Nice video - Egill was a true skald and warrior! I love the fact that he composed the original version of the "My Mother Told Me" song you hear on Vikings, over 1000 years later his work is being enjoyed. There is an Old Norse/Icelandic group here in Texas called Nordanfolk, I recently saw their performance of his original version it was so cool.

Hope you enjoyed Ronnie! After reading his saga, he’s without a doubt the most interesting Viking I’ve ever read up on. Always refreshing to read of a non royal Viking who had an epic life !

A VERY productive, poetic, bloodthirsty, talented, intelligent, Bi-Polar, furrowed brow Berserker, I’d say 🤣😆

Your story of Thorolf is wrong. Two brothers who were jealous of Thorolf controlling land they believed was theirs by right, lied to King Harold saying he was a threat to his rule just so they could obtain his land and wealth. Kveldulf warned his son not to be a vassal to King Harold because he believed nothing good could come of it. Kveldulf refused to join King Harold earlier to subjugate Norway because he distrusted him but Harold dare not challenge the son of Ulf the Fearless a clan of huge shape shifting men. It was said in the saga that Thorolf was the greatest of of men amongst his kin and his is death was greatly mourned amongst their people. Kveldulf and Skalagrim heard word that King Harold's men accusers were sailing around in Thorolf's majestic boat. When they found them Kveldulf worked himself up into his last fury and slew 50 men with his great battle-axe and died shortly after. His kin pushed his coffin into the sea and said where ever it landed they would call home. It landed on the shores of Iceland.

It’s not wrong I just condensed it
@christianc.26647 сағат бұрын
@historyprofiles I understand you condensed the story but your reasoning for why Harold killing Thorolf was wrong. It had nothing to do with defiance on Thorolf. Thorolf was extremely loyal to the crown and tried to please King Harold even to the point he gifted him his longship. The two brothers who were jealous of Thorolf lied to Harold and said he was disloyal and the king bought it. That's a huge difference.
@historyprofiles6 сағат бұрын
@@christianc.2664if you re listen to the family backstory part I never said thorolf was defiant simply his power was growing and Harald saw him as a threat and then killed him, you obviously know the whole saga but yea thank you for watching! I hope I did egill justice

Whats crazy to imagine, is that these "epic" battles in the far north were probably like 50 men against 40 ... or maybe even less. That escape tho... now that is epic! Especially making it out with some loot! I would love to see the look on the faces of the captors when they arrived in tue morning to find their viking captives had escaped! 😂 I feel sad about Egil losing his brother tho... living a very long life is hard without your best friend. My best friend passed suddenly 5 years ago and life has just never been the same. It hurts so bad every day still. He was 34.
@historyprofiles5 сағат бұрын
Yeah! The raids would have been small raiding parties! Egils party had grown to 300 when he joined aethelstan so yes! Although 50 men with shield ups shouting! What a sight still! Yes it was sad how his brother died at the epic battle, and rip to your friend! Due to his brothers death aethelstan gave him 2 chests of silver which still may be buried in Iceland today at his farm in borg! Hope you enjoyed the video!
