Tau are fun in the lore because they're SO naive to the horrors of the galaxy. Theres a story of one who was convinced if he could just talk to orks he could make them allies diplomatically. He spent years decoding and learning their language, went to a battlefield, spoke to a couple of Boyz who laughed and though it was really funny that someone so puny was speaking their language before beating him to death while still laughing. They defeated a space marine chapter master on the battlefield and thought he was so powerful that they must have killed this emperor everyone has been talking about. They also analyzed a dreadnought and found out the warrior inside was older than their entire civilization. Their first encounter with the Dark Eldar ended in an entire planet's population being taken as slaves to Commoragh.
@Knight-Bishop3 ай бұрын
That's my argument for why they still fit in the Grimdark: they are not a threat population-wise, yet they are too technologically accelerationist to be ignored. They themselves aren't grimdark _now,_ they are a vehicle to watch in real time how the horror and corruption would break down anyone hopeful showing up to it.

The Aeldari and the Krorks were created by the old ones to be mages (Aeldari) and foot soldiers (Krorks) to fight the Necrons and the C'tan. The Krorks multiplied and thrived on combat, born with inherent knowledge to fulfill all the roles needed for a conventional warfare based society. The Aeldari were uniquely in tune with the warp and master artisans, giving them incredible abilities. The Necrons beat the shit out of the old ones and the Krorks and the Aeldari, and when they turned on the C'tan to kick the shit out of them, the Aeldari had time to recover and the Krorks were doing Krork things. The Necrons were weakened, saw the writing on the wall, and peaced out for a bit. The Aeldari turned their attention to the Krorks who were already devolving without an enermy other than themselves and the Aeldari, and the Aeldari went on a big campaign to erradicate the Krorks/Orks. Through reducing their numbers and not having the War in Heaven, the Krorks devolved into hooligans. The Aeldari murderfucked their way through the next 50-60 million years. Not an "um akshuly", this is just a part of the timeline that I like.

Tau castration "depends on the author." The Tau ending in Dark Crusade mentions them putting sterilizing agents in the water supply, in addition to "single-gender reeducation programs" but I think that's the most overt reference to them doing such, and can largely be seen as a larger tone shift of Tau going from unironically good guys to "maybe they're sussy after all" Basically, if they do it, it's done in a subtle way as to maintain plausable deniability. "I don't know why the humans aren't making babies, but now that all these houses are empty..."

31:30 I think the main confusion around this is due to a story point in the game Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. The backstory for the game is that an imperial world fell under the dominion of the T'au (as many imperial worlds on the border of T'au space do), and then the Imperium sends a taskforce to reconquer it, and a bunch of other factions coincidentally turn up at the same time, so you can play as all the factions in-game. If you play as the T'au, then at the end of the campaign the narrator talks about how the world was resettled and became a staging point for the next great phase of T'au expansion in that sector, but they sent a bunch of those dissident imperial citizens who sided with the Imperium to re-education camps and man, the birthrates kinda... went all the way down afterwards, for no clear reason. In fact within a couple generations there basically weren't any humans left... weird." Basically, the T'au don't sterilize human citizens as a matter of course, but they are 100% the kind of empire that will go "we're not going to genocide the locals for rebelling, we're more civilised than that, we'll just re-educate them and encourage them to emigrate elsewhere in the empire, and maybe slip some infertility chemicals in the municipal water supply when no-one's looking to speed up the depopulation process. You know, like civilised people."

