I've been getting into woodworking myself! The seed was planted when the house I bought came with a workshop in the basement and I started in earnest when I took down a Japanese maple and fell in love with the spalted wood. I follow several woodworking and making channels. And also several science channels. You making a desk out of that beautiful walnut would be the perfect intersection of my two passions.
@aervanath6 жыл бұрын
If you have interesting science to share, then yes. Slo-mo footage of the tools interesting with the wood, if it shows something surprising, for example, or an explanation of exactly why nails work (clearly they work, but they're smooth, it never made sense to me how they bind the wood together). If you just want to showcase how to woodwork, then I don't think it's really a "smarter every day"-worthy video; it's better on this channel, or a collaboration with a woodworking channel.
@lokkypooiuytreza54446 жыл бұрын
aervanath Nails work thanks to the wood fibers putting pressure on their whole circumference once they're hammered down. That's why you don't nail anything on plaster or concrete. ;^)

Yess! Absolutely Destin! As a mechanical engineer who enjoys woodworking, I would love to see how you approach the various challenges of turning a slab into a piece of furniture!
@Wordsnwood6 жыл бұрын
Destin, that is my game... and yes, I can guarantee that people would watch your video. The question is how do you want to approach it. Your channel is often about getting behind the scenes and getting into the how and why, so I wonder if you might want to partner up with someone on this, and have your channel be more about the typical SED type questions and on their channel they could do the build part. Next door to you in Mississippi you can find Jay Bates with the "jays custom creations" channel who could do something like that. Of course you are friends with Bob Clagget of I-Like-To-Make stuff who could also hook you up. I know a guy up here in Ontario who does things like this all the time -- CanadianWoodworks instagram -- he slaps the slab on a massive CNC and uses that to surface the piece. Best wishes, and Happy Christmas!

Main channel, 2nd channel.....Im going to watch it wherever. I would suggest maybe try to start it off in the main channel and direct the rest of the videos to the 2nd channel. Sometimes the people in youtube can be resistant to change and your good intentions should not get unnecessary negativity. Looking forward to the videos!! If anyone else agrees with this or have a better idea let him know by liking/replying to this.
@jimroberson95346 жыл бұрын
sooriyah007 I agree totally. I trust you, Destin, that you will keep the contents of your channels in line with your original intentions. I was thinking if you put some cardboard tube or something through it, then fill around it with resin, then remove the tube. That way you have a nice neat cable run that looks really funky.

@LuckyCoinFrog6 жыл бұрын

@UpLateGeek6 жыл бұрын
Filling such a big gap with clear epoxy is going to be tough without leaving bubbles in it. The way they do it in epoxy casting is to vacuum down the epoxy to suck out as many bubbles as possible, fill the mould, then put it in a pressure chamber to crush any remaining bubbles to microscopic sizes. It could be possible for your wood, but you'd need a huge vacuum/pressure chamber, and then I don't know how the wood would react. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a science experiment! The epoxy vacuum/pressure stuff could make an interesting video on it its own. I'd suggest going back to your wood guy and asking if he's got any particularly gnarly off-cuts you could experiment with before trying with you big chunk. Also, it might help if you know anyone at NASA who'd let you use one of their huge vacuum chambers.
@macaroniandtuna6 жыл бұрын
The way to fill a deep gap with epoxy (having seen the Samurai Carpenter do it) is to fill it with multiple thin layers of epoxy, building up to the surface gradually. Apparently, as long as the epoxy isn't totally cured, it'll form linkages between the semi-cured layer and the newly-poured layer, no problem.
@UpLateGeek6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I've also seen people spray a mist of denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol or something when making those epoxy dome things, which does a pretty good job of removing the air bubbles from such a thin layer of epoxy, so that could probably be used when pouring multiple thin layers too.
