I realized that the Baldwin sister s’ house was used in an episode of Bewitched: it was the house that Endora, planning to keep tabs on Uncle Arthur, who was staying with Darrin and Samantha, has the house appear on a vacant lot. Endora and Uncle Arthur then have competing spells, making the house appear and disappear several times (witnessed by Gladys Kravitz)

Thanks for that great picture of The Baldwin House! The Calling struck me as a very different storyline for The Walton's! The focus on Catholics as being exotic and dangerous made me smile a bit. Being a Nun is romanticized it seems. I am Catholic, but I don't know which order of Sisters wears those impossible hats!! Oh my goodness!! Poor Ben and poor Jim Bob: things don't often go their way despite the warm hearts they are to people. I have wondered about that tree climbing scene! It certainly looks way up there!! It's funny about the Schuyler Baptist vs their notion of Catholics! I met a very strict Baptist English teacher the year we both were hired to teach literature in a boy's college prep school. Infatuated as I was/am with all things Walton's I often asked about her Baptist faith. She has memorized a good many verses like Mary Ellen! We became great friends and I asked her to be our son's Godmother Bec of her great devotion. She is a little strict similar to Esther Walton and it's lovely! I am enamored of small, wooden white churches in the forests because of the Walton's! Lastly, and most importantly, I admire Jim Bob for getting those kites to fly! That is an extra special talent!! 😄 Mine always nosedive and drag on the ground. Thanks so much for all your insights! I recognized that dress! Yes! I'll bet the Costume shop did have bolts and bolts! Can't wait to see what you next have planned for us! Bless you Judy and Walton's everywhere!❤🪁🌳🐿️🧡🪁🌳🐿️💚🪁🌳🐿️🍃🍂🍁🙏🕊️

Those nun habits were interesting with the flying nun hats!!! Corabeth was so funny the way she got so upset about the nuns, lol. There were a few times the Baldwin sisters talked about how they weren't Baptist( especially the earlier seasons), but then in the later seasons they attend the Baptist church as if they had attended their whole life. I would love to see David on again, and often if possible. You see I was his age exactly I think when the Waltons was on the air. Not only that but he seems to be much like myself, and a tad shy, perhaps I'm wrong. Lord knows no one knows anyone until the actually meet, but I have heard he is shy a bit and that's compliment to use others that are that way in life. Now that is me also. It's not that cannot or do not like going places at all. It's the crowds and things of this nature is what I do not desire. I like be alone myself. I would love to hear what his remembers too, because everyone experiences life differently and has theie own personal memories, that others can't relate to, or remember. Now that would a treat for me and others. I hate to ask this but could you expand on how you literally grew up aside of Mr. Ralph Senensky, and come full circle and to know him now as an adult. I'm curious not nosy lol as to how this relationship just kept on growing. He's so sharp and I love it every time he and Josh are your guest. So much history. I truly enjoy his view point also I have also learned so much from you just as a human being and your preciseness no how you do your channel. I myself and have thought of you while doing my own. Oh lord I had to edit my own as in a shall I use memorials I place at times and had just recently had to face that i was just leaving out so many pieces out one would tend to look at some, or have feelings about certain things that are not correct about how quickly I put word on my page . I have an issue with shall we call it mania at times. I do though realize what it is when I am like that and I do take self awareness of this in my own life. Enough of this but yes I can be in what I call the Ozone lol of it all. I know this is a dab long but I watched both of your last two and just had to remark on then both so I did it here... You are totally together and you do a very good job here. I can write lyric so fast it can make ones head spin, but to express myself in writing believe me no one would to even think about looking said writings over lOl I literally have learned to walk outside of my mind to do an over view of what I think is me, and how perhaps I should be. Thanks so much for learning me not only through your self, but also all those cool guest you have on............... Later and thank you

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your own experiences. David is a “deep thinker” from my perspective. It is interesting what each of us recall (or not) from our years of filming the series. As for Ralph Senensky - I had not had any contact with him for decades after he last directed our show. Then came back in contact because of John Dayton who has stayed in touch.

Another case of "The Waltons" imitating my life. I was a Catholic boy who fell in love with a Baptist girl and for two years we were inseparable even though we went to colleges 150 miles apart. I thought she was the one, all the way up until I got the "dear John" letter. I tried a couple of times to work things out but decided that it wasn't in the cards so I walked away. She passed away in 2016 but she was and is still a part of me. As you know I did meet the girl who would be and is "the one" and we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary o July 20th. As you know she is a big fan of "The Waltons" and you as well Judy.

There seems to be some discussion that this may not have been the usual house seen for the Baldwins. Not sure I ever filmed at the exterior of their house, so I’m not really familiar with it. The interiors were filmed on the sound stages. It seems the Ranch is being redeveloped with new sound stages and is still intended to be used for filming and entertainment activities rather than a housing development.

