Brazil's right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro is overseeing a violent crackdown on criminal gangs and the police have been told to do it regardless of the dangers to innocent people who live in the favelas where the gangs operate.
Across the political and charity spectrum, people are questioning the tactics and the benefits of such an unregulated and unchecked campaign of violence.
Sky's Stuart Ramsay meets the drug gangs in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and discovers how innocent people are getting caught in the crackdown.

they only show rio de janeiro to do political propaganda and denigrate the country's image. "Sociologist journalist" cannot differentiate between carioca, paulista, gaucho, mineiro, baianos; people with regional culture, demography, accent and different reality. Continental country but there is only Rio de Janeiro for the "Anglo-Saxon intellectual". Perhaps showing the civilized side of Brazil is not convenient for political propaganda, that's why America hides that Santos Dumont is pioneer in aviation, and dozens of other scientists, doctors and engineers brazilians after all, it is absurd for such a repulsive and savage people like brazilians to contribute to humanity, only America takes humanity forward

@Euclid Avenue 68,000 people were killed in Brazil one year. Chicago had 750+ dead one year, that's almost 1/68 of what Brazil homicide rate is at the highest recorded known number. In Chicago over 2000 people are shot every year with crippling effects of the wounds, its as if they were dead or wish they were dead. That's 3/68 of what Brazil experiences in a city of a couple million. The USA has homicide rate of 35,000 killed each year. Its comparable.

As a brazilian myself, it saddens me to see how Rio have become. I'm from the south of Brazil and to be honest where I was born and raised is really safe like any other city in Europe or EUA. Rio is just a very tiny small place in Brazil where those things happen. Brazil is not just Rio, but as Rio is the most famous city of Brazil foreigners think that the whole Brazil is Rio, and what happen in Rio is common in every part of Brazil and that's not true! mich w in my experience traveling, which is a lot, I have found the same to be true. These dopey reporters can’t get past their immature reveling in how cool it is that they are there, with those people. I have images of Guadalcanal or the Tet offensive. This isn’t to minimize the problem, there are real, serious problems, which is why we don’t need the conjecture of reporters to be able to grasp the actual issues. Intelligent people, I would hope, would respond to the depth of the issues, rather than the exciting sounds of gunfire, and relentless adjectives and pointing at areas where scary things happen.

I use to live in Rio. In one neighbourhood, we lived close to Vidigal, a favela. They sometime contact the residents living close the favela, to give warning about future shootings in or near the favela (and hence residents living in the line of fire just outside the favela), so that we could plan accordingly. They call this "A boca da favela" (the mouth of the favela) where drug sales are rampant. But favelas are also areas of residence for many cariocas. A society within a society, neglected by the state.

This documentary didn’t cover the militias that are deeply envolver with the bolsonaros family and are now inside the government as never before. The militias are the same as the other gangs, just are helped by the government. People can lie with those number of 19% or whatever, but everyone knows, the situations is the same, and it’s going to get worse.

I'm from Rio. I love my city but we live in a war zone. We lose so many people daily that the news won't even report on that anymore. But what makes Rio violent is our stupid anti drug policy. If drugs were decriminalized police wouldn't have to go up the favelas to kill and be killed. WE MUST END THE WAR ON DRUGS!
