BAND-MAID shook up the rock world for me with the release of their very first video "Thrill" in 2015 which has over 18 million views so far. Suddenly i wasn't sad anymore that there was no more fresh music from my rock heroes like The Beatles, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Rush and many more. BAND-MAID brought a new perspective and a much fresher sounding "classic rock" to my ears and I instantly fell in love with them. there has not been a single day since discovering BAND-MAID in 2016 that I have not listened to their music. a couple of years ago i discovered The Warning and once again I was blown away so you have no idea how happy it made me to see and hear that BAND-MAID and The Warning are fans of each other and even publicly said they would love to do a collab of some sort. my dream concerts would be to see The Warning open for BAND-MAID in Japan and BAND-MAID open for The Warning in Mexico. such incredible talent!! thanks for the awesome, well thought out and presented video of these 3 talented bands. BAND-MAID the best in the east and The Warning the best in the west and to Lilliac keep working hard, you have lots of talent and are still getting better and thanks for keeping rock alive!

Fun fact: Rick Beato is a close friend of David Bendeth who produced The Warning's Error album. I like Band-Maid and I am familiar with some of Liliac's original music, but I think the first exposure I had to them was their covers. They are excellent musicians and I have no doubt that they can play just about anything but they may have done themselves a disservice by doing so many covers early on, so much so that a lot of people may only know about their covers. In the case of Liliac and The Warning, being kids playing covers was the schtick that propelled them forward. Now that they have outgrown that it is time to advance their careers on the merits of their musical talents. The strength of both Band-Maid and The Warning is their large catalog of original music. In both cases they made a conscious decision to do original music to the exclusion of virtually anything else. It's a gamble when a band is unknown but in both cases, it has worked out well. Even so, in The Warning's case, they did a cover of Enter Sandman with Alessia Cara and within their community Pau and Dany individually share some impressive acoustic covers from time to time.

Excellent comment, Elgon, and I agree completely.
@denisle13

Rick really dissed Band-Maid because of excessive compression in mastering which is out of their hands and extremely unfair! I do wish you or someone influential would reach out and have him give the newer songs a listen, and for more than production value. they are magnificent and deserve much better than they received! I am just another old (70) musician who has been transfixed by the talent this band exemplifies. And a proponent of fairness in opinion derivation!
@williamburkholder769
@williamburkholder769 8 ай бұрын
@@denisle13 Rick is all about production on his channel, and is not a fan of over-produced audio. I don't think he totally dissed the band. I follow him a lot, and really learned a lot from him about audio over the years. He is usually right about things like audio processing. Whether something like excessive compression is "out of their (Band Maid's) hands" is debatable. It depends on their recording contract. The Warning negotiated a contract with Lava that gives them relative creative freedom. David Bendeth said that working with them under those terms was quite the experience, because he'd never met young people with such energy and determination. The dynamic among them was difficult, but rewarding. They all learned a lot! And the sound of The Warning got MUCH better, quite quickly, especially live. The jury is still out about Anton DeLost, the producer of their forthcoming album, *Keep Me Fed…* There is an Easter Egg on a single frame of the video of *S!CK* that puts his name on a gravestone.

There is considerable overlap between bandmaid and warning fans. And the bands themselves know and respect each other. I discover The Wanning and Band-Maid the same year (2021) i'm mexican so i first tought that the Villareal sisters would become my favorite, but after checking out the whole discographies of both bands, I couldn't help but fall in love with the complexity, heavy and yet very catchy composition the maids have since "The Unseeen World" album, On the other hand I do enjoy solid and refined Hard Rock like the "Error" album, especially considering that The Warning are "just" a tri-pieces band, I'm not saying that the Villareal sistera can't write more complex songs, "Queen of the Murder Scene" is a solid proof of that, it is my personal preference for what this two bands offer nowdays. Also the charisma and dinamic between their members in both bands are very funny to follow on and out satge, is very obvious that they are sisters, one for blood, the other for been stuck together for 10 years. I truly believe thatt The Warning will have a major growth in the years to come, they are 10 years younger, the majority of his songs are written in full English, have an "american" record label, and they have only 3 full albums released and that is a awesome thing, as a rock fan i couldn't be more happy for discovered both bands and be more enthusiastic about what will they deliverer in the future 🤟🏼