This episode reminds of what my maternal grandparents put up with. My grandmother was an Irish Catholic and my grandfather was a Scottish Protestant. People, including the pastor of my grandmother’s church, tried to talk my grandmother out of marrying my grandfather. But my grandmother held firm and they were married, anyway. That was around 1921. This was despite the fact that my grandfather was a custodian at the church and school. The nuns said he would, surely, receive his reward in Heaven

Mitzi Hoag had quite a "religious range" as an actress! Here she was Sister Theresa and she also played Natalie Green's mother on The Facts of Life. (the Green's were Jewish. I remember them sitting Shiva when Natalie's father died.The first I'd heard of that tradition) Mitzi was such a good solid actress who was seen all over screens back in the day like Here Come the Brides, Bonanza, and so many other projects. It's sort of become a part of my life now and every Monday and Thursday is Judy Norton time. It's a safe and calming environment so - please? Second, referring to aspect ratios and mistakes, I have noticed when they bumped up Star Trek Next Generation for blue ray, and bumped up the aspect ratio - same problem. Here and there you see a boon mike or whatever. I suspect that's the problem with this episode as that's a pretty easy fix - but, who knows. What I love about your commentary is that when you are not sure, you are not sure. Appreciated. Love your channel Judy. Thanks Judy for all of your work with these videos. Jim Bob was one of my favorite characters, so this was one of my favorite episodes. John and Olivia gave their children so much freedom to find their life's paths. It's a shame that Mary Francis came from such a parochial background, and wonder if she was really at peace with her decision. She let go of a good man!

This was fascinating for me to watch. I was Catholic for many years before I switched to a different Christian way of life. The spiritual dynamics were interesting. The headdresses the Sisters wore reminded me of the series about the Flying Nun with Sally Field. It was nice to see Jim Bob trying to spread his wings a bit. Several good story threads. Thanks, Judy.

Another great video Judy! In watching this episode in the past, I never noticed how different the property around the Baldwin house looks compared to earlier seasons. In this episode there seems to be so much open space around the house. In earlier seasons, there were many more trees and shurbs. The garage is also missing. In the episode when the falling star lands in the Baldwin's house we see the garage and how different the left side of the house looks. Also, in the episode with Denver Pyle, we see alot of the garage. In the Gypsy episode, the front of the Baldwin's also looks very different and I think there may have even been a stone or brick wall with gate. Were Columbia and Warner Brothers associated with each other or did they just have an agreement to share locations? Thanks Judy!

The two lots had merged at one point I believe. It does seem that this could be a different exterior house being used.

Thanks for this one Judy. Its one of my favorites being Catholic myself. I loved the Mary Frances character. The episode was a very well written storyline. Am I mistaken? But wasn't a different exterior used for the Baldwin residence? I recall a front that was white with more ornamentation. Thanks! Love you Judy!

I'm glad David Harper had this opportunity, opportunity to show an affectionate Jim-Bob, and I do wonder if David had any special memories of his role in this episode - did he recognize it as special. Fortunate or unfortunate, Jim-Bob's relationship experience depicted in the reel world is mirrored by many in the real world. Making the most of what one is dealt is where it's at.

Hi Judy. Another great review. I could not believe how well the baby seemed to be so comfortable with all of you especially you Judy. How was this accomplished? Also, this episode had so many of the actors highlighted which made it so well written.
@judynorton2598Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed this. As for the twins who played John Curtis - on days I worked with them, I basically “babysat” whichever I was working with. In that way - keeping him with me between takes etc meant he was most comfortable and familiar with me. If he saw his Aunt who brought him to set, then he wanted to be with her and then it was tough to take him away. He’d cry 😢.
@joeseeking3572Ай бұрын
Poor Jim Bob - he actually grew into a rather handsome young man, although the character always retained a certain amount both the vulnerability and defiant independence of a 4-6 year old. He was always just slightly out of the mainstream. How much of that was the writing, my imagination or David Harper is an interesting question.
@judynorton2598Ай бұрын
He was a wonderful character - quiet but a definite presence. As we each began to grow into our characters the writers found a pattern and continued to build along that line.

Thanks Judy....i mentioned this episode to you a few months back regarding Sister Mary Francis and Jim Bob and the closing episode narration by Earl (sept '78). I am halfway through S7 again as it happens....i work backwards for some reason, S9-S1, but always the 1st episode in the season forward. I thought the same thing for a long time now....the scene with Sister Mary and Jim Bob seemed really high in that tree....not sure how that was filmed. They wouldn't have been up that high. Must have been something like the Wing Walker episode from 1975....Lee Purcell? was it who stood on the wing which was just above the ground not actually flying. I don't know. I recently watched the tv show Tulsa King, only the 1st episode so far but was reasonably impressed....Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone. Watched a lot of Stallone's films.... (i hate saying 30-45 years ago because it seems a long time ago)...so a while back i have settled on....it wasn't over the top like his Rambo films except the 1st one....First Blood which was very well done and had depth to the story which was sadly lacking from the others.

Glad you enjoyed this one. Wish I had more info on how the tree scene was filmed.

I really like when you break down the behind the scenes of each episode. Wish I had seen the breakdown of “The Comeback” from season 5. In it there’s a scene where Jason introduces Red at the Dewdrop and Red (Merle Haggard) sings “Nobody’s Darling” - It looked as if Jon had a tear in his eye and I couldn’t tell if he was acting or not. Wonder if you were on set for that scene or not.

I wonder how many times the Baldwin sisters house was used in television shows and movies. I noted it when I watched a repeat of Bewitched. It was the house that Endora makes appear on the Stephens’ street. Then she and Uncle Arthur have a back and forth, as he makes it vanish, and she has it return (with a comical by play involving Abner and Gladys Kravitz).

@judynorton2598Ай бұрын
The Baldwins wardrobe would have been coordinated through our wardrobe dept which had access to the Warner Bros costume stock. So I’m guessing many of their costumes were from stock and maybe the occasional dresses made specifically for them by our seamstresses.
