, ur funny asf when youre not trying so hard to be edgy

Even as someone that always hated the "I stopped watching at season whatever" even I had to stop at a season whatever. Which to be absolutely fair to the show was probably 90% just because of Carl and Rick leaving the show which is largely an out of their control thing. I mean idk what the behind the scenes reasons for Carl leaving was but it's hard to imagine they just purposefully did that with zero real life incentive just on their own writing the show. Rick and Carl were the literal heart and soul of the show and it was taken away and that was my checkout moment. From there I reluctantly kept going in season 10, absolutely chored through season 11, and noped right out of most of these recent spinoffs. The one with Rick coming back I watched episode 1 and liked it alot but I'm not sure how much of that is just loving seeing Rick again. But outside of all that this series still does and will always have a special place in my heart. I liked it so much that I started the comic around season 4 of the show cause I just wanted more and didn't want to wait. Which got me into comics as a whole and at this point I'm hoping to start making my own. This is one of my favorite pieces of fiction, period. Regardless of it falling off towards the end.

In a zombie apocalypse, suicide should be a respected option. I understand why Beth’s family don’t want her to do it, but i can’t blame Beth for thinking that way, everything she was worried about did happen.

Hallucinations are actually somewhat more common with PTSD than one may think. Or you can take it as the show giving us insight that the character is looking into a memory blended into the real world in which the character cant see past their own memory. Like you know how someone can blank stare into space. Also not sure if there's anytbing edgy abouy PTSD either. I imagine the mental health in the apocalypse would be a prevelant issue for everyone and how it's handled is always going to be subjective.

I will always stand by that Rick’s 3rd hallucination should’ve been Glenn, Carl, or Lori. Not Sasha. If Sasha was the first choice then wtf were they actually thinking? The most logical and satisfying characters to have in that hallucination would’ve been Carl or Glenn. But since they basically gave Carl the middle finger last season, then Glenn is the obvious 3rd choice for Rick. But I imagine it was a combination of scheduling conflicts and maybe Steven Yeun just being done with the show, even if it’s just for a short cameo like this he probably wasn’t down to comeback which sucks because it would’ve made it a 10/10 episode alone by having Shane, Hershel, and Glenn all back one last time for Rick’s last episode. Would’ve given so much thematically to have Glenn there for his last episode but still is a great episode

I technically did stop watching right before negans introduction, but that was because I only watched it with a friend I went to middle school with but we were in hs by this point. We missed a couple weeks due to other commitments then it went on the hiatus so we slowly drifted apart. But I binged it from the beginning a year or so ago and my hottest take was I thoroughly enjoyed all 11 seasons. Kinda wish I did it sooner. Miss you Anna, I still think about those times together.

While your comedy is hit or miss for some people and makes it hard for me to recommend this video to just anyone, this is one of the best done analysis of the show I’ve seen. As someone who read the comics really young it holds a special place in my life, I didn’t mind the changes whatsoever for the first half of the show but it felt like it really lost its sense of self so it was a begrudging watch towards the end for me but I still think it’s the best “grounded” fictional universe there is, cause it’s really not in most ways, there’s just a fictional physical embodiment (the walking corpses) that draws out the extremes of humanity that I think won’t be repeated by many again.

Besides killing Carl and the boomerang storytelling(which they got down now with the ones who live) my only note is Robert Kirkman said the zombies started with space rock, a nod to the old zombie movie. My wish is that it started by experimental brain cancer tests. It kills you and makes your cells crave fresh meat
