I believe Warren Deck had a sound that has remained unduplicated.
In my opinion, exposure to recordings like this profoundly help young and old players develop their sound concepts.
His playing inspired me to pursue Orchestral tuba playing on this very platform about a decade ago.
-Look for recordings of the New York Phil with following conductors:
Zubin Mehta (1979-2001)
Kurt Masur (1979-2001)

All NY phil recordings when Warren Deck was playing with them are top tier for tuba sound concepts. Mahler 2 especially!

@@disamis6873 On Spotify Or youtube they are recordings by leonard Bernstein. White cover with a yellow and blue picture in the middle. This specific Mahler 2 Brass chorale has inspired several professional musicians I've met. Let me know if you want any more info!

My teacher studied under this guy, his sound cant be replicated. You have players that have massive sounds like Tim Buzbee, Gene Pokorny, Oystein Baadsvik, etc. but no one has come close to the behemoth of a sound that Warren Deck possessed. Incredible player

@@hagan9769 So maybe Warren Deck was playing too open with too much pressure? I knew he got focal dystonia but never knew what caused it (or what couldve caused it) If you know at all, what do you personally think caused his focal dystonia?

@@hagan9769 Oh god, I would never do that to the tuba! But I’ll have to look for any tension in my tuba playing 👍

@@hagan9769 I studied with Don Harry, who had probably the most relaxed embrasure around. He played many concerts with Warren throughout his career. I took a lesson with Warren and almost studied under him too. Don's approach to the tuba was to create the sound with as little effort as possible, and he played professionally 45 years never losing his incredible sound. He thought Jacobs had dystonia too if it matters for anything.

@@disamis6873 the cause was too much pressure. i currently am developing the same effects in my muscles in my upper lip as he did, and i'm trying to get rid of the bad habits i've built up over the years of my playing.
