Legal matters with the estates. Christopher Toklien, when he was alive, held the copyrights on all of his father's previously unpublished works, as he finished and edited and published them himself, after his father's death. He was not a fan of Peter Jackson's work at all, and I have a feeling he will be rolling over in his grave if he could see what Amazon's going to do with it. Since his death, however, I think his kids and grandkids don't care as much, and, as per usual, a lot more money minded, so the "estate" has been a little more loose handed with Tolkien's works, if the price is right, I'm sure they received more than a hefty sum from Besos and the boys at Amazon to use some of the works. However, I don't think they have yet sold ALL the rights from ALL the books to Amazon, so there are certain stories in the lore that Amazon doesn't have the right to touch, so hence the need for all the new characters and filler materials that will have to be added. Of course as fans, we can scream, "why don't they make movies out of all of them?" not understanding the legalities behind doing so.

Nerd of the Rings mentions a "Mithril Edition" of the movies and I think that would be nice. According to changes: Sauron one-shooting many soldiers at once is epic and really adds to his might while wearing The One Ring. Even though in the books this might was not neccessary in physical strength. The duel with Elendil and Gil-Galad could have been done better. We have to remember about limited screen time, so I think that simply showing combatants before and after the clash would fit best. Then Isildur would just cut the Ring out of Sauron's corpses finger. I see first shot with Gil-Galand, Elendil and Sauron captured while striking each other with mighty blows. Sauron with one hand extended in direction of Gil-Galad. Immidiately after that, second shot where all 3 corpses hit the ground. Gil-Galads corpse severely burned. Both shots employing epic light work and music. Simple, short and telling everything. Kinda similar to a comic book.

I don't mind it. You have to assume the audience of the movie has no idea who Gil-Galad, Anarion, Elendil, etc. are, and none of them are important to the rest of story. Having an epic battle between Sauron, Gil-Galad, Elendil in the beginning would look cool, but it wouldn't serve the story.

Extra extended edition for sure lol. It would've been amazing to see Elendil and Gil-Galad fight Sauron. But I get that PJ was trying to cover a quick history lesson, not get us attached to 2 characters who weren't even part of his main movie. Plus as the writers abd director say in the extras, just because they didn't show a 7 year siege doesn't mean it didn't happen. We just get the summed up version. However I believe the reason Sauron attempted to grab Isildur is because in their pre visual storyboards they had Sauron straight up kill Gil-Galad by grabbing his face and burning him to death. Sauron wanted to do that again, but, you know, chop chop. I could be remembering it wrong though, but that's why he does that. Would've made more sense to show that, but face melting is a pretty dark death and PJ didn't want a rated R film.
@sweeperboy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you make good points. Peter Jackson was also making films for a general audience, not specifically just for LOTR book fans. Too many characters and names perhaps would have been confusing to people who didn't know the books so well, so reducing Gil-Galad and Elendil's roles was probably done for that reason. And definitely, although there are decapitations in the LOTR films, face-melting is worse and he wanted to keep his films viewable by most (PG rated)

An extra extended edition please. The best adaptation of the war was to shorten the time frame since it's just a prologue"summary" anyway. The worst adaptation would be the character changes. That's what matters most in the story. Especially with Elendil's descendant having such a pivotal role to play.
@tannonheld53862 жыл бұрын
Ive discovered there is a split second of Gilgalad driving his spear into an orc in the prologue of lotr. Just before elendil raises his sword. Seems like he was filmed but cut out.

I'm glad you mentioned Oropher and Thranduil. I knew Oropher died early on, but I had no idea that he was so brash to go ahead of Gil-Galad's orders. Was there emnity between them, I wonder? I know the woodland elves were considered "lesser" elves, "less wise and more dangerous", but I'm wondering what compelled Oropher to make such a brash move.
@joels51502 жыл бұрын
Extra Extended Edition Please and Thank You. Biggest mistake of the changes IMO was having Sauron reaching for Isildur when the ring was cut off. WHY would Sauron have exposed himself like that when he was already in position to win?!? He could have just smashed him with the mace in his other hand. The books having Sauron already fallen when Isildur took it due to the heroic sacrifices of Gil’Galad and Elendiel is a much more reasonable explanation of the situation.