An elaboration on the Old Ones/Chaos Gods/C'tan/Warp... at least from my understanding: The Warp - a parrellel metaplane formed from the emotions of everyone in the galaxy. It is the Spirit World. Chaos Gods - personifications of powerful emotions in the Warp. Khorne is Hate, Nurgle is Dispair, Slaanesh is Joy, Tzzench is Hope(Ambition). The Aeldari gods (like Khaine) are also Warp deities. Old Ones - Not "gods" but just a highly advanced, very magically powerful race. C'tan - Physical "Gods" in the vein of Cthulhu Mythos. They have an allergy to Warp energies, which is why they teamed with the Necrons to fight the Old Ones : anti-magic vs magic

What's amusing is that the most recent original flavour Slaan/Old One models to be made were a team in Blood Bowl of all places.
@Carrisonfire13 ай бұрын
Mostly yes, a few corrections: Warp - formed from emotion and thought (including subconscious). Before the War in Heaven F'd the galaxy it was known as the Sea of Souls, within which was the Realm of Chaos. War in Heaven caused the Realm of Chaos to essentially absorb the rest of the warp and become intertwined with eachother. Chaos Gods - They're more like manifestations of concepts, Khorne is War & Murder. Nurgle is Disease, Decay & acceptance, his daemons are very jolly, playing music, singing and dancing while speading their rot. Slaanesh is Excess of any emotion or feeling, think Hellraiser. Tzeench is Change, which includes hope because you typically hope for a change (hope for a cure to disease would actually empower Nurgle) but it really encompasses any change, physical, societal or symbolic. C'Tan - Didn't team with the Necrons, they enslaved the Necrontyr and turned them into robot slaves to act as their army. They are the so called "Gods of Real Space" as opposed to the Gods of the Warp. They also represent concepts, such as the Nightbringer is death (literally, he ingrained himself as the image of death in every sentient species). Void Dragon is oblivion (true nothingness). Can you guess what Deceiver is? lol Ork Gods - Because Orkz iz da bezt. They have Gork and Mork. Gork is brutal but cunning, Mork is cunning but brutal. They are endlessly fighting eachother in the Warp.

It was amazing. You don't need to worry about getting anything wrong,(like you mentioned around the 1:30:00 mark, I just hope that you guys are having fun with it that is the most important part. However, if you or anyone is interested, in some of my rambling. I would like to give my answer the mint question "there is war everywhere?will I find children and stuff?" The answer is YES. In fact there are many, many planets inside the Imperium that are very peaceful and never saw a alien even less suffer the horrors of endless war, there are planets that are called literally "paradise worlds". In fact is a staple of 40k that even in the worst situation humanity manege to live, in deep of babel size slum that is a Hivecity, to between the machinery of the Forgeworlds or the training camps of what was once Cadia. There are children, families, laughter and love. However is also a world filled with "GRIMDARKNESS", with the war, suffering, disease, pain, incompetence, hunger, betreyal, etc. And being the main attraction is also where we spend most of our times, following the great human heroes of imperial soldiers to superhuman heroes with spacemarine and primarchs. This mean that we don't get to see or talk about the average nice world that made most of it, that is not very difference between modern earth but now having to pay space taxes to far away galatic empire. As for the 2nd part, where Mint say that she got confused between 29k and 40k. Here my take on it. - During the Humanity Golden Age, they created the AI and spread to most galaxy, imagine super star trek. - The rebellion of their AI (Man of Iron) and the fact that Warp Travel(FTL) was closed off because Slaneshee was about to be born, meant the destruction of the human empire. (there is also the start to show up psykers that don't know they had a hell portal in their mind, that caused even more problems) - Everything was destroyed, earth was reduced to Madmax wasteland where even their sea was gone. - The Emperor, the strongest human wizard, fought against all the gangs that lived on earth for the unificaiton of Earth and the Solar System, so humanity can return to the galaxy. - He had a problem the chaos gods took his 20 sons and spread them around the galaxy as secret collectables. - Joining hand with the survivors of mars, that would become the cult mechanicus. And armed with his supersoldiers the spacemarines, he did the "GREAT CRUSADE" to conquer back the whole galaxy. - He almost succeded, he already conquered more than half of the galaxy. He found his demi-gods sons to help him. - That when the Horus Heresy started and half of theses sons decided to rebel including the favorite son HORUS. That destroyed much that was build, killed billions of people, hundreds of planets are destroyed and even some Primarch died, other sold their soul to the Demon Gods. It was a Clusterfuck. - In the end the loyalist half won, and drove back the traitors and their armies. - After that most primarchs mysterious left, and human are finally ruled only by humans. No Emperor, no supersoldier or super son. However they decided to whorship the emperor despite he stating repeatable to not do that(the dark irony). - Many years pass, before a particualary Evil Pope almost broke the imperium, they decided to create the "sister of battle" because the rules "They shall have no man bear arms". - From there on they got even more zealots and crazy about the emperor and many threat that had almost been destroyed during the "Great Crusade" are back. - The Demon Gods and their cultist are terrorizing the planets and inciting revolt. - The traitor priamarch and their super soldiers that sold their soul to demons are also terrorizing eveyrhting, now backed by army of demons. - The aliens old threat like the Orks and Necrons are many times more powerful than before and awakening faster and faste - While if inside the galatic threat isn't enough, Tyranids the galatic bugs that eat all biomass and even the planet core arrived and are eating everything Orks, humans, demons, they don't care. And Their numbers are almost endless and they can spawn more in just a few hours what humans take years to prepare, train and arm. - With the fall of cadia, things got worse, because now beside all that there is a Portal to Hell the size of a galaxy wound and demons and traitors are pouring out like water and they too want to fuck with everything. - Humanity and the Imperium is holding by the skin of their teeth, fighting a losing battle against overwhelming odds and impossible foes from beyond the galaxy and reality. While inside their self mutilating tatics to gain time are less and less effective the quality, number and competence of soldiers and generals are decreasing day by day while the enemy grow stronger and in number. In this dark future, there is only war. But the humanity holding nothing but sheer spite had hold the line against it for 10k years and will hold the line until the very end. Like when cadia fell and the planet was exploding, the humans there didn't stopped fighting.