I will see almost 20 bands in 2 weeks. 95percent female and all rock and metal. the psychology of why Japanese women have turned my music world upside down is interesting to me. my friends dumb it down to a fetish. I do not believe it is. to me the music ranging from pop rock right to metal core with harsh vocals is amazing. I never liked growling vocals before but sure do now from these bands. I'm old. I've loved rock/metal, and music in general, all my life. No band has ever grabbed my heart and my checkbook like Band-Maid has. And I'm not some creeper otaku; if I closed my eyes I would have the same opinion. They are brilliantly creative musicians and their music just speaks to me. But their delightful personalities, and the mutual love and respect between them and their fans put them over the top. I know maybe 5 words of Japanese, but for me language is no barrier at all. Band-Maid absolutely went the extra mile during the pandemic by continuing to connect with fans, give online concerts, new releases etc. As another commenter said, I just feel so proud of them as human beings. And the added bonus is the fanbase: apart from the very few bad apples common to any fandom, the Madiacs are the coolest and most welcoming group I've ever been associated with, some of whom I'm now proud to call friends. I also like the Warning a lot, and probably need to circle back to Liliac, but so far they have not grabbed me the same way.

There is nothing wrong with liking things that happen to be Japanese. I think there is a lot of bigotry towards Japan. Especially online. Anyone who says that to my face comes to regret it. This guy at work mocked me for liking Babymetal. Oh you have an opinion? I talked to him about Babymetal until he wanted to die. He thought I'd be afraid of him because he was 350 pounds. I'd kick his ass if it came to that.

The Warning nos une. The Warning for ever.

I'm a Band-Maid fan first, but also love The Warning (btw, they are also friends who met each other for the first time at Aftershock '22). I think there are different reasons why people are bigger fans of one band over another. Speaking for myself, the criteria come down to song quality, strength of melodic hooks and riffs, but also a more complex layering that gives your brain a workout as well as your heart. Perfect accessibility of lyrics, personalities, dress, etc. are secondary. Kanami Tono is a genius songwriter, and if the members of Band-Maid were all men (or toddlers or cats), if the lead guitarist had the songwriting skills of Kanami, I'd still have all their records.

My number 1 band is Band Maid and number 2 is The Warning. I haven't listened to rock music in years, except for the radio. I personally am tired of all the old bands from the 70's and 80's. Needed something new. Band Maid's outfits are from Miku a "contrast" I believe she means that you see a maid or Jpop looking band and hear hard rock. You noted that in your analysis. The Warning are just "that damn good", I've seen then twice now and loved every minute. I would go see either of them in a heartbeat. Band Maid a little tougher to get to. The Warning are one of the few bands to put out a theme album, like Rush and The Who. Queen of the Murder scene is extremely good, especially for the age they were when they wrote it. I am devoted to both band and can't wait for their future music.

Hey Nena! Awesome analysis as always!! Love to hear your take on all things Rock!! I like all three of these bands. I am a MASSIVE fan of The Warning, to the pint I will probably be seeing them 6 or 7 times in the span of a year and a half!! I will also be seeing Band-Maid for the first time in May and I am So EXCITED. Liliac is a great band and those kids are extremely talented! It seems like they have still been trying to find their own sound, and I look forward to their new album coming out! Finding The Warning in late 2018 gave me hope for a great new generation of Rock! I had not listened to new music in decades because it all sounded so stale and commercially produced, with feeling, passion or soul. I grew up through the 70s and 80s and miss all that great music! The Warning gave me hope and also opened me up the amazing fanbase! Other Warning fans introduced me to Band-Maid, Liliac, and all the amazing new Japanese bands! Even Indian and Indonesian bands like Bloodywood and Voice of Baceprot! I am now inspired by new Rock and it has made a difference in my life for the better. Thanks again, Nena! Rock On!!

