Fascinating information about the Comanches. I had no idea they were so warlike.

Their society was permanently geared for war They were the most lethal of all the North American tribes, They were the only Indians that fought almost exclusively from horse-back. Deadly cavalry that gave no mercy. Apex killers of human beings in their domain.

They were cruel. Tortured children, burning bit by bit, cutting off noses, lips, limbs. And that has been verified by many other Indian tribes! Spanish & Mexican citizens and American settlers.

The Spaniards, it seems, reached an agreement with the Comanches, in which the Spaniards (in the name of the king) would give every year in the form of a fair that they held in San Antonio, a series of gifts such as rifles, gunpowder, bullets. , alcohol, iron tools, bells, clothes, etc. and in return they would not be bothered by the Comanches, for which they did a series of rituals such as burying some weapons, smoking the pipes of peace, etc. When the Spaniards left and were replaced by a Mexican garrison, the Comanches came "for the king's gifts," which they did not receive, thus beginning a state of war between Comanches and Mexicans. It seems that soon after the Comanches suffered an epidemic of smallpox that killed almost all.

There seems to be some dissension among experts as to the degree of Comanche unified political organization. As far as I know, only Thurman believes that there was such a more or less central leadership. Wallace and Hoebel, Kavanagh, and most others dissent. Older sources think that the Apaches had adapted to semi-nomadic life on a broad basis. This made it easier to find - and attack - them than pure buffalo nomads like the Comanches - so this was the main reason for their defeat. Thurman's position is refuted by D. Gelo's article in 'Current Anthropology' 1987/4.

If y’all want to know native history talk to native elders. Lots of channels like this are uninformed and one sided. Especially the part where native people didn’t keep their part of the treaty. Hahahaha
@KernowekTim3 жыл бұрын
Sadly both sides tell lop-sided variants of fact. One thing is irrefutable though; the Nermenuh were the most lethal of the tribes. They took lands from other tribes by ruthless force and showed no-one mercy, Eventually the roles were reversed, and they in their turn were hunted down, and had their domains taken from them, by a race that was more lethal, more determined, and far more affective at waging total war, all year round..

True. But impossible unless you live in the US. Both sides broke treaties that were basically impossible to up-hold, from what I can gather. Peace or trade treaties were made with clans, in ignorance of the clan system not being unilateral. A treaty with a Penatekuh clan didn't hold with Kotsotekuh clans, for example.

@@KernowekTim The only treaty upheld by both Comanche and Anglos was made near Fredericksburg, Texas by Comanches and the German settlers there. Descendents of those peacemaking leader gathered together to commerate the 150th (I think) anniversary of that unbroken treaty several years ago.
