According to actual texts, most of what we know of Shinobi (ninjas) is false. They are not black pajamas wearing special forces. They were just samurai, learning samurai arts plus infiltration, deceptive strategies and espionage. Most ninjas would infiltrate the enemy, as perhaps a servant, Gardner, nobility etc and would get the enemy to turn against themselves. Occasionally assassinating selected individuals.

It is a damn shame because it’s our differences in culture that defines us and marks us out so we may come to recognise each other. For example I am Scottish by blood and clan (I became Muslim nearly 25 yrs ago) on both sides of my parents and the kilt and Tartan literally define us. It saddens me to see a lot of that Japanese culture decay but at least the martial arts and Calligraphy and Japanese architecture and Archery and traditional medicine has survived as separate disciplines. This person is clearly not familiar with a universal fact about historical warriors: There is more than one type of warfare. I for one side with the camp who believes that ninjas and samurai are the same type of warrior doing two different types of warfare, but in a society where everyone is ashamed to admit that they are doing black ops. So ashamed that they erased any evidence that would have allowed us to connect the ninja with the samurai. It is a good theory, especially when one considers how hard it is for a samurai to take another noble's head in the middle of a battle without having his friends pin him to the ground for him. Then there are the similarities in weapons used by samurai and weapons that are often associated with ninjas and the similarities between the way a ninja trains and a samurai trains. It has everything to do with how shameful they thought black ops was even though they clearly did a lot of it.

It's disappointing that a documentary with this level of resources getting such fundamental things about shinobi wrong. "Samurai honor prevented samurai from taking part in asymmetrical warfare." Many ninjas WERE samurai! "Samurai" is a social class, whereas "shinobi" is a profession. Those two things are not at all mutually exclusive. Case in point, Hattori Hanzo was from the samurai class. It's also frustrating depicting them as being clad in the stereotypical black uniforms. While it's not impossible that something similar might be worn for very specific operations, the concept of ninjas dressed like that were popularized by japanese theater productions. The all black uniforms and black masks were the typical uniform of stage hands handling props and set pieces during shows. The all black was a signifier to the audience that the person they were seeing holding branches or moving things around weren't characters, and that they should be ignored. Well, one play had the idea of suddenly having people who were dressed as stage hands suddenly start interacting with the actors, revealing that they had been ninjas lying in wait. It was similar to the way characters now will "break the fourth wall" and suddenly start talking to the audience. The show and that stunt became immensely popular, and over time that depiction of ninjas overshadowed more realistic and historically accurate depictions of shinobi warriors.

So, basically, what y'all saying is: they were basically ordinary people with a bit of training, waiting to be told where to go, and any equipment they needed had to be sourced from locals (swiped) or brought in by other agents? People take the invisible thing to literally, it simply meant unnoticed, or unremarkable to those searching. Obviously the higher value the target, the more experienced the operative would have to be, often placed months ahead of any assassination attempt to breed familiarity with locals?

Antony Cummins! Spectacular to see the fine man here! For those who might not know, he has a number of books written and a fine KZbin channel of his own. I highly recommend

The origin of ninja goes back 800 years to China when the rural peasantry had to resist the tyrannical dynasties.

A modern day 'Ninja' is a computer hacker who can spy on you and f*ck you up via that.

So this is actually an historical fantasy documentary then? LOL, I think the very nice opening animations made that clear... ;-)

I don’t know what’s more ridiculous - this pantomime or the fact that I watched every minute of it

It's a very good documentary in terms of information. The visual side is they're very clearly not actors but extras and re-enactors which is yes admittedly a bit cringe in parts.

question, what source do you have that Hattori Hanzō was even in the Tenshō Iga War? Specially that the Hattori Hanzo was not a real Shinobi, but a samurai Vassel under Tokugawa Ieyasu. Why would he jeopardize his status, wealth, and title by going to war with his bosses' allies. Seems like this show only cares about oversimplification of dramatic ninja fighting techniques and very vague, false, and outdated historical accounts on who did what. This show is a mess.

With all due respect... Ninja are related to the Shingon Buddhist sect, the hand mudra come from that tradition, not Shinto.