The Horus Heresy is way to dense to boil it down to a few minutes, but just to clarify: the heresy begins way before Sanguinius is killed, that actually is one of the last things that happens. The reason its such a big deal is Horus was actually the favorite son, not Sanguinius (who was however very loved by the citizens.) He is ultimately tricked by Chaos into turning, and then brings 8 other primarchs with him. Also Space Marines are all made from a gene seed of the primarch, so they are the "sons of the sons of the emperor" and are genetic super soldiers even more powerful than Spartans in Halo.

To answer Mint's questions about the different worlds, Humans live on plenty of worlds living their everyday life, unless there is a chaos cult or a gene stealer cult. There are also several different kinds of world people can live on like hive cities which is one humongous wide and tall city that can house billions of people. There are agriworlds where every parcel of arable land is dedicated to farming. There are also Paradise/Pleasure worlds which are the only ones worth living on as they are beautiful and serene worlds but only the 0.1% actually get to visit there. There are other worlds people can live on but the main gist is that most humans live peaceful lives unless they are near a warfront. Addendum: Earth is also kind of a holy site considering that is where the emperor is and needs to import basically everything including water. There is no more water on earth because they used it all like 10,000 years ago
I would say Drukhari less arrogant and more sadistic superiority complex.
@kingskelett62653 ай бұрын
@@mrksimka1159 oh no definitely arrogant. They just have sadistic superiority complex on top of that. But there is a lot of arrogance. Both for eldar and in warhammer in general.

Compared to Humans who aren't arrogant at all and want to share the galaxy peacefully with other races 😇 For real though, it gets pretty to silly to call Eldar 'arrogant' as if they're somehow unique in that lol.

@@Ninjaguiden89 Yeah, humans are arrogant in their own right, but the Aeldari as a species are defined in part by how they think all other races are inferior to them.