Why do The Warning stand out to me? How much time do you have? 😂 Well, they scratch every itch for me from an art perspective. First, lyrically. I come from an artistic family, but got none of the visual arts or musical talent that runs through my relatives. I do seem to have the ability to express myself through the written word though, and Pau’s lyrics have always struck a chord with me. Whether it is her story telling, or her ability to question the narrative status quo, she has my undivided attention. She has the ability to thrill me like Poe, make me think like Shakespeare and spin a tale like Hank Williams. Second, their compositional skills are second to none. I have not seen a group of siblings that are capable of such arrangements and original melodic storytelling since the Brothers Gibb in the 1970s. The three of them are magical composers (perhaps due to their very early training in classical music). The way they harmonize their instruments, as well as their vocals adds weight and grounds their songs. Their music is simply entrancing. Third, their moral character is to this point, beyond reproach. By the way, I am not saying the other two bands lack moral character. All of us are human, and will at times fail in our interactions with each other. Dany, Pau and Ale have a singular minded focus when it comes to dealing with others. They are kind to a fault. They NEVER speak ill of people people they have worked with, or spent time with (even those ass hats at Sphere Studios, may they burn in hell!). They find the good in others, and in every situation and are always looking to uplift those around them. This philosophy is so engrained in them, that when public adversity finds them, the reaction has always been “a smile, a laugh and a nod at the situation”. I have never seen them roll their eyes at an inane question. They have not stormed off stage or out of a gig because the situation was less than ideal. They have not blamed a roadie or a venue for equipment failures. They are the embodiment of the Golden Rule, they also just so happen to be world class musicians. 🤘🏻❤️⚠️

I'm old. Like most of the USA, I was watching The Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan; the world really did change the very next day. I've seen The Doors, I've seen Led Zeppelin, heck I've seen Creedence. I was even standing 10 feet away when then-unknown Linda Ronstadt made her debut on a cheesy afternoon teen dance TV show. I had given up on any modern musicians. TW's fans in the USA tend to skew older than other parts of the world, IMO that is why. Pau's lyrics are deep; Paul Simon and John Lennon deep.

There is one thing seldom brought up about these bands. They appeal to older fans as you mentioned, and, co-incidentally or not, those are the fans with the most disposable income. When I was younger, I couldn't afford the "deluxe" versions of music, but now I find myself getting the CD with the Blue-ray version with a photobook or whatever comes alongside. Whatever though, I along with countless others have a newly revived joy for new music because of these bands, and I didn't see it coming at all. I can’t speak to the age of the Liliac and Band -aid fans. But for The Warning, it’s certainly true that they appeal to and “old rocker” fan base in Canada and the US, although I think their appeal is expanding amongst the younger generations too. Band maid fan here.. but have deep appreciation for the warning. Aside from the factors you mentioned, i think im rooting for them because of where they came from. I have absolutely nothing against US or UK artists but the seemingly "underdog" origins play a small factor here (probably why im not familiar with liliac). Growing up.. it was almost unimaginable for bands from other regions to get worldwide recognition (there were a few exceptions). It's "inspiring" that artists like bandmaid, the warning, the hu, bloodywood, vob and those from "other" european countries like sabaton and nightwish are being heard and loved outside their countries.

Not only did The Warning get me interested in a new artist for the first time in years, but without them I probably never would’ve heard about Halestorm or Muse, among others. I’d also like to note that The Warning’s parents, Luis and Mony, also play a big behind-the-scenes role in the band’s career, giving up their careers to focus on their daughters’ musical ambitions.

While they did not "refuel my passion", The Warning did captivate me because of their abilities and enthusiasm. The fact they all started so young and are still developing their skills. They are also so socially accessible and their Patreon following is almost a family, this closeness is nurtured by the band members themselves, as they will call out those not maintaining the family atmosphere. This same "family atmosphere" carries over to their live shows, it's like going to a club with your friends. As a drummer, I am particularly drawn to Pau. Her energy, musical abilities and song writing just emphasize her talents. I also like the fact they have written so much of their own music. I'd drifted away from rock and metal, and was listening to more folk and classical, until I heard Liliac's cover of "The Last in Line". That led me to reaction videos and, within weeks, Band-Maid. Then I accidently clicked on a video by The Warning, thinking it was the Band-Maid song "Warning!". So they are linked for me personally even though they are musically very different. I think there's a nostalgic sound in each of these bands, which connected with many people who "thought that rock was dead". They each started by proving that they can do classic rock as well as anyone. Of course, Band-Maid's later albums don't sound at all nostalgic. It's actually the innovative and diverse songwriting, even more than the outstanding musicianship, that makes them my favourite band. The members of Liliac and The Warning are much younger, and I'm really looking forward to them evolving into innovators, even though (as with Band-Maid) there will be parts of both fan-bases who won't like it when it happens.

