This war lasted for the most part the history of my entire adult life. I have a friend, Canadian regiment, who was stationed in Kandahar. Coming back home, he was truly confused why the media and our government was broadcasting victory in Afghanistan. He explained to me that there were still large swaths of the country the coalition forces never managed to gain control and that the Taliban were still there fighting.

Saying that the Taliban "won" is insanely misleading. We obliterated Afghanistan and essentially everything they owned withing weeks then occupied the nation for 2 decades before getting bored and leaving. Just cause a few of them survived to crawl out of their holes doesnt mean they "won". Infact as soon as they attempted to claim their supposed "prize" (that being Afghanistan as a whole) if became clear that they had no idea how to govern. No body won. But the US for sure got revenge.

@@ChurchSleazy yes you obliterated a nation with no military and a nation which had just got freed from soviet occupation,then you failed to get the entire territory under control for 2 decades and also secure the territory which you occupied resulting in troops loses ,and you failed to eliminate the group you were fighting against and you failed to diplomatically create a friendly /puppet state stable enough for 2 decades and failed to change the mindset of people to be friendly,and you withdrew in a shameful way leaving military equipment this creating a bad reputation and legacy for your future allies ,that was a image lose even IF it wasn't a military one

In the end when the Afghan people saw they had a chance, Taliban out recruited the ANA, this tells me that America never had popular support, and ANA only started out way larger due to the initial supremacy the US had over the region when it first invaded
@TheDirtysouthfan
@TheDirtysouthfan Күн бұрын
The Taliban weren't popular either, but they were a functional organization. The Afghan government was rife with corruption and was dysfunctional due to terrible leadership. People actually invited the Taliban to their towns to settle disputes and try criminal cases because the national government was so slow moving and unresponsive. You could argue that for a country with such lower literacy, a modern style judiciary isn't appropriate, but that argument is over. The Afghan Leader, Ashraf Ghani, for whatever reason, didn't seem to comprehend how dire things actually were until it was too late. On the day the Taliban started their offensive he was in some meeting with Attorney Generals over judicial disputes. Many soldiers complained that they knew how to fight and win the war but the Ministry of Defense got in the way. Meanwhile the Taliban learned from their mistakes. They spent time making connections with tribal leaders in the North who previously had strongly resisted them. These connections in turn led them to use them to convince soldiers not to fight back. They moderated their positions on the other ethnicities in Afghanistan.
@JusticeforHind
@JusticeforHind 23 сағат бұрын
@TheDirtysouthfan which just proves that sharia is far more effective in establishing order, Afghanis knew this despite perhaps not liking the Taliban very much. Thank you for the context, and I agree that Afghanistan seems to have suffered from ethnic tensions in the past so I can definitely see at least reaching out to those groups as an effective strategy. I have learned many new things about this conflict now, thank you

Amazing that this "war" lasted this long...cost untold billions (trillions worldwide) and yet the American people never really knew the truth of just how badly the war was going...to see the enemy with such troop numbers etc...one wonders just how badly misspent all them billions were...and every president (Republican and Democrat alike) were to blame for that failure. No one man can shoulder the blame considering how badly the situation was at the end. 20 years...such an abysmal failure and really showing of how weak American resolve really is.

Taliban were stretched too much by opposite side since it was expiriencing a civil war, but when the coalition got involved they were able to streamroll the taliban that following year when U.S announced an intervention in Afghanistan due to 9/11 terror attacks and evidence that Osama bin laden was in Afghanistan as a honored guest, but the coalition warned about still having Osama may lead to involvement which did happen which they used sheer numbers and advantages to counter the taliban and Islamist radicals, but resistance and the mountain terrain made it harder for the coalition to counter in the high mountain ranges & were unfamiliar to the terrain including having support from Pakistan with arms to the taliban which allowed the Taliban to re-enter Afghanistan later used other tactics like propaganda to recruit more fighters which was successful and slowly push the coalition away from the desert provinces in the south of Afghanistan which slowly encroach towards major cities. Coalition/intervention support in Afghanistan slowly went down when Osama Bin laden escaped to Pakistan due to unsuccessful operations to eliminate Osama Bin laden, but it's surprising that it lasted 20 years which after the war continues to stain in U.S military prowess. Even after the Soviets and British empire failed to put new governments or conquer the lands for politicial ideals and influence Including U.S. (This is all I know about the conflict)

America does war better than any other country when it comes head to head pound for pound, but when it comes to proxy wars with limited support (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan) America doesn’t achieve a lot of success with the exception of Iraq and was somewhat successful in Korea. The most they do is plant their flag for a period of time then leave when the political support runs out. The US used

its because you can still wage a very successful military campaign with a fraction of the US military budget when for instance a 250$ drone from temu can take out a 5 million dollar m1abrams tank. the Us military has more use today as government employment for millions of americans giving them education, training and healthcare than actually using it to invade third world countries. In a strange reversal, the USA is probably one of the few countries on earth that doesnt require a military at all. the entire population is already armed and its separated by two massive oceans with a free economy that nations want to do business with. the USA is almost certainly never going to be invaded so its kind of hard to justify the need of having such a massive one in the 21st century especially when wars like this cost trillions of dollars and go nowhere

@ nah bro 75%?? Do you know what 75% of the US military is lol. When we initially attacked Afghanistan we did it with 100,000 soldiers and very quickly occupied the vast majority of the country, then started withdrawing troops over time. When America finally withdrew from Afghanistan they only had a couple thousand soldiers there. Since the war on terror in 2001 started America has only lost about 7000 men. How many men have died fighting against the US coalition in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan? Talliban- 51,191. Iraq - 23,984. ISIS - 83,000.

@brendenstyre4784 21 сағат бұрын
@Þúǰfgʻ-ĺŵǰu7 90%? At the end of WW2 the American military was 16 million men strong. Only about 6 million Americans served in Korea which was very shortly after WW2 and there were only 33,700 American casualties while the Chinese and Koreans suffered millions. Your statement is false

Actually not true. The Communist Afghan government became a thing in 1978, with the Soviets intervening a year later, and it actually outlasted the USSR, finally falling in 1992, 3 years after the Soviets left. They had much better leaders in Najibullah, who was able to hold the core of the Afghan country together until one of his generals betrayed him. Even then, he wasn't completely overthrown but became part of a coalition government with the Mujahadin.

@TheDirtysouthfan
@TheDirtysouthfan 16 сағат бұрын
@ 1978 is when they came to power and when the fighting started. They struggled to put it down and begged the Soviets to come in, who were reluctant at first but then agreed to the next year. Then they came in, purged the unpopular nutjob who was dictator and installed a moderate, then began fighting the Mujahadin.
