When I worked as a Companion to Elderly people, I helped a family, Mom, Dad & daughter in her 40’s, ill with cancer. As I was helping the younger woman one day, she told me that the Mom had had a massive stroke approximately 3 years prior that they were afraid she wouldn’t recover from. She did and I couldn’t detect any debilitation from it, no halting in her gait or vocal problems, much like the character of Marcus Dane.

Great segment, Judy! I agree, it was so wonderful that Ellen was given the opportunity to continue to do meaningful work. Also, her real-life health challenges made the show so much more authentic in depicting real situations that many families face. Looking forward to your next video!

Earl Hamner also wrote the screenplay for Heidi (1968). That Sunday in November 1968, NBC was televising an AFL football game between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. The game was very close, with several lead changes. All of a sudden, at 7 PM Eastern Time, NBC quit televising the game in order to start Heidi on time. Heidi is a great movie, but people were FURIOUS that NBC cut to that movie instead of seeing the game through to its end. The game (Nov. 17, 1968) became known as The Heidi Bowl. The Raiders ended up winning, but the Jets beat Oakland in the playoffs en route to their Super Bowl III win. So Earl Hamner wrote for a movie that ended up causing quite a stir.

It wasn’t just her physical beauty, it was her beauty on the inside too. With Erin, she was the more docile, gentle, sweet sister. She was more feminine, elegant, graceful, down to earth and charming. Her cuteness, and kind heart made her stand out more among the sisters. She had simplicity, purity as well. She could be a literal princess !! 🎀🌸🌙🕯️💕💖

I love seeing Ellen in the later episodes, especially when we occasonally see the return of her sassiness. Judy, was Ellen ever able to speak better than what we see on tv? How did she communicate with all of you? Did she have to write notes?

“ whiskey in the jar 🫙 “ Fabulous work Judy,, Jolly Good! Judy Ellen was on a 1958 Alfred Hitchcock movie with James Stewart “ Vertigo “ She was a hotel manager and told Stewart she hadn’t seen a lady he was looking for. She had been in the lobby all day putting olive oil on her rubber tree plants and surely would have seen her. Yancy was on to something with his distilled production operation. He didn’t know about aging his product in charred oak barrels for a much more mellow and palatable libation. Nowadays we get in every gallon of gas about 10% of Yancy’s brew as fuel. ⛽️ I didn’t know know Jim Bob had an eagle 🦅 on his car. My 51 Chevrolet pick up has always sported a beautiful screaming eagle on her hood. Judy your cold is getting better and you’ll be good as new in no time 😊. 1967 Dubliners whisky 🥃 in the jar . I have always loved Ellen. Whether she was playing Miss Mary Stevens in the movie On Moonlight Bay, Abigail in Support Your Local Gunfighter or as grandma in The Homecoming and all the years of the series and standalone Walton's movies/specials...I loved her very much and was thankful for the expertise she brought to every character. I miss her very much. ❤

I have always admired Ellen Corby for her heroic comeback after having a severe stroke. Most people would be embarrassed and give up acting at this point. But Ellen made it work and was that much more endearing for the effort and courage she showed to us all. A jewel as a person and a tribute to her craft.

I love all you do here, Judy. Though I especially thank you for your highlighting and honoring of Ellen & Michael’s relationship and the impact of the missing garden after Will’s passing. They are both so moving. The garden change made me wonder if Gwen Arner had deliberately pulled that shot back to show Esther’s loss in that way too. Hating how barren it was, I looked closely and saw furrows. Briefly that gave me hope (though all these decades later) perhaps it was dormant and Mr. Geer’s plantings would soon return then. After checking the air date (late Nov.) I realized growth would’ve been visible even if you’d filmed only weeks before. You may have checked the same. I guess without tending someone decided it didn’t look as nurturing as he had maintained it. The positive view is the shocks we feel from any parts of missing someone show how much they continue with us. Thanks for all & Happy pre-holiday week. I hope you feel great through all (I thought you might be working through some stuffiness last week, still on the mend this week.) Super-immunity now through New Year!

Ellen was a "trooper in every sense of the word. She showed an amazing amount of determination and dedication to her craft. Kudos too, to the writers and directors who were patient and courteous enough to work with her and let her do what she could do within the scope of her handicap. She was amazing when allowed to be and it paid off in some of the most memorable episodes of "The Waltons". And a big hug to you kids as well for your patients with her. She loved you even more for it. Loved Artur Space in the role of Marcus Danes. You could tell that the admiration he had for Ellen was more than just the role he was playing. He really cared about Ellen. I also loved the interlude with Elizabeth when he explained to her that he could never take her Grandfather's place. That was very well done. Well Judy it's one a.m. and I have a busy week. Tomorrow I have lunch with all of my high school classmates who are still alive and in the area. We have a get together every three months or so, but i haven't been able to go. The last time some of them saw me I was in a wheel chair. i hear that some think that I have died. Boy this is going to be a shock. Then I go to the cancer center for what may be my last infusion. They are going to watch this series and if in April I have no more symptoms the doctors will declare me cured and that means no more insulin injections as well.