I love The Warning and absolutely adore Band-Maid. (Haven't listened to Liliac, but I'll give them a try after this.) Seeing The Warning grow up from tiny girls who can barely hold their instruments makes you want to root for them - you get to see them develop and progress into excellent musicians and you just can't help but cheer them on and hope they achieve greater and greater success. There's a similar dynamic with Miku from Band-Maid, who didn't even know how to play guitar when she started the band... as you watch over the years you get to see her develop and improve her abilities and you end up cheering her on, too. You feel like they are part of your own family (those darn para-social relationships) and root for them to succeed as you would any of your own friends or family. Of course it helps that they all come across as genuinely nice people. I'm sure if they were jerks, their respective fandoms would be smaller and less enthusiastic.

I'm 71 and had been lost in the past ( Zep, DPurple, all classic rock really ) had no clue Band Maid existed until last year. I do like Warning, no idea of Liliac. But Band Maid is beyond special- reasons: - their catalog has grown fast, they are very prolific. I even love the songs they didn't write themselves early on, because they arranged and played them so well. All the new stuff, however, is so excellent, the compositions are layered, complex, many unusual, ergo the listener has a wide range to listen to. Which brings up point 2..Lot to be said for diversity of style, sound to keep things interesting especially in concert - they all are masters, er, mistresses of their instruments and all shine individually but mesh together as a band like few others. And the solos etc never disrupt, they are always integral to the song, and the solos are subtley supported by the other instruments. - they really seem to enjoy each other, playing live, and they adore their fans like no other. - So, their concerts are way fun cuz they have fun; no rockstar BS, posturing, starting late, showing up drunk or stoned, sloppy live playing ( yeah Jimmy/Zep I'm looking at you ) - They play rock, hard rock, metal, speed metal ( Black HOLe!!!! ), prog, acoustic, jazz, and pop sometimes many forms within one song. - THERE IS NO ONE LIKE THEM , NO ONE and they brought an old white man to life from across the big pond. Thats the main reason right there Enjoy your journey

I love the way you do your analysis, respectful and very eloquently (I'm not very fluent in English, so I guess that helps me get your points better). So thank you for your effort in putting this in our hands. To be honest, I haven't heard much of Band-Maid or Liliac, but I'll certainly give them a deeper look and try. I just love TW and haven't had "time" to look around, the more that I see and hear from them, the more I find other details that make me appreciate them even more. This may be out of context here, and it's not even something I know about well or practice, but it always comes to my mind while I see the connection TW have not only with their fans, but to the people around them in general. So having said that, I believe that these young women possess a higher level of consciousness, like something innately attached to them, than even themselves may not be aware of that. You know?.. Apart from their talent and music, there is something else in the way they are, they act and express themselves, that is very rarely seen, something that is hard to put a word on, but definitely something very brilliant around them doing its magic. As manifested here by some people in their comments and in other places as well, people notice that in their own way but pretty well aligned with most. This is just an idea of mine and how I see and perceive some experiences. For me their music which I completely enjoy a lot all the way around, it is also a vehicle for them to show me at least, how to be a better person myself, and for that alone I do appreciate having them crossed my way just a year ago. Thanks again for your analysis and hope you have a great day! Looking forward for your next one. Tks!

I probably mentioned this on your breakdown of Band-Maid the first time. I found the ladies about three years ago during the plandemic. I also thought rock was dead. Boy was I mistaken. As others have mentioned, they are fresh and familiar at the same time. Kanami's song writing is just next level imho. Miku's lyrics are incredibly deep even if you don't understand Japanese ( I don't) THe Warning is also in this same vein although the song structures are simpler because of being a three piece band, no refection on their talent. The drummer Pau is also an incredible lyricist as well as being an insanely talented drummer. I hope we have many more years for all of these ladies to record and improve. Thank you for sharing this analysis.