I think this was a really good attempt at a beginner summary. I would only add a few tiny details. The Old Ones were not gods, just a race of reeeeally power psyker frog/lizard people, and the reason they didn't help the Necrontier was because they didn't want a cure, they wanted THE CURE, they wanted immortality. That want of immortality is how the star gods (C'tan) tricked and enslaved the Necrons. Quick T'au lore from a player of T'au since 2001 lol... 34k they were discovered as a tribal people just mastering fire. About the time they had castles and blackpowder the tribes almost wiped each other out. Then one day a mysterious 5th tribe showed up and somehow got everyone to stop fighting and just do what they say... for... reasons, I mean the Greater Good. Then in 40k they are rediscovered and now they have gundams and anyone can join them.

Typical the happy medium with the first 3 Chaos gods creation, is that they were created during the War in Heaven but didn’t fully manifest and gain self awareness until 1,500 AD. This is way humanity shaped the 3 original Chaos gods mythos, as the Eldar were feeding Slaanesh (who herself wouldn't fully manifest and gains self awareness until 25,000-29,000 ad based on source). While the Orks were feeding Gork and Mork, who long existed before this. Since Humanity had the greatest unclaimed population. Now remember the Emperor was alive before the Chaos gods gained consciousness... this is why he was so deadset on his great crusade QUICKLY conquering the galaxy (and willing to risk certain primarchs). He probably suspected they were about to act, as he was aware of them slowly caring more and more about the material relm and not just the warp. As he saw galaxy before they truly gained consciousness, so saw their influence slowly gaining.

I haven't read many 40k books but I have consumed quite a bit of content about it so I am gonna try to add a little more info for anyone interested in diving on more lore: -There is no official art of how the necrontyr(when they had flesh bodies) looked like before becoming necrons(now metal bodies) with the biotransference, the picture showed on 10:16 has 2 dudes, the one on the left is a different race(the tau) and the one on the right is a fan art of the necrontyr. -Necrons don't have souls becquse the C'tan ate those, their conciusnes is basically data in supercomputers having better supercomputers the higher the rank. -The reason why the krorks devolved was because of infithing and if I'm not wrong at some point a krork somehow arrived to 40k and was leading orks but got killed as far as I know, so they should be extinct by now but there are always ways to bring more back. -The necrons don't have magic like the other races because they have no souls, but their technology is so advanced that what they do looks like magic because of how absurd it may appear to everyone else. -After the necrons became slaves to the C'tan, they genocided(all of them as far as it is known) the old ones and later when the C'tan were weakened by fithing the eldari and krorks the necrons rebeled against the C'tan , shattered them in fragments and use them as batteries and for war, necrons suffered a lot and went to sleep. -The dark age of technology is when IA went mad and started killing humanity hence the fear for AI. -The theories about the emperor of humanity are mainly because he is the most powerful psyker in the imperium so he pulls the odin trick like disguising into whatever he wants so who knows what he looks like and where his powers originally com from. -During horus heresy a big device was overloaded and basically called in the tyranids which arrived a lot later I believe. -Slaneesh is the youngest god but also not necessarily because the warp doesn't obey the laws of physics so like the 4 chaos gods have kind of always been there in a strange sense. In case I got anything wrong or not up to date please do correct me.
@redhawk7473 ай бұрын
Generally speaking, the big hole in the universe is called the Eye of Terror. It was caused by the fall of the eldari and the birth of Slaneesh, the 13th black crusade just originated from it and somewhat expanded it

52:34 so they sell something for each army called a "combat patrol" which is meant to be a relatively inexpensive start to an army. Generally it's a leader, a centerpiece (like a vehicle or monster or elite) and 2-3 troops. Generally they are $120, with varying bang for your buck. Plus they are a complete, playable army, using the combat patrol ruleset, with slightly altered statblocks, abilities and objectives. But it's an introduction army and a way to start your collection generally cheaper than buying the same minis piecemeal.

I haaate being the "Well ackshually" guy, but i think Mata and Mint and others might find it interesting. During the war in heaven the Aelderi and Krorks did fight, they were made for it. Which is a bit i like since it explains why the Krorks devolved since fighting was never that intense again and Orks grow with fighting. It also explains how silly Orks are, theyre basically jury rigged soldiers for a war thats long since over.