Grandma was so cute in this episode!! I noticed that her whole demeanor changed after she had the stroke. She used to be more stern and no nonsense, not smiling much. But after her stroke, her countenance changed, she smiled more, was softer, not as hard. She was more easygoing and compassionate.❤️ So cute when Olivia bought Grandma that pretty hat, and she got all dressed up. Ellen Corby did an amazing job acting after her stroke, she was a remarkable, hard working person. Very determined, dedicated and disciplined. It was so hard without Grandpa.. he was irreplaceable. Such an unforgettable character. Everyone missed him. Olivia was so nice and understanding with Grandma. Grandma loved Grandpa and she always will.❤️

Very touching to mention the empty garden - I immediately channeled the Elton John song if anyone knows it. I also see some comments pointing out early electric cars - yes, they were fairly popular, particularly from about 1910-1920, primarily as city cars, and generally with women drivers. Before the advent of the self-starter it was a real boon not to have to crank the thing - not so much because of effort but injury. Kettering invented it for Cadillac after Henry Leyland's (founder and head of Cadillac) friend was killed using the crank. Not perhaps so well known is the fact that Porsche, yes that Porsche, designed the first ever hybrid - back in 1900!

Good day Judy, another fire segment. Always enjoy your commentaries regarding the various episodes. John and most males look out for the females in the family when they begin dating. Guys know guys. Just looking out for the female relations. JB & Yancy had a good thing going. Gotta love ❤ Corabeth, she tries. If someone had full reign of the Warner Bros wardrobe stock, imagine the Halloween and masquerade outfits they could come up with. Grandma knew Marcus as a former beau (or "gentleman caller"... I recently watched the Glass Menagerie). Zeb was Esther's true love ❤. Marcus cared for Esther (gives her a rose bush, new blossoming beginning?). Esther wants to hold on to her past life with Zeb (puts a damper on the relationship with the watering of the rose bush?). They reach a settlement, friendship. Have a question for you. Was the soundstage and exterior lot near each other? Thanks Judy.

Hello Judy! I just loved this episode! You get a glimpse of how everyone feels about grandma having a boyfriend. I get Elizabeth. I remember when this first aired, I realized that I didn't like the idea either, but it was so heartwarming to watch each family member relate to the new world without grandpa. I never noticed the garden until you pointed it out, which, of course, brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so MUCH for another wonderful video!! 🥰

A very touching, and beautiful telling of this episode, hon! I’ve never been able to see it, but you more than made it come alive for me in watching and listening to all of what you provided and described. What a truly precious soul Elen was. Arthur Space touched my heart as well, and very deeply many years back in a singularly stand out early episode of the original Perry Mason TV series starring Raymond Burr which aired in the late 1950’s where Space portrayed an alcoholic, broken, and guilt ridden father to a very selfless young man Mason defended who also touched my heart deeply. That episode and another that followed a few years later featuring a very young, and extraordinarily gifted actress who equally brought me to tears as well I learned just only a few years back is the little sister in real life of that very equally gifted young actor in that first Mason episode. I was able at that time to discover her all grown up here on Facebook, but have never felt led to intrude on her privacy even via Messenger.

Amazing episode, Jim Bob 's ilea for electric car that will never work due to astronomical cost of batteries , But his Idea for alcohol fuel now very Big thing in California and other major cities . Every episode Ellen did was Glorious , this one especially as she looked so great in that hat that kept coming back for many episodes Ellen would do until the End of series . My favorite part was the song Moonshiners by Jon , the company even made song available on net with all the credits on it for people to copy and post and it has been posted everywhere on KZbin Facebook and other websites . The Waltons are still running forever maybe .Ralph was always great director and many scenes reflect it as you said with Michael and Ellen.

Miss Corby conveyed so much emotion with her facial expressions alone. Given her very limited speech she was still such an amazing actor. As for the character Esther, she was always very stern and set in her ways and beliefs. After Zebs passing I would have never of thought she would even have considered going on a date. I would imagine she would have said that it just wasn't proper. However it was good to see a change in her thinking for a bit. Thank you Judy for these vlogs.❤

It was a very touching episode- and yes, I liked seeing the interaction between Olivia and Esther as though Olivia was a teen girl getting her bestie ready for a prom date! That was touching and nice to know that Miss Learned and the late Miss Corby's chemistry was real! I had to give pause at Marcus's claim that Esther's stay over the weekend in his house would be chaperoned due to the presence of Marcus's housekeeper. I mean, it would have been one thing had he lived with his own ancient mother or even aunt who he'd have to defer to but a housekeeper would be his employee- hardly in a position to tell her employer to not get fresh with his houseguest! Still, I liked how Esther at least allowed her self go on a date since it had been ages since she'd been on one and it's likely she wanted to relive the deal of dressing up, having dinner and being tended to - even though she knew that her dating days were over and she truthfully couldn't imagine bonding with anyone but Zeb. I also couldn't help but imagine that Zeb might have had some choice words about Marcus and not above using his physical strength or prowess to outflank his rival in their youth! IIRC, though, there was an early episode in which Zeb got more flirty with the Baldwin Sisters than Esther liked and (with encouragement from Olivia) Esther decided to make him jealous by at least being extra cordial to the square dance caller who'd been her premarital beau (NOT Marcus). Cute moonshine fuel for the cars (and I can't help but imagine that ZEB would have gotten into the middle of it to get the most refined product possible). BTW, there HAD been electric cars around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries- with up to 38 percent of all cars in the US being electric but inefficient batteries and sporadic charge stations especially outside urban areas somewhat derailed them by the 1920s for nearly the next century. Thanks so much for this!

Hello Judy,I had a question about the empty garden you noticed on your segment. Do you recall why this was shown in camera range? Was this plot filled in later with plants, flowers, and vegetables in order to honour Will Geer,as well as grandpa? To grow them from the type of seedlings that he held in his pockets would have taken some time to grow, but would perhaps be a lovely way to preserve his beautiful work. As they have created at The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum?

One thing I noticed in this episode was that, during the closing shot of the house, where normally the kids would speak, then say Goodnight, there was no dialog on this one. I imagined that everybody was busy with their own thoughts.