I'm happy with how they did it in the movies, it set up Sauron as more of a badass. Since he just came out and started decimating the alliance and when it looked like all hope was lost the lucky swing of Isildur to cut off the ring and defeat Sauron is way more epic than just him cutting it off when Sauron is just lying there. Also I do agree Gil Galad definitely should've been included in a meaningful way in the prologue, I feel like even with a few extra seconds added to the prologue they could've introduced him somehow since he was such an important Elf to the Lore. Aside from that its probably still my favorite prologue to any movie ever anyway!

Compressing events happened a lot in the films. The years Frodo spent in the Shire with the Ring, the months it took Frodo to leave the Shire, the weeks spent in Lorian, and this war. And to be fair, the movies are long enough, Peter Jackson had to do some compression and simplifying. And while a major and important war, that is not the focus of the film.

I think it’s to difficult to say which my favorite and least favorite changes are given how so many of the changes were to accommodate the medium of film. I do feel that the narration in the movies could’ve established that the siege took several years, and could’ve done a better job showing how Sauron was defeated instead of where it’s just Isildur blindly lashing out and getting a lucky swing that somehow cuts through plate and mail and bone right at the base of the knuckles. But while the story certainly misses something for it, the pruning and condensation of characters as well as leaving out the prolonged battle with Sauron were necessary for the sake of production and watchability. The same goes with the exposition being changed from a history lesson taught at the Council of Elrond to a prologue exposition dump at the start of the movie. It would’ve greatly interfered with the movie’s pacing if the history of the Last Alliance had been delivered at the same time it was in the books, since it’d take us away from the characters and story we’d already been following for a few hours to tell us the end of a different (albeit, not unrelated) story that had more or less resolved thousand of years prior. Such story telling decisions work in literature, yes, but including all of it in film would’ve been a nonstarter, considering one of the major criticisms of the films is how long they are. When you remember how much more could’ve been included from the books (Barrow Wights, Scouring of the Shire), you start to realize how difficult the decision to cut and simplify certain events must’ve been for production. For example, the movies never had the slower pacing of early Game of Thrones, so it wasn’t jarring to see in one scene, the Men of the West were preparing to march for the Black Gate, and by the next scene with them, they’d arrived, but later seasons of Game of Thrones were run through the wringer for having people and entire armies teleporting across continents, because GoT had established its pacing early on as slower and realistic, but then abandoned that deliberate pacing to rush the plot along. And there’re differences in pacing a TV show compared to a movie too, since a TV show can have more time to work with across multiple episodes, also allowing a slower pace so long as you have enough episodes with enough happening in any given one to keep the audience interested. Of course, that’s IF the series gets the budget and number of episodes it needs, and sometimes shows just don’t get renewed, in spite of quality, leaving things either rushed or unresolved.
@jeffreyburley40332 жыл бұрын
To create a movie as it is told in the books would be a huge undertaking, to say the least, and will probably never happen, ever. With that said, it is so important to not limit yourself to just the movies. So much has either been changed or left out only because of the immensity of the tale in written form. Therefore in order to live alongside this wondrous cast of characters and events, you should read all the books in their entirety. That includes the Silmarillion and the Hobbit and all should be read in the order the events occured, with the Silmarillion first, then the Hobbit and finish out with the trilogy. I do suggest reading this epic masterpiece at least once a year and continuing doing so until you feel you have become part of the story itself. Like all epic writings, one reading will never do.

An extended edition would be nice, but I believe it would still skip the Old Forest, Tom Bombadil, and the Barrow Downs 😞and use Arwen instead of Glorfindel at the Fords of Bruinen 👎. The worst from the action point of view was the lack of the epic duel between Gil-Galad, Elendil and Sauron. From a story point of view it was the lack of explanation that Isildur kept the ring as "payment" from Sauron for the loss of his father and brother. The movie kind of paints Isildur as misdirected as Boromir, when if fact he wasn't. Actually by the time of the ambush at the Gladden Fields he had already began to realize that Elrond and Cirdan were right and that he should have destroyed the ring, but by now it had become "precious" to him.

The movie version was phenomenal, however, I have to say that they did Elendil dirty, and even more so where Gil-Galad is concerned; the two of them literally threw down Sauron (who was in possession of his Ring and therefore at the height of his power) through sheer strength and skill. I know that it's a movie adaptation and certain changes necessarily have to be made to make it all a bit easier to follow, but the way they portrayed Sauron's defeat compared to the book version never really sat well with me. That said, the films will still always be my favourite movies of all time.
