Shooting Star Film Productions Ltd is proud to present a short sequence / Trailer adapted from H.G. Wells 1898 novel The War of the Worlds and inspired by Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds.
We have always been huge fans of science fiction and especially H.G. Wells, whose books are extraordinary in every way; but in particular The War of the Worlds which we are sure you will agree has to be one of the most famous science fiction stories ever written. This sequence was primarily made for fun and was a welcome break from our other productions. We have produced two versions of this sequence, one in colour & the other in black and white.
We have included numerous hat-tips to some of our favourite movies and TV shows within the sequence. Some are more obvious than others... can you spot them?
We hope you enjoyed the sequence and please feel free to comment below.
Please note we are not associated with any H.G. Wells Foundation or Publishers and we do not have any affiliation with Paramount or DreamWorks.
Here are some technical notes on the making of this sequence:
The inside shot was filmed on a Panasonic GH2 hacked; with one of driftwood's lower bit-rate patches (I forget which one) and a Voigtlander 25mm.
The design of the room was inspired by the David Fincher and Leonardo DiCaprio Red One low light Mysterium-X sensor test.
I modelled and textured everything except for the cars and Tripod, the Tripod was free from www.TurboSquid.com there is a link at the end of the description. Everything was modelled and animated with 3D studio max with a few bits done inside of Zbrush, this was all rendered with Mental Ray and shaded with the Arch&Design shaders, also the distant hills were done with e-on`s Vue.
All the compositing was done with discreet combustion (I know really really old! But it still works great) and all the camera tracking was done with Boujou.

Hi everyone, a lot of people are saying “it's been 3 years!” No it hasn’t... well it has, but two years had passed before we even decided to start on a second trailer. when we made this trailer that's all it was, it was just a trailer. There was never any intention for it to be anything more, but when we made it a lot of ideas came out of that process and we knew the copyright was about to expire, so about one year ago we decided to put all of our ideas down and see what we could do with it. It became evident that the best format for us would be the mini series and that's the path we are pursuing. For the last year we have been working on the script and budget, financing will most likely happen via kickstarter so multiple budgets are needed and that means multiple variations on the script, I'm sure most of you can appreciate that this is not an easy thing to do. So where's the second trailer I hear you ask, the short answer is “it's coming soon”. When we announced the mini series a year ago we had already started work on the second trailer but then the BBC announced their intentions to produce a mini series and not too long after MTV threw their hat in the game, so our focus has been placed on finishing the scripts and making it as good as we possibly can and unfortunately this has slowed the progress on the trailer considerably, but it is still being worked on and it's looking great!

The long shot from the puddle to the door was so well moving, far out in the distance watching as even an ant they can find with their lights, then panning to the one over the house while in the back showing the fluttering of falling meteors

Their main reason for defeat was despite having very advanced technology, they had never discovered that microscopic organisms exist in the possible thousands of years they had existed and were not prepared to be exposed to what planet Earth had to offer which their biology couldn't handle resulting in their inevitable fate.

Excellent! The main human character appeared to have been channelling H. G. Wells, Orson Welles, and Richard Burton all at the same time. "Richard Burton?", you ask. In 1977 Jeff Wayne created a musical version, a " rock opera" if you will, of The War Of The Worlds. I only heard of it a decade ago but it's been around since I was 4!!!

Literally just found out about this mini-series thanks to my love of Steven Spielberg's version of War of the Worlds. You basically took one of the best things about his movie, the Tripod design and took inspiration from the original Novel with how the Martians came from Outer Space. I’m more interested in this story than Steven Spielberg’s story. I like the way Spielberg made the tripods look but I wanted more action scenes of militaries around the world trying to fight them. Is this going to be an actual fan movie? Because I would watch this! I am a major fan of the War of the Worlds. Read the book when I was small (I was one of those kids who preferred Classic literature over kids books), pretended this one spider-like play structure at our old recess was a tripod, heard the Jeff Wayne musical many times, heard the original broadcast that caused people to panic, LOVED the designs of Steven Spielberg's Tripods (and that hauntingly gorgeous foghorn sound), made a fan story once (about a returning invasion just few days before Christmas, a kid trying to survive and find his lost sister through the invasion, and finding out H.G. Wells' book was meant as a warning about what these tripods can do because it actually happened and the British kept silent about it. I am not a superb writer, just a what-if writer), in short, huge fan! But yeah, loved the ending of it. As I point to the narrator and shout "Behind you!! Look behind you!!" And I cannot wait for the finished product if it is a full movie!

Coming from a very obsessive and particular War of the Worlds fan, you have made me very happy. I used to get fussy over how the movies aren't accurate in some ways and praising them for other artistic liberties, but when it comes down to it they're all The War of the Worlds and are made by people who love the story just as much as the next fan. That can be appreciated and understood. This video made me want to watch all the films and read the book again. More than that it only further fuels my interest in tackling making the film independtly myself (and cheaply). You have done so well, I applaud how you have composited and rendered all the footage and different elements. If you wanted to you could pitch this and get funding to make a full film yourselves, whether it be HG Well's classic or something else. This almost had a strange dreamy nightmare quality to me, which only made me emapthise for the character more feeling that hopelessness in a strange and dangerous new world that you could hardly believe is real. Something I think is a strong feeling to express in the story. Really, I enjoyed this a little too much. Subscribing, because if you can impress a War of the Worlds fan like myself, then no doubt you will go on to entertain me and many others with your future projects. Cheers! Wish you all the best!

This really had that sort of eerie feel to it. I would hate to be in a neighborhood desolate like that with those things around. I liked the sound effects fo the heat ray. That was pretty cool. And don't even get me started on the visuals... You all should have been on steven Spielberg's team for War of the Worlds! This was just incredible! PLEASE come out with more in the future. Very nice work guys, and several homages to past versions of the genre. I wish it were a fully fledged move. I think I loved it even more when I heard the air raid siren in the background. "Moaning Mini" I think my Mother called it. She remembered it from living through "the Blitz". I haven't heard it personally since I was last in England in 1968. I was twelve at the time, an Air Force brat, and raised on Cold War paranoia. It scared the daylights out of me, until my Aunt's neighbor told me that they used it then with a search light for fires. I think that was the closest I've ever come to panicking and running screaming into the night. The fellow doing the introductory narration from H. G. Wells "The War of the Worlds" was quite good. Although, I still think Richard Burton's version in the Jeff Wayne Musical adaptation is the best I have heard. That was the three lense Martian probe from the 1953 George Pal movie sidelling up behind the narrator wasn't it? Best of luck in your future endeavours. templerman aka William York

I've been wanting a sequel/spinoff to 2005's war of the worlds since I was young. Even though there are some fantastic and terrifying scenes in the film, it felt too short and rushed towards the ending. A miniseries would be an answer to my 10 year old prayers! Thank you so much!
