This documentary covers the two wars that forged Meiji Era Japan, the Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion.
➡️ The Boshin War was a Japanese civil war fought between the Tokugawa Shogunate and Anti-Tokugawa Shogunate sonnō jōi backing Domains during the Bakumatsu period of the Meiji Restoration. Samurai warriors clashed against another in battles such as the battle of Battle of Toba-Fushimi and the Battle of Hakodate. The elite Shinsengumi Samurai and French trained Denshūtai would fight for Tokugawa Yoshinobu against the Samurai of the Satchō Alliance of Satsuma, Chōshū and Tosa.
➡️ During the Boshin War the Ezo Republic would be founded and fall. The French officer Jules Brunet (inspiration for the Last Samurai) would help train and fight for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Emperor Meiji would take the throne and famous leaders such as Saigo Takamori, Ōmura Masujirō and Yamagata Aritomo would rise to take the reigns of a new Meiji Era and the end of the Samurai. The result of the Boshin War would lead to the Satsuma Rebellion under Saigo Takamori.
➡️The Satsuma Rebellion (西南戦争) led by the last Samurai Saigō Takamori occurred largely because of the disenfranchisement of the former Samurai class, a disagreement on the reforms of the new Meiji government and a sense of loss of Japanese traditions. The Meiji Restoration laid out many reforms and not all were agreed upon by Samurai such as Saigō Takamori one of the three great nobles. The rapid modernization of Japan led the the disaffection of the Samurai, many falling into poverty, unemployment and loss of purpose. Saigō Takamori was a hero of the Boshin War and a great leader of the Meiji Restoration.
➡️The Satsuma Rebellion (西南戦争) saw many battles such as: The Siege of Kumamoto Castle The battle of Tabaruzaka and the most famous, the Battle of Shiroyama. Saigō Takamori and 500 Samurai made their last stand at Shiroyama and all died. The true last Samurai Saigō Takamori gave his life for a cause: to protect the traditions of the Japanese people.

Still love the fact that Tokugawa Yoshinobu, who got overthrown in the Boshin war, managed to outlive all of the Meiji triumvirate, Sakamoto Ryoma and even emperor Meiji himself.

Good stuff! Like the channel. Info is awesome especially and level of depth, however you might want to run some words through a pronunciation check - especially the central terms of the era. As you progress you might want to memorize try and memorize the script and change the background notes to cues rather than reading lines as it might help your pronunciation as well - but it would be more work definitely. Only one I feel like I need to point out for you is Meiji is pronounced like may-gee. I also have pronunciation issues so sorry if this all seems harsh lol

Id definitely agree, it broke my immersion quite a bit, mostly noun pronunciations. To give credit it was here and there. Some examples : Sino is Sai-no vs see-no. AF Bauduin is bode-wan (flat a) not bodon

Saigo Takamori is truly a tragic figure. A war hero who won the throne for the emperor, just so that the very same regime to toss him aside and kill him.

Hi, how are you? I have a suggestion: can you do a documentary based on the boxer rebellion 1899-1902? The reason is because if the nations back then understand their brotherhood amongst each other and be cooperative to decrease tensions, the Great War (World War I), World War II, and even the Cold War would never happen. Of course, that doesn’t happen, but it is something to contemplate about.

I have an episode on the Boxer Rebellion on this channel, but its quite limited in scope. For Kings and Generals podcast "the fall and rise of China" I covered it in depth over quite a few episodes.

@@ThePacificWarChannel Ok, nice 👍🏼. Oh, by the way, since you’re part of the kings and generals team, would you seriously consider doing the Great War (world war 1) series for the kings and generals channel? Because July 28 of this year would be 110 years since the war began. While, yes, there’s the Great War channel coverage with Indy Neidel, but that was 10 years ago. It’s still good, but needs to be updated and refreshed since things changed a lot today. There’s also Jesse Alexander’s 30 minute documentaries as well, but I would like some variety for WW1 coverage just to keep things familiar while providing something new. That’s why I want Kings and Generals to do this series in whatever format you as a team decided. What do you think?

@@josephsarra4320 Hmmm, its interesting you mention this. I do two podcasts for them, the Pacific war week by week, and the fall and rise of China. The Chinese podcast will last until I reach 1949 (I am currently in the late 1920s). Could very well do a podcast on WW1 after. Would be a collosal one haha. I am a huge fan of Dan Carlin's series on WW1.
