This story takes place approximately 400 hundred years in our future. “The Coalition” controls the world. Earth rotation has been stopped. Hundreds of years ago they discovered the sun would expand far sooner than expected. Generational spaceships would not work to house all of humanity. They decided to move the earth elsewhere using giant engines commonly referred to as mountains and peaks, they are powered through nuclear fusion, and the largest are up to 11,000 meters tall (about 7 miles high). The migration process will take 2,500 years approx. 100 human generation will pass over the course of that time.

I’ve read many of Cixin Liu’s short stories and my favorite is Mountains, about the long history of an alien race that must overcome a millennia of struggle before they can even reach the same starting point of our own civilization.

@@saucevc8353 Maybe. I think the ultimate takeaway from the story is that sometimes terrible sacrifices are necessary in order to make progress. For the aliens, it was thousands of years of trial and error. The mountain climber is simply our human way of relating to the aliens and what they were going through for thousands of years.

Really. It would be more productive to take the Moon and more material from the Solar System with it. After all, economic issues in this scenario are no longer a priority. So using all human effort to bring maximum chances of survival to the next Star System would be fundamental. Although it might be possible to find and move a replacement Moon to Alpha Centauri. After learning how to move the Earth, moving Moons and remodeling a new Solar System becomes a game for a Civilization capable of this.

Well from what I understood, based on Quinn’s interpretation, is that it wasn’t necessarily about taking “everyone”. The decision to move the Earth was motivated by the fact that running away on ships wasn’t enough to sustain human survival. They believed that humans needed the Earth’s ecosystem to increase survivability. So it was less about saving the entire human race and more about ensuring that the humans that needed to survive, survived, and moving the entire planet was the best option. I’m sure the humans making the decisions knew that that many people needed to be sacrificed in order to ensure that they survived in much the same way humans are sacrificing each other today. Letting nations starve. Hoarding wealth and resources. Funding both sides during wartime, etc etc.

@JohnSiu absolutely. Liu's story to me was about how humans would cope under such incredible stress. Even when the rebels tied the leaders and scientists up, the leaders forgave them and said that they should have expected them to go insane. The short story is a human story whereas the film was mash up of standard Sci Fi tropes.

This reminds me of a very old short story called 'a bucket full of air' ( I think that's what it's called, by the same guy that wrote metropolis) Only there, earth had been pulled out of its orbit by another planet that had come crashing into our solar system from outside. Since it was written so long ago, it's kind of hard to believe some of the things would work. (Like how the father of the storyteller made their shelter for example) but it's still quite an interesting story. Seems people have been wondering what would happen if earth moved away from the sun like this for many years.

I’ve been making my own sci fi, and while it is probably a lot more unrealistic (aliens, wormholes, stuff like that) I’ve recently found it a lot more easy to just make up new science/laws of physics. While I understand some people may not want to do that, it is okay to sometimes take a leap of faith with the science, especially in a scenario that hasn’t, or even anything remotely similar p, ever happened in human history 😊

This makes me feel that Cixin Liu is at the very least aware of the existence of Hodgeson's "The Night Land"

Nice shout out to Dan Simmons and Hyperion. Definitely one of my favorite book and series. Next to the Death Gate Cycle, by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Dan's world building is great and you've made me want to read it for the... I've lost count. I wonder which of the stories the pilgrim's told was your favorite?