Out of the three, my favorite is The Warning. I’ve listened to Liliac and Band Maid; their music just doesn’t grab me the same way TW does. I’m 58 years old and I haven’t been this excited about music in decades. Consider me one of the many protective uncles of The Warning.

Interesting reaction, Nena. I like Band-Maid and Liliac okay, and I respect them, but they don't melt my butter like The Warning does. I think you covered the main reasons why I like them so much: musical proficiency, writing ability, showmanship, and devotion to their fan base. And truth be told, the fact they are gorgeous doesn't hurt one bit. The heart wants what it wants -- simple as that. 😍

Madiac here. Been following for years and love to see them perform live and reach the top of their craft. I just love the 2nd Warning album. But this last album feels flat to me--although their live performances are spectacular. Liliac does some strong covers. But their original music sounds dated and hasn't caught me yet. Great vid. Appreciate your support of upcoming musicians

Hey Martin! I love the album Error but I can't wait for their new music that they are working on now - they blow me away! As for Liliac, I'm expecting their upcoming album to showcase a lot of growth in songwriting. I look forward to hearing it!

I like all 3 of them. Liliac i found because they made a cover of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" they are really talented, and the singer is blowing me away every time. Their music don't quite fall in my personal taste, but its rock solid nontheless. Now Band-Maid? I discovered BM because of Herman Li from DragonfForce "auditioning" for them. They had been shown as suggestion in my feed for quite a while, but the maid outfit steered me away from ever clicking. Which i have regrettet many times since. It was just a "WTF just happend to my senses??" moment. So much going on. I'm convinced they aim to kill people by overstimulating our senses. The amount of talent in that band is unrivaled in the world today. And just like you it got me to discover the j-rock/metal scene, which is simply just amazing. They are a true liveband. They FEED of the crowd. Watch some of their live videos with crowd, and watch the ones without due to covid lockdowns. Thats 2 completely different bands. The Warning i discovered because of BM. Of the 3? They are the ones i never get tired of listening to. Its just plain good solid rock. And their lyrics are top notch. Been many years since something that pure and "simple" has been around.

I think focusing so much on covers has been a blessing in terms of exposure, but has made it difficult for them to show the world who they uniquely are, and what they can create on their own. I predict new album will really help them to establish themselves, and I think they will focus less and less on covers in the future. ;) I am curious to hear what it will sound like! I agree they have a TON of potential!

I said that regarding covers safe to say it didn't go well. They have all done covers at some point so I've no issue there but the warning especially were doing own stuff already. I do think liliac should where the warning are right now but could b 18 months 2 years behind right now

Yes, I’m sure they were torn. It’s hard to walk away from something that has served you well, but it’s also important to grow as artists and find your own sound. In the end, this is what people will remember most. They will get there! Excited to hear the new album! But I really do understand why they have focused so heavily on covers - people ( including myself) love them!

I can only speak from my own life time of rock starting in the 1960s, I've experienced the absolute best if the best, then came the dark time's where there was a musical desert where rock and metal were almost dead, then I discovered Band-Maid in 2016, I was so excited by what I heard, after 20 year's in the desert there was an oasis, because of Band-Maid I have discovered so many band's the Warning included that I will never thirst for rock/metal for the rest of my existence, Band-Maid is now and will remain my favorite all time favorite band for more reasons I care to list and I will continue to support all of these band's.

Excellent video!. I discovered BAND-MAID right before the pandemic and they really made dealing with that whole debacle a whole lot easier. Their fun personalities, and impressive catalog of music really reignited my love of rock music. The crazy thing is that they show no signs of slowing down as this may be their busiest year to date. The Warning are fairly new to me, but they write solid rock songs and I think they will only get better. Liliac are a talented group, but they really don't appeal to me all that much.

