RE: "Subtitles At The End" -- At the end, Liu Qi passes the rebels (from the novella) demonstrating against the United Earth Government; but it happens so fast that most audiences couldn't catch the chants unless they were reading the subtitles, which say "Return us to our sun!"
@EarnestlyEston5 жыл бұрын
I didn't catch that this is what the rebels were chanting. The Sun rebels are one of the most interesting things in the book I think.

@@EarnestlyEston The film is filled with details/easter eggs -- e.g. at the end, Liu Qi puts on the winged badge left in the hibernation chamber by his father, i.e. the hibernation chamber was eventually rescued by earth at the end...

Would like to see another one on how earth decide to wander instead of to fly ppl out with spaceships. And another one on the riot. Sounds like a good triology.

Here is how to pronounce the author's name (Liu Cixin): The author's Chinese name is 刘慈欣. 刘 (Liú) is the surname, and 慈 (Cí) 欣 (Xīn) makes the given name. To know how the name is pronounced, go to translate.google.com and (1) put 刘慈欣 in the left text box, (2) change the language for the left side to Chinese / Simplified Chinese, (3) click on the "Read" button at the bottom of the left text box. Now you will get how 刘慈欣 is pronounced in Chinese. You can use this method to learn the pronunciation of each Chinese character. More tips: Liú Cí Xīn is the exact pinyin ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pinyin ) form, which is slightly different from Liu Cixin, as almost each Chinese character is pronounced with one of 4 pitches of voice. For example, 溜 (Liū), 刘 (Liú), 柳 (Liǔ) and 六 (Liù) are four Chinese characters with the same sound and different pitches of voice. They are of the first, second, third and fourth pitches of voice, respectively.

Thank you for letting me know about this error! It was the English language version that was copyrighted in 2011 and published in 2012. I'll add a correction to the description.

in the begin and end of movies, you can see a group of people match through the Underground city and hold some billboards in Chinese: Returning OUR Sunshine and helium flash is a lie. it is an implication relative to the original book. and the director implied that there may be the second film for wandering earth.
@EarnestlyEston5 жыл бұрын
I would love for there to be a second Wandering Earth film!

The biggest bug that disturbed me in the film was ... how come human can predict something going to happen so far ahead and had the confidence to execute such a plan but failed to predict the potential impact of Jupiter’s gravity or to see that earth was off the track? How could the “international government whatever” so easily gave up for hope in such desperate situation? How could this so called “government” dictated the decision making for the entire human race? Luckily in the end they allowed the dad to give it a shot. I was not very much into sfi-fi and did not really like Blade runner, for example, but after I watched The wandering earth, I could appreciate blade runner more.

I don't think they have original plan to shoot a second film. However, as the box office rocketed towards No. 1 (Wu Jing himself held it with 5.6 billion RMB), they must have considered a squeal, probably altered from book as rebel part too dark to pass authority review. With success of this film, people gained more confidence in movie version of three body trilogy ,which is in preparation for too many years.
@EarnestlyEston5 жыл бұрын
I do hope they do a sequel to The Wandering Earth that would be more philosophical like the book even if it doesn't have so much of the rebel part. But I had heard that the movie version of three body trilogy was in the works so that is going to be amazing. That Trilogy is phenomenal!
@johnwick-uo8vt5 жыл бұрын
@@EarnestlyEston the three body trilogy movie had finished shooting in 2017. But the quality sucks and received a lot of criticism from Chinese fans. So the making of the film was suspended.

I bumped into your book review video about 2 weeks ago when I was searching movie trailer, I think your pronunciation of Liu Cixin's name improved a lot, almost perfect now. The tricky names are fine as well , just Wu Jing (Kongfu star) sounds still a little bit foreign to my ears.

Thanks for the feedback! I will continue to practice to get better with pronouncing Chinese names :)

Thanks for this. Knowing your thoughts on the book to movie makes me think the writing in the movie is even worse than I already thought it was. In my review of the film, I discuss the fact that the writing is way too packed with things that they then never have a chance to explore. Characters are showing up evry 2 seconds, and there are at least 10 completely useless scenes. The fact that it's a novella and discusses things like the transience of life means that the movie threw in things that were not in the book, and could have just had those themes and been much better for it. Thanks for this video!

Wu Jing is a martial artist/ actor just like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen and so on, basically he do action movies. I cried so hard as the others in theatre when he sacrifices himself to save his son, which reminds me my parents. Anyways, it's a huge move for Chinese sci-fi and I really expect there will be more good&better sci-fi movies like this one. Thanks for u review.

The good news is that I read that Netflix has purchased the streaming rights for the film so if you're not able to see it on big screen that might be an option (if you have Netflix).
@fanfei205 жыл бұрын
The subtitle was ok, but it's apparently done by different person/team, I notice a lot of inconsistencies in style and also characters names. I don't think they even proof read it before the showing. Also some nuances are lost in translation. They were shown according to the lines in Chinese, so sometime a short sentence in Chinese got translate to a longer text in English, it would only shows up a split second, making it hard to read. I hope Netflix will redo the subtitles. In the ending sequences where Liu Qi is walking across the roundabout with the tree hanging upside down, there are people chanting "We demand our Sun back!", which allude to that conflict in the book.
@EarnestlyEston5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information about the subtitles! Of course I didn't know how accurate they were since I can't understand the Chinese language. I also completely missed that the chants were pertaining to the sun rebels.

C and Ch as Consonants pronounced like “CH” in CHURCH. ( Most Chinese can’t even really differentiate the two, they are so close in sound.) X as Consonant pronounced like S in English. so the answer to his name would be: Liu Chur Sing

the last part of the book can let the people think Elite politics and Populist politics, which one is better. now,the politically correct think that the elite politics will lead to the corruption. Let all the people select the direction is better. But the elite proportion of the population will not change, even the higher education is very popular. The problem is the people believe the government or not, especially the ong-term policy of the governmen. Although the chinese people believe the government more then the western countries. So, the end of the book , the government can't acquire the trust of the people , is verry not politically correct for a popular film, even in china.
@EarnestlyEston5 жыл бұрын
I thought the conflict about whether or not people believed the government was very well portrayed in the book and was one of the most interesting aspects of it.