Also, during the War of the Beast, when the Ork’s started to evolve back into Krork’s, the Ork’s surpassed humanity in terms of technology and matched humanity in strategy and diplomacy. They were only stopped by Vulkan sacrificing himself to disrupt the Ork’s waagh energy.

52:31 To provide a possible answer for Mint's question: Imperial Knights can be one of the cheapest armies to field. When I bought two of them, about a year or so ago, they cost ~$157, each, and 4 of them would fill out a standard strength army. That comes to about $628, before assembly and painting costs.

52:47 on the price of entering the hobby, it comes down to game size. Standard games are 2000 points. But, if you can organise smaller point games (such as 500 points, 1000 points, 1500 points), it has a cheaper early investment. the cheapest armies to get into are Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, and Grey Knights. Imperial/Chaos Knights have some expensive kits, but they are large models with h9gh point costs. Many of their kits are also interchangeable. You can build a full 2000 point Grey Knights army with 4 Grey knight combat patrol boxes

Love this episode, though one correction: StarCraft was never originally a WH40K game. That is an old misconception. StarCraft is the sci-fi counterpart to WarCraft, which is in fact the game that was most likely originally going to be a Warhammer Fantasy game before changing. This is further backed up by the fact that the 1996 build of StarCraft only had Zerg and Protoss. Only after the '96 BlizzCon critique that StarCraft was "just WarCraft in space" (it used the WC2 engine) were the Terrans added in the 1997 build and onward. Had it been a WH40k clone, the Terrans would have been there from the start.

The best way to get into warhammer lore, is in my opinion watching TTS. Yes they take some liberties for the sake of humor, but remember that the first season is literally just kitten explaining everything that has happened since the heresy to the emperor. The factions, the events, etc. It’s actually a really good show to watch if you are trying to get a baseline understanding of the world of 40k.

- 0:43:13 - Pan's Labyrinth (original title: The Labyrinth of the Faun) is a fantasy horror movie directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Mint doesn't think it's scary, even though it combines the brutality of the Spanish Civil War with a monster that looks like something from Silent Hill. 😱 - 0:52:22 - Matara doesn't want to say how expensive the Warhammer miniatures can be. 💰🤑 - 1:18:00 - Matara says the Adepta Sororitas are the "Guns with Nuns." 🔫🔄✝🤣 - 1:24:28 - Mint wonders why Warhammer's world is so brutal and terrifying. From what I understand, Warhammer is originally a tabletop RPG featuring low fantasy as opposed to high fantasy (i.e. less The Lord of the Rings, a lot more Conan the Barbarian). Warhammer 40,000 (which may have begun as a joke) assumes that the same universe continues through the modern era and into the far future, so the same human and Chaos factions are still warring, only now they have spaceships and laser weapons in addition to swords and magic. I hope this helps describe the series, although Matara explains Warhammer 40K way better than this humble servant of Slaanesh. ⚔💢🩸 Thank you for the podcast, Mint and Matara! 🌿👻🪳

Hey Mint, models are not cheap but it's only really a huge problem if you want to play the tabletop game. Even then there's ways to run very small armies. But if you only/mostly care about the modeling aspect, just get what seems cool. The thing with the tabletop is that many units have certain allowed squad sizes, and one squad will take up one "slot" in your army. So you'll end up with multiple squads of 10+ of the same model. If you don't care about the tabletop game, you don't have to buy, assemble, and paint 40+ space marines or whatever. You could just get one box of dudes of that type and be done with it. Also what's really frustrating is that some boxes of models and their rules end up with the 'hot dogs and buns problem' Where the number of a unit in a box doesn't line up at all with the valid squad sizes I know there's some kind of walker-mech thing where the smallest allowed squad is 3 but they come in packs of 2 If all you care about is assembling and painting some cool models, then you don't need to bother with that
