I have watched this scene about a million times and it legitimately never fails to make me cry- The acting is phenomenal with all three of them, it truly feels like we’re witnessing a family reunite after they thought they’d lost each other. I’m a huge film buff and I’ve seen, studied, and dissected hundreds (if not thousands) of movies and tv shows, but _this scene?_ This scene has _never_ left my mind.

Lots of people always say Shane wasn't happy to see Rick. I say they are only half right. Rick was Shane's best friend, his partner as a Sheriffs deputy. They grew up together and went to hell and back for each other. Shane was happy Rick was still alive, because it meant his best friend was back, but that also put guilt in his mind for sleeping with Lori, and he had also fallen in love with her because he had thought Rick was dead. There was gunfire and walkers and soldiers killing people, honestly he did the best he could, if he hadn't put the gurney there walkers would have come in and eaten Rick. If Lori hadn't gotten it in Shane's head that the baby might be his, the fight he and Rick had might have been the thing to fix their friendship. I don't know, just my opinion.

Yeah the narrative that Shane was a bad guy needs to stop, he had his issues but Lori messed with his head so bad after Rick came back, Shane tried everything to get Rick to wake up and even blocked the door from anyone getting in, Shane even said in the episode where Shane and Rick find a place to drop off Randall he never looked at Lori before the apocalypse and he would do anything to go back

Sarah Wayne Callie’s performance is super underrated in this scene, you can see her initial shock that he’s alive, then she gets very emotional and happy, then as soon as you see her look at Shane she is filled with intense guilt and immediately starts sobbing in sadness because of what she did while also hugging him close because he is her love and she feels sorry. All in a span of seconds. Really good job here.

It couldn’t though because Rick is a stranger to them Judith and RJ. Judith barely remembers him because she was so young when he died, and RJ’s never met him. He’s a mythical figure come to life for them. For me, the Judith/RJ/Rick meeting is sentimental in its own way. I was overjoyed Rick was united with those kids. He can now get to know them. With Carl, it hits different because Carl knew his dad. The run, the shout ….it all makes sense. RJ being shy and nervous makes sense! I personally love both reunions for different reasons.

The acting in this scene from everyone is fantastic. Jon Bernthal and Sarah Callies both look conflicted; happy that Rick is alive but worried about its implications for their burgenoning relationship. Andrew Lincoln does an incredible job at portraying what it feels like to be overwhelmed by emotions all at once - losing the ability to speak and just gesturing. Chandler was also a great actor at such a young age, you can really feel the relief and joy when he calls out for his dad. Easily one of the best scenes in the show.