Great analysis! I am a huge fan of The Warning and have never heard of these other bands, except that The Warning just announced they are going to Japan this summer and playing with Band Maid. *Now I'll have to check them out, along with Liliac.* What drew me into The Warning rabbit hole was their unbelievable lyrical sensibilities, combined with their musicianship at such an early age. I bought all their CDs, ripped them to my Mac and iPhone, and put them on repeat in the car. I've watched every concert video on their channel (As an audio geek and a respecter of copy rights, I avoid most fan videos from smartphones.) Of course, they're easier on the eyes than bands like the present day Rolling Stones, too, so that doesn't hurt! But most of the time, they don't rely on looks for views. They don't have to. Their skills are off the charts! I grew up with The Beatles, Stones, Dylan, CSN and sometimes Y, Byrds, Joni Mitchell, all the Woodstock bands, all the Laurel Canyon bands, all the British Invasion bands, Rod Stewart and Faces, Jethro Tull, Chuck Berry, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Aerosmith and Boston, Van Halen, David Bowie, Elton John, Blondie and Pat Benatar, the prog rock crowd of Yes, King Crimson, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Nectar, Rush, etc. I also listen to jazz and classical, blues and bluegrass, folk and trance. *The Warning are right at home in that mix.* They belong on the same plane as any of the greats I've heard.

As far as favorites, number one, for me, is Band-Maid. Second would be The Warning. Third would be Liliac. I like Band-Maid most cause of the complexity and technical aspects of their songs! The Warning has a bit more basic rock sound, but their lyrics are always very deep and meaningful. Liliac has gotten a little heavy in their originals for my taste, but love their covers are fantastic. My two cents worth.

I love Band Maid because they put the work in. One year they performed 104 shows. They brought back my love for rock. They always look like their having fun. Their stage presence and interactions on stage. Their intricate song composition . They let every member shine. The unbelievable musical talent of each member and how they blend those talents together. And finally … the love the show their fans. The only band I know of who write love songs to their fans. At least two I know of, Memorable and About Us.

I really liked your analysis. I think the fandoms of these bands are so passionate about them it's not only because they play the music they like and for being so likeable as a whole (personalities, connection with the fans, etc), I think there's a strong believe that these bands are "saving" rock, so fans are so enthusiast to share and talk about them to many people as possible, I think that's why we want them to succeed. I'm personally a huge fan of BAND-MAID, when I knew about them, they were just what I was looking for and they just clicked on me like no other band in recent years, although I'm always searching and supporting new bands. They strongly reminded me to one of my all time favorite bands, SIAM SHADE. I'm really happy for their success, seeing them grow and getting bigger and bigger every time it's so awesome. I've listening to japanese rock bands since 1998 and although I always have thought that there's have been a lot of great bands in Japan, people in the west just ignored them and they simply weren't part of the conversation about the direction of rock history. But, in these days, things are really changing and I'm really happy that BAND-MAID is leaving a mark on that without sacrificing their nature, people like them just the way they are. Hope that these bands become bigger in the future, we need them to headline festivals and being part in the podium of rock history.

I know all three bands and in my case The Warning are number one, Liliac is 1 b and Band Maid 1c. They are extremely talented, but actually play different kind of music. While TW makes me feel happy and invigorated, I feel power and a little melancholy when I hear Liliac. Band Maid are talented and deliver good rock of high quality and are fun to look at because they are so energetic. You can´t compare them when it comes to the style in rock that they represent. There is one word to describe this documentary *Passion* the passion fans has for their favorite band weather it is *BAND-MAID, LILIAC or THE WARNING* as 56 years old the very first album I purchased was AC/DC Back in Black and made me a big AC/DC fan which I saw one time live also had the fortune to see DIO, Van Halen, Metallica, Queensrÿche, Rush, Judas Priest, BTO, Guns 'n' Roses, Joan Jet, The Kinks, Pat Benatar and many other live. In 2019 I discovered *BAND-MAID* and was blown away by them so much so I ended up watching them live 4 time in 2022 and in May will see them an additional 3 times. It great to read all the comments and how each fanbase is passionate about their bands because something like this rarely happens once in a lifetime and to grasp the moment while these artists are in their prime.
