I can personally tell you as a scientist and sociologist among other things that it absolutely is not fringe. The problem is overwhelmingly the left and not the right. I'm not only a scientist and sociologist. I'm also a loner. I have a form of mild autism though the social implications are quite substantial considering. I don't make friends and I am always an outsider. It's immediately obvious to me that there is a huge asymmetry. I disagree with a number of things which might happen to align with left or right. When I am not in alignment with the left the different is like night and day. It's an extreme difference in which you will always encounter people who will take it upon themselves to punish you for not being one of them. I do not experience this with the right. No one tries to get me kicked out, start a fight with me or anything like that on the right. It really is fringe behaviour on the right to truly be nasty to people. I experience it around one in a thousand times compared to the left. It's not just ideological. It's behavioural. The left are systematically punitive. They take it upon themselves to punish anyone who differs from them. This behaviour then reinforces extreme ideology which cannot be challenged as a result. To explain the problem to someone on the left who doesn't think they are part of an extreme group there is a simple sociological experiment. Ask them to wear a MAGA hat for a week and then a Kamala Harris hat for a week. The difference is so obvious that you do not need a complicated dataset or to do a complicated scientific experiment. You need do as little as to wear an innocuous political hat representing half the voters in the USA. You will see that it is not fringe. You don't need to scour the planet for the few in a million who are the most unstable.
@jenbhikesАй бұрын
Awesome comment, thank you. Going to ask people to do this experiment!
@FirstLast-rb5zjАй бұрын
@@jenbhikes The fun thing is that I have done this experiment myself in Europe. Just a couple of days and the way people react really reveals it all. You never see anything like it on the other side. It's a shame I did not take footage. I am a particularly large man and I have no doubt some of these people would have been violent were this not the case. A gang of Asian youths started making racial slurs at me and they backed down when I confronted them on it. Another guy I think from Jamaica hurled threatening racial insults against me then disappeared into the crowd. A German in the queue for the train demanded that I take it off and almost started a fight with me though he backed down. When out side the station smoking an East European marched furiously toward me telling me to get out of his country telling me he didn't want my kind in this country. When I started speaking and he heard my native accent he turned red, about turned and speed marched directly the way he came. Yes, a foreigner told me to get out of "his" country. A guy of African heritage accosted me though he calmed down enough for a conversation and he reviewed himself to believe a bunch of extremist left wing propaganda including some bizarre belief that MAGA meant bringing back Jim Crow and his belief that we should give our jobs to everyone in the world. On the train in Europe I was hung over with my hat on sitting in the seat. A black woman then got on looking for her seat and it turns out she was seated next to me. She started flipping out screaming "I'm not sitting next to that man." causing a huge scene demanding the staff reseat her on a mostly empty carriage. I cracked up laughing because it turns out I was so hung over I had gotten the wrong seat. Her boyfriend was visibly really embarrassed by the whole thing. She went completely nuts. This is just in Europe and it's really one of many examples of how things differ. There are many ways. I can argue online with creationists until the cows come home as to why they are wrong on evolution as a not just as a scientist but a technologist and engineer who has worked with evolutionary technology. I never had to fear any kind of reprisal or punishment. No one is going to ban me, I'm not going to get the police around my house, no one is going to call up my work. If I want to receive some kind of personal injury from creationists I really would have to go out of my way which I do not do, for example, it might cause a problem if I specifically go onto their personal and specialised forum. On the other hand if I talk about evolution in relation to humans and anything comes up that's politically incorrect in relation to left wing politics then that is a real problem. Although it's a very small chance it's a growing chance that I could potentially even end up in prison if I'm not careful simply for stating absolute truth that is scientifically sound. It simply doesn't happen the other way around. It has already reached the point that I cannot openly discuss certain scientific topics without becoming unemployable and suffering funnily enough the same kind of discrimination they talk about certain races having once suffered. Asking people to simply try wearing the hat is asking them to walk in your shoes. Even if they refuse that's useful as they tend to know why, just asking them why not and seeing the disproportionate aversion is another branch of the experiment, because of how people will react. Some are truly naive though and will try it. They will then be shocked by the way they are regularly treated.
@jenbhikesАй бұрын
@@FirstLast-rb5zj Yikes! It would be relatively safe for me to do this experiment where I live, but probably not in a big city! That's brave -- I guess being big helps 😅 -- and thank you for telling me about your results! I was in the academic world professionally and definitely decided to quit instead of keeping my mouth shut all the time.
@FirstLast-rb5zjАй бұрын
@@jenbhikes I don't work in the academic world. That is not much of a scientific industry, it is a publishing industry. There's very little opportunity and it is a hostile environment. Most people are better off working in the commercial sector and for themselves. There's nothing particularly special about academia barring a tiny few niches where it does particularly well and standards are still at least half way maintained. Academia is anti-intellectual and rife with corruption. I got a STEM related degree and that was a complete joke. I taught myself programming as a kid and barely anyone else on the course after years came out able to program at all. The entire course could be compacted into a handbook and about a month of study plus exams. It's just one scam after another. This is one of the reasons experiments like this are quite compelling. You can convince people on the left to try it as they themselves can take part in a scientific experiment. No one needs an academic credential to do science, especially social science. The mentality that a magic scroll is needed is nonsense. It's quite easy to do an experiment with lots of people around to see how they respond to a stimuli such as a MAGA hat. When asymmetries are so enormous you don't even need to bother calculating statistical significance. Basic personal empirical observation (heck just real world experience) and accounting is sufficient. The best scientists also do not mind on many occasions being a Guinea Pig in their own experiment. There is another piece of advice that I will give and that should always be relayed. If you ever run your own business or are hiring people you don't have to in most cases recognise university as accredited just because someone else does. Generally speaking all certificates in the humanities should be ignored. This is even the case in software engineering. In that field we barely take note of qualifications. Instead someone it brought in for an hour long interview in which they are asked to take a test where they actually have to program something to see if they can actually do the work. This is how useless academia is today. Just look at portfolios of prior work or ask to demonstrate an actual working capacity. Takes an hour in most cases and is thousands of times cheaper than going to university to get an unreliable measurement of potential performance.

No more Emperor Palpatine, full-tilt Anakin rolling around screaming in the pitch.

I'm Canadian but I subscribed to the Wa. Po. thinking that I would get some unbiased views in the US (there were non.) I started reading the comments instead of the reporting. The comments section was so rigid and Democratic in every area when I wasn't posting different views I found the comments so amusing I had a few good laughs. That is all I got from the Wa.Po.
